60 Minutes (1968)
Merely THE BEST
Not only is this show the top shelf standard by which all other news shows measure themselves it is, and has been for 40 years, IMHO, the single best show on television. 60 minutes has been directly responsible for breaking some of the most important stories of the last 40 years. With little exception, the stories and the reporting of them have been absolutely first rate. Over the years I have watched incredibly informative and interesting episodes with the Ayatollah Khomeini, Bill Clinton, John Kerry, Johnny Carson, Michael Jordan, and a multitude of really despicable con men and businesspeople. Anyone who is unfamiliar with the story of 60 minutes and Big Tobacco should research it and then see the movie The Insider. KUDOS all around for this show, I wish there a lot more like it telling the real story of so many other things that are going on!! And Andy Rooney is the best two minutes of TV you will ever see anywhere.

As good as movie-making gets
I am a movie fanatic with over 1000 titles in my private collection. I spend a lot of time on IMDb reading movie reviews to decide about what to order. This movie would rank in my top 5 favorites and the only one so far that I have taken time out to review like this. The story is so unique, incredibly well drawn, directed and acted and you have absolutely no way of guessing at what will happen next (this is one of my top criteria for great movies - that of being non-formulaic and unpredictable). The story begins at an auction house where a masterpiece antique violin is being auctioned off. The viewer is then taken back through the life story of the violin and the lives that it touched over 200 years. I have seen this movie several times and I never fail to marvel at my re-enjoyment of watching it. Great story, great acting, great music, unpredictable and unique. It doesn't get any better!! It amazes me that while this movie gets high marks and outstanding reviews that it isn't rated even higher.
Ba wang bie ji (1993)
Outstanding Movie-making
I am a huge movie buff and for my money this film gets top marks in every category I use to rate movies. I hate seeing a movie that leaves me with the feeling that I have seen it many times before in formulaic fashion. No worries here - This movie is COMPLETELY unique, unbelievably well made, has topnotch performances throughout and tells a compelling story. The opening and early scenes immediately arrest your attention and draw you in, you are never quite sure where it will go. In the end as the story becomes completely revealed I was left feeling a myriad of emotions with that certain sigh of contentment one experiences whenever encountering anything of outstanding quality! Movie making at it's finest!!!
The Insider (1999)
Everyone should see this movie
What a terrific movie. Once in a great while, I will see a movie that is not only outstanding in every measurable category but also has a socially redeeming value of some sort that bumps it a notch above even the best movies. This one meets that standard. It's a true story about Corporate malfeasance and media manipulation by powerful interests. It demonstrates clearly why we must insure the ability of the media and press to report without interference. Pacino and Crowe are outstanding in their performances and the plot is at once riveting, educational and alarming. This movie ought to be required viewing in mandatory High school classes on ethics and/or government.
