Damsel (2024)
It was a fun romp
Ok so many reviews say predictable, and yes it was but watch enough fantasy and they all are. That being said I did enjoy it. It moved at a good pace and was a well told story. No real surprises but not many movies surprise any more or even entertain for that matter. It honestly provided me with all I wanted, I wasn't bored, sets were well done, I thought the CGI was well done, story was well told, strong female character but not aggressive or how Hollywood tries to portray strong female characters these days. She was, strong, capable, loved her family, feminine, did her best, no foul language, never really talked down to anyone. I thought a great well rounded character.
I would have loved to see her get home "I'm back! I am a widow now but hey I made this great new friend!"
Don't Worry Darling (2022)
I should have listened to that voice that said don't watch it, find something else.
Ok so the title says it all. It was so boring. At first it felt like a stepford wives redone, then get out redone. I should just stop watching movies as what I am looking for is apparently not out there. Other comments were about how well directed, the actors were great yadda yadda yadda. I don't watch a movie to admire the artistry or how well the actors are. I want to watch a story brought to life. I want to become immersed in it. If the directing and acting and story are good then that happens. This movie just made me go wash the supper dishes, very slowly.
I am glad there were some people who liked it, assuming they were real reviews, but for me it was so boring and a waste of time.
Sight Unseen (2024)
This was totally irresponsible
Ok so the commercials really bothered me when I saw them but I held out to watch at least the first episode.
There is so much wrong with this that I cannot even suspend my disbelief.
The main character is blind. Period. As someone who wears thick glasses and knows if I take them off I am almost helpless, this is not a good show to air in this time of overly influenced people. I can also guarantee that she would not move the way she does if she was blind and relying on someone's direction. This app would have been decent for me but I am a data scientist not a detective. A detective needs to know and interpret things on another level. It's convenient that all interactions are recorded but can you say lawsuit? And "work a grid left to write ..." does not make the operator observant enough for this. And as a detective is this person covered for privacy? Oh yeah she signed wavers for the app but the police need to know and more relevant the lawyers need to sign off on it. Law suit, law suit law suit.
It is a great idea for an "eye in the sky" partner, but partner, not a seeing eye app.
Overall this concept is a bad idea. There will be people who see this and think yeah I can fake not being blind. Big question is, would you want a Dr operating on you if they were blind? Only thing they have is some min wage worker directing them? A cop investigating your murder, how well would that really go?
Sure it's feel good and yeah I can do anything cheer up material but reality matters.
Haunting of the Queen Mary (2023)
I had to google wth this movie was about.
Ok so a lot of the reviews that give this movie higher than I did but the reasoning is "oh it was pretty", "the lighting used created a great atmosphere", "the views of the ships were awe inspiring" ..... ok well nice to hear but frankly I don't care. I want to see any of that I go to museums or watch documentaries, I don't want to watch a horror film and think "oh wow that costume of the guy who was just killed was wonderfully made". If something done in the movie is a wow moment for me about anything artistic, it has to be really awe inspiring and this movie did not have that.
So the premise of the movie was a connection between a family in 1939 and a family today. They kept going back and forth with odd transitions and didn't make sense. It's like they had a bunch of cards with plot points on them and tried to arrange them in some order to make suspense and intrigue. It got to the point they jumped around so much I just gave up trying to follow and would just talk with those with me making fun of the movie or checking what's up now maybe it's worth watching now - nope.
I am not going to give in-depth scene by scene break downs as I have already lost too much time to this movie.
In summery if you are looking to waste time and won't regret the waste of time watch it, form your own opinion, but have a book ready or your phone.
Children Ruin Everything (2022)
I don't get how this is still on TV
Ok I usually wouldn't bother reviewing but CTV is now airing this show in the early evenings so now I need to try to find something else to watch at that time and choices are limited. Netflix it will probably be - I can watch some Korean TV comedy.
I don't understand how this show is still on - oh wait the required Canadian content reg. Not a lot of choices so here we are.
I just find the show irritating. It's nothing new, a lot of the jokes are tired it's like watching your parents try to be funny when your friends are over. The acting is actually pretty good, and the actors the only reason I gave it a try, but the material is not worth my time. Plus side, it's not another cop, crime or hospital show. Yay.
Oh well that is my griping.
The Mother (2023)
So boring!
Ok so I thought it might be ok. Nothing great but enough entertainment to be an ok time waste. Well it whips through the action in the beginning, then has this whole introspective mother daughter bonding crap that dragged on and on and on. It should have been at most 1 1/2 hrs.
If she is so bad a$$ how hid she forget the second guy until he t-boned the truck.
And sorry but the girls is a bad actor, or maybe she did as good as she could with crappy dialogue and directing.
I guess if I had this running while I did chores it might not have been as irritating. But alas I sat here actually watching it. So so so boring.
007: Road to a Million (2023)
Know what to expect
Honestly, I liked the show. Some reviewers said the amazing race is better but they are not trying to be TAR. There is no actual race, just people going on bond type "missions" around the world. I like that the teams are not competing, each team has different challenges and questions (the questions are fun to play along with) and no one is infighting or sabotaging others. It's not overly exciting but it is not overly dramatized either. I find it great to have on with other and we can talk about things, challenge each other on the questions, not a lot of host catering going on, nice quick pace, and no times when they spend way too long talking to the contestants about this that and the other thing. One team did call home but hey that was bathroom break time. Ok they are now doing this crap. Sorry, as bad as it makes me out to be, I don't care about their life challenges. Don't care. This is not speed dating. They get kicked off now i might miss them for a few minutes. So there is good times to read or do other things during the show.
Overall, it was not time I'll mourn, like I have with other shows or movies, so time .. OK wasted. More questions and less character introspection is my only thought for improvement.
Zombieverse (2023)
It was a silly romp.
It was silly and funny to watch. I actually came here to read reviews because I was really not sure about it. They way the promoted it, that the contestants didn't know made me scoff, because if they were going to fake it and really scare people like some elaborate prank, some of those zombie actors would be dead. Seriously, I have watched enough zombie shows that I would weapon up because I'd need to. And then there were rules?
One comment said they thought of it as a murder mystery, everyone got their rolls and then went for it. That actually put it in perspective for me and I was able to laugh and just enjoy the sillyness.
The Traitors (2023)
Miss opportunity for dramatics
Ok so the show wasn't spectacular but it wasn't horrible either. I wanted to waste time, we'll time is wasted but I also don't morn it's loss. It was fun to watch - keep in mind I did other stuff during it including reading; yes a real book.
The main thing I was hoping for that I feel was an opportunity missed, was that there was touting it as a murder mystery, the host was so dramatic and theatrical and they were in a castle! The murders could have been played up! Every one is woken the next morning to a maid screaming, they all go to the room and there is a dead body! They could be at breakfast and someone dies of poison. Everyone looks out the window and they watch as someone is murdered! And contests could be built around them like find the murder weapon, find the killers, etc. It would have added a but of fun to the theatrics and made it different from run of the mill reality show. Which it was, just called things murder and such. Famous death scenes could have been reenacted.
The location was also a reception hall for things like weddings, use that! Make a deal with someone to have their wedding there for free on a specific day and the contestants interact with guests or maybe act as wait staff.
SO MANY opportunities were missed. And it could be spun in a way to not make it creepy or possibly dangerous like buried alive. And OMG the round table took so long! I guess the point of it all was to let people watch others argue a lot.
I hope some one does read this and it gets added to make the show more fun and interesting - just acknowledge the anonymous review.
Dance 100 (2023)
Same old same old
Ok so choreographers and worlds best dancers? Who decided that because these were all very amateurish. Now granted there is no way I could do what they do but then I am not trying too and there are better out there. I explained to someone that these are choreographers and worlds best dancers in the same way someone went out bought a keyboard, software, watched some videos, and critiqued some songs and now call themselves producers. I wonder if I went bought an easel, painting supplies, painted a line could I then call myself an artist?
The premise of the show was, cookie cutter and I was hoping it would have a new spin to it. It didn't. Don't get me wrong, it was actually ok to have running while I did my house cleaning but that was it. At the end I have no clue who anyone is, it was not that engaging.
I'm sure if more effort was put into it, it might have been more interesting to watch, but as it is it is not good.
Maybe try something different next time.
Race Against the Tide (2021)
Nice and simple an easy watch
I am not looking to be preached at or learn something complex - that is what books are for.
This makes a great show to have on while making small talk, reading, playing silly iPad games or just to veg out to. Beautiful scenery, funny contestants, simple explanations. If you have ever built a sand castle you get the general idea for most of it and can have an appreciation for the work and artistry involved. It does't explain all the nuances as if I will some day try this (HA!) myself. But then I don't want an instructional video.
I really like the host. Some hosts talk and I want to tell them to .... Well shut up. He talks the right amount, is well spoken, and to the point. He doest the obligatory talk to the contestants but not in such a way as he seems to interrupt them or have "what do I say now" moments. Some of the other hosts could learn something from him (cough glass blowing cough).
Overall, I enjoyed this and do not regret lost time due to watching this. Though having them literally race the tide would be great, as in tide is in and sculpture is gone - yeah I am mean. Tide has run off with many a sand castle, it's part of it all.
Snowflake Mountain (2022)
So bad it's funny
There will be spoilers but it doesn't really matter because it is so bad.
So before you watch this you need to be in the right mind set, so for most people that means drunk. Or with other people you can make fun of it with. If you are looking for serious or well scripted or educational this is not it. I originally expected more but once I realized what it was I was able to change perspective and we started looking for all the obviously fake things, the overly bad scripts and any thing else to mock. And we had fun doing that, more so than some movies I will forever regret watching and never get the time back. But again you need the right mind set.
First off you could tell the good actors from bad - we then set a game of who got better at acting. As they "developed" the sappy lines were right out of self help propaganda. When they blew up the bags, omg first off there was no destruction of anything given there was an explosion. You could watch the bags and nothing happened to them as the fire "raged". They should have melted, though I guess if the survived an explosion fire is nothing! And where did all the cloths come from if the bags were destroyed?
Our next game was to see if they missed editing out thing like people who should not be in the show - like campers, hikers, the sheep herder, the owner of the land.
Their "camp" was in an obviously man made patch of "woods".
I was disappointed I never saw a script somewhere, and the dialogue omg it was so bad. Both in stilted and "who says that!" ways.
If you are in the right mind frame, with others who are the same and you have absolutely nothing else you remotely want to do, it can be fun to mock this.
Outer Banks (2020)
What were they thinking
Above and beyond the weak writing - I mean at times all I thought was "really!?" - the father showed a real unhealthy obsession for his daughter. It may have been the writing and the actors take on it but seriously you'd think she was the love of his life or something. Sara this and Sara that. SARA! It was just so wrong.
The Big Flower Fight (2020)
Could have been a lot better
The judge is annoying and at one point he actually laughed , and I am talking mean girls laughing behind back laughing, at one of the pairs. Lots of false praise too. The hosts were annoying as well, they are not as funny as they think.
Ghosts (2021)
I like the simplicity
Lot of people are comparing to the original or saying this is low brow; well I like it. It is not forcing a convoluted plot down your throat, it is just a nice and fun watch. I love the husband, he I so laid back and just deals with it. It's 20 mins of simple fun and there is nothing wrong with that. I am big into sci-fi, horror etc and often have to suspend disbelief so that is no issue here. It's cute I am not looking for a show to prove to people how educated and important I am. I just want to be entertained. And this entertains.
Merry Happy Whatever (2019)
Bad Disney for adults
Ok people have mentioned the laugh track so I won't but sitting here trying to figure out why it seems familiar it hit me! This it the Disney style pre teen tv show formated for adults that no one wanted. The filming style, the awkward lines, the laugh track, the scene set ups, it's Disney tweety comedy shows! I guess they are trying to fill a void ???? For those who outgrew Disney tween shows. At least it is not super dark and angsty so yay I guess? If you need to waste time and want something that has absolutely no impact to anything but time it could be worse.
Zombies Have Fallen (2017)
I didn't expect quality but I would have like to hear the dialogue.
I know dialogue in these kinds of movies is not high quality writing but i'd still like to hear it. I "watched" this as I wanted something silly to listen to as i cleaned but the vocals were so low i had to drastically increase the volume and then all "action" scenes were so loud it was painfully uncomfortable. At one time I thought the movie had stopped but when i looked at the screen i only knew they were talking as i saw their mouths moving . I was looking for a waste of time movie and got one that just was so just irritating - then i actually started watching it. It was so bad and i was so annoyed, I finally just fast forwarded to the end - i had to finish it - compulsions and all that. There were some nice sceneries at times.... it would have made a great spoof, Thriller could have been playing in some places.
