Seinfeld: The Race (1994)
Favorite
My favorite episode of my favorite sitcom. The communism jokes are harious and used well throughout each separate plot (my favorite is when Lois tells Jerry that her boss "controls the means of production") and the very idea of a commie Santa is brilliant. The double entendre of Even the episode title "The Race," referring to both the actual race for Jerry and the race between communism and capitalism, is so clever. My all time favorite scene is when George fabricates his backstory in the coffeshop to fool Duncan. The acting and sly remarks between George and Jerry are just top notch. Best. Episode. Ever.
The Simpsons: Warrin' Priests: Part 2 (2020)
The Best Simpsons Episode in Roughly the Last 20 Years
This was a genuinely well done episode and story arc. I really like the overall message of Bode, I find his openness heartwarming and important. As all the best Simpsons episodes are, and great art in general, this story is very much of the moment and encapsulates the culture well. Exclusivity and tribalism are problems in America and the church right now, and Pete Holmes, who not only plays Bode but also wrote the script, tackles these issues very well with frequently hilarious results. I love how effectively he injects his own Christian upbringing and philosophy into this story; the characterizations ring all the truer because of it. He uses various characters to brilliant effect, particularly Lisa, whose own struggles with doubt and religion I've always found relatable, and also Ned, whose dogmatism I've disliked as the show has progressed in years, but who started out as a sincere and loving neighbor. This is one of the first episodes in a while that was not only funny, but poignant. Bode's is a Christian ethos I can ardently support despite my own lack of faith.
21 Jump Street (2012)
Surprisingly funny
Funny movie overall. Realism is thrown out the door early on, and honestly it's a comedy, so who expects much realism. There are some awesome in-jokes for fans of the show, but mostly this is for a different audience (though a lot of jokes are surprisingly connected to the original show, regardless of how different the tones are between the two). My favorite part of this movie is the meta, self-referential jokes throughout, such as not saying the title of the movie at the most cliché moment to do so, and references to unoriginality in ideas, and non-exploding/exploding items, etc. Channing Tatum is also surprisingly good in this movie, plays his character well and humorously alongside Jonah Hill (who I love, though I understand why many may dislike him). Ice Cube and Rob Riggle are also hilarious and the remainder of the cast winds up being very likable throughout.
Very funny and very much worth watching.
