Zeroka no onna: Akai wappa (1974)
Bosoms, bottoms, blood, and bad boys
My first Netflix rental and what a surprise it was! Starting with the subtitles for the opening lyrics: (paraphrasing) "Life is so hard. You want to be back on your mother's breast. You poor puppy. Life will get better." The opening scene is Rei, dancing seductively at a disco and then being greeted and seduced by what must be a Japanese nightmare version of a German dirty old man. It goes on from there. Yoko Mihare, as the female gang boss is pretty good. The crazy gang members are also well suited for this trashy movie.
My summary captures it all think pretty well. There are ample bosoms exposed, butt cheeks galore (both male and female), copious amounts of spurting blood (including great oral discharges that signify a fatal wound I suppose), and the bad guys are really bad. Actually the good guys are pretty bad too.
Not the best but worth a look.
lots of groping
Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)
Bloody Beautiful
Bloody but beautiful. Uma is fabulous and Quentin does it again. And let's not forget Lucy Liu as the Yakuza queen. This movie is woven like a rich tapestry - it shimmers and changes with each new view. I can't wait for Part 2.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
I voted a 10 only 'cause there was no 11 or 12 to choose from
The music, the scenery, the spoken elvish, the Balrog, the little things that someone who did not love the Trilogy would have forgotten, all combine to make this the only film in my life that I have ever seen three times in a week (and it'll be four times by New Years). 35 years ago when I read it for the trilogy for the first time, I absorbed it in 4 or 5 hour stretches of time and never forgot the beauty of the story. I have read it 2 more times since then and am in the midst of a third - reading LOTR to my daughters. They did a beautiful job bringing this to the screen - and yes, I know they changed some things, but Jackson's vision is consistent and clearly he loves this epic. I am sorry that Tom Bombadil is missing and I harbor the secret hope that when the DVD comes out he will be added back in as part of the directors cut. Now the bad news is that we have to wait a year for TTT! What would you say to starting a campaign to get them to release it earlier!!!
