American Gangster (2007)
Very Good But Nothing New
I found American Gangster to be an enjoyable film, it was very well acted across the board (but with a cast including Denzel,Russel Crowe and Cuba Gooding Jr you really don't expect anything less.
However I found that American Gangster really didn't add anything new to the Genre, and although it was equally well directed and acted it seemed to be trying to be the Departed and did not try to add anything to give the film it's own style.
One major plus note for this film is actually seeing Cuba Gooding Jr getting a decent acting role again (after whoring himself off in rubbish family tripe for years on end). The man is a brilliant actor and hopefully American Gangster will see him actually use his considerable talent.
All in all a very good film but it's lack of ingenuity stops it from getting a higher mark.
xXx: State of the Union (2005)
Not as bad a i was told
A friend of mine brought this round the other day he's a big fan of rappers in movies and raved about this flick. From reviews i have read I was expecting this to be unwatchable crap but i was quite pleasantly surprised.
OK it's not a great film but it is quite enjoyable, some of the stunts are so over the top there very funny (whether this was intended i'm not sure). Performances wise there passable and was what I expected from an action flick such as this.
To sum up if your board and want to see a dumb but fun action flick you could go worse than XXX 2
Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith (2005)
Speechless
Just got back from a midnight screening of the film for which i have been waiting for 20 years. And i'm just about to go see it again.
My main reaction after leaving the cinema was one of "Ok now what did I think of that?". To tell the truth seeing Revenge was a very strange experience. What put me off guard as soon as the film started was how different visually ROTS is to any of the other Star Wars films, Lord Lucas seems to have been taking lessons in cinematography as The Star Wars galaxy has never looked so damn good. All the characters now seem to have a new lease of life (especially a very sprightly R2-D2).
Some cringe worthy dialogue aside the acting is far superior to Phantom and Clones. Hayden has really grown into his role as Anakin, gone is the moaning youth of Attack of the Clones and in comes a more mature and moody future dark lord.
Anakin and Obi-Wans relationship is really wonderful to watch in the first half of the film and you can see the disappointment and anguish in Obi Wan's eyes when his Padawan turns on the jedi.
Other great moments include the fight between Mace and Palpatine (An Amazing performance by Ian Mcdiarmid) and the duel between Yoda and Palpatine.
As always with these prequels there are a few niggling things that hold it back. Some of the plot seems a little rushed, Anakin's fall to the darkside could have done with a little more screen time to properly show the turmoil he was going through (but is effective none the less). Also some of the dialogue is absolutely atrocious (only one man can say those lines with any credibility and thats Harrison Ford).
In addition ROTS (on first viewing) seems to be a collection of set pieces (like a best of Star Wars fights DVD might look) maybe this is because they are the most standout things I have yet seen in a Sci-Fi film. Further viewing is needed I believe (like an album it sometimes takes a few listens to properly appreciate it).
So was Revenge of the Sith worth the wait, this is the last new Star Wars film i will ever see, Was this the film to bind the trilogys together to make a satisfying "Space Opera"... HELL YES! Go see it now, Go see it more than once because I think you need to, to fully grasp the scope and feeling of this movie.
Oh and one more thing the ending is brilliant really sets up Episode IV.
Thankyou George Lucas you have made mine and many many peoples lives much richer.
Ong-Bak (2003)
Absolutely Amazing
Just got back from the cinema after seeing On Bak. I must say i am very very impressed. The fight scenes are 2nd to none especially when there are no wire work or special effects involved. Tony Jaa is absolutely outstanding in this movie and i look forward to seeing many more of his movies.
Some of the stand out moments for me include the chase scenes which go on for about 5 minutes and include some unbelievable stunts. Also look out for the director's homage to some of his favoite directors scattered throughout the film.
I highly recommend Ong Bak for any fans of Martial arts movies.
EXCELLENT
Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004)
Thankyou Michael Moore!
Everyone must see this film!. It is of the upmost importance before Spiderman 2 before Hell Boy before anything see this movie. I have never been touched by a documentary film as much as this before absolute brilliance!. Michael Moore has show us the utter horror that both the George W Bush and Tony Blair have put our troops and the people of Irag in and for what?... WMD's? terrorists? hell no! oil and money!.
This is a truly frightening film but also a very necassery one.
One major gripe was because of the american stand point the film was a little one sided there was no mention of the British troops that were in Iraq, but Fahrenheit 9/11 is one of the most enlightening films you will ever see.
Thankyou for all your brilliant work Michael Moore
The Matrix Revolutions (2003)
Makes the first 2 pointless!
I loved the Matrix. It was one of the greatest films I had ever seen and was full of anticipation for the sequel. When The Matrix Reloaded was released I was quite disapointed but thought well it wont be that bad if the 3rd installment is up to scratch... Oh dear!
The Matrix Revolutions is a pointless excersise. yes the effects are amazing (but a little cliche nowerdays) but the story is absolute rubbish.
SPOILER ALERT
The film ends with Neo finally defeating Agent Smith and ridding the matrix of him forever. Does he destroy the matrix? NO! the computers basicly give mankind the choice of whether to live in the matrix or not. But why would you want to leave?. Outside is a baron dead planet inside a beautiful exact replica of 20th century earth. i know which one i would rather be in. So in the end of neo's battle we end up exactly the same as we were just without agent smith. Yay
The 2nd and 3rd installments are pointless luckily the first movie stands alone well enough to just have that in your collection.
Bitterly disapointing.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
WOW!
Well i have just got back from seeing what has to be greatest movie I have ever seen!. Never before have I sat in a Cinema with my mouth open, tears of joy running down my face. Peter Jackson has created a modern marvel, an all time classic. On it's own The Return of the King is an amazing film but standing alongside the others makes The Lord of the Rings trilogy the greatest fantasy saga of all time!.
Brilliant Just Brilliant!
Bo' Selecta! (2002)
Absolute Classic
Bo Selecta is brilliant. If davideo even watched this show he would know that in the 2nd series the michael jackson character carries around blanket and is always followed by Martin Bashir. Secondly the fact that the characters based on famous people don't actually sound like them makes Bo selecta even more fresh and funny. (Check out Britney, David Beckham and the hilarious Mel B). It is true i do find it hard some times to watch Avid Merrion's transilvanian stalker but he is still very funny.
So Schamone Mother F***er
Requiem for a Dream (2000)
Excellent and very disturbing movie
Requiem is brilliant I was totally involved from start to finish. I was moved to nearly tears and unfortunately I could not help but think of my friend while watching it.
Brilliant use of visuals and sound well worth watching.
Eraserhead (1977)
Holy S**t!
Well what can I say I was very disturbed by this movie especially the evil offspring. The industrial noise that goes through the whole movie is especially disturbing.
You are none the wiser for watching the movie but it does the trick in making the viewer feel uncomfortable. Brilliant and shocking
Almost Famous (2000)
My Favorite film of all time
Cameron Crowe has produced a fantastic movie, everything about Almost Famous is absolutley fantastic, The Story, acting, and soundtrack are all flawless.
I can not tell you enough how great this movie is, if you haven't seen it yet get down that video store and buy it straight away. The best film in ages.
The Thief of Bagdad (1940)
One of my all time favorite films
I first saw this movie when I was a little kid and fell in love with it at once. The sets are breath taking and some of the script is damn right hilarious: "You sons of a thousand fleas".
It is always shown on TV late at night or really early in the morning i woke up at about 3:00 am once and it had just started. TV companys need to show a little more respect and put it on prime time Sunday so everyone can get a chance to view this fine work.
10/10
Clerks (1994)
The Movie that started it all!
Clerks is the movie that got me seriously into film making. Kevin Smith's fantastic debut feature takes pride of place in my collection and will always be one of my favorite films. SEE THIS MOVIE AT ALL COSTS!!!
Dogma (1999)
The Catholics are out for blood!
What must be Kevin Smith's most controversial movie is also one of his best. I am a devout follower of the church of Viewaskew and I loved every minute of it. Making Jay and Silent Bob the profits was genius and Jason Mewes's acting gets better. As Leonard Maltin would say 2 thumbs up!.
Chasing Amy (1997)
Kevin Does it again!
Chasing Amy is a great film and a totally different affair to Mallrats and Clerks. I loved every minute of it and the lack of Jay and Silent Bob is forgiven just because the one scene they are in is great ( plus that scene explains the films title). Well worth seeing on it's own but I recommend seeing Clerks and Mallrats first to get some of the in jokes.
Mallrats (1995)
Not the greatest Kevin Smith Movie but still good all the same
Mallrats flopped in every possible way at the box office and criticly. Personally I like Mallrats I think it's witty and really funny. Jay and Silent Bob get funnier every movie and this is one of there best. Anyone who is avoiding seeing Mallrats because of the lame reviews should buy it on video or better still the fantastic DVD it really is'nt that bad.
The Dark Side of Midnight (1986)
So Bad it's Good!
My friend managed to by a VHS copy of this movie in a car boot sale for 50 pence. The acting is very cheesy, some of the facial expressions are classic!. Warning even though this is a Troma films release, hardcore Troma fans will be disapointed cause of the lack of blood, gore and actual shock value. I think this movie has been deleted now but if your lucky enough to get hold of a copy watch it because it's the funniest film you might ever see.
