Late Night with the Devil (2023)
A Retro Horror Gem That Left Me Torn Over Its AI Twists
"Late Night with the Devil" masterfully transports viewers back to 1977, capturing the suspense and terror of a live late-night talk show gone horribly wrong. Directed by Cameron and Colin Cairnes, the film sets itself apart with a captivating premise that blurs the lines between reality and supernatural horror through the lens of television.
David Dastmalchian shines as the skeptical host, delivering a performance that perfectly balances charisma and creeping dread. The supporting cast enhances the eerie atmosphere, making the supernatural events feel all the more invasive and real. The film's visual style authentically mimics 1970s broadcast aesthetics with a 4:3 ratio and vintage color grading, while the soundtrack subtly amplifies the tension.
Despite a slower pace than contemporary horror films, "Late Night with the Devil" excels in building suspense and a foreboding atmosphere, maintaining viewer engagement with its steady crescendo of terror. The use of AI in transitions is a contentious choice, slightly detracting from the period authenticity. However, the overall experience is a compelling blend of nostalgia and innovation, offering a fresh take on the exorcism genre. A must-watch for those who appreciate horror that intertwines thoughtful commentary with genuine scares.
Hanu Man (2024)
Epic Reimagined: 'Hanu Man' - A New Dawn in Superhero Storytelling
'Hanu Man 2024', a PrasanthVarma masterpiece that seamlessly blends mythology with modern superhero elements. A simple yet engaging plot, set in the mythical Anjanadri, captivates with its good vs evil narrative. The film stands out for its unique blend of Indian lore and contemporary superhero saga, reminiscent of 'Minnal Murali's' groundbreaking approach.
Teja Sajja and Amritha Aiyer lead a stellar cast, delivering performances that add depth to their characters. Ravi Teja's voiceover for the monkey character injects a fun element, enhancing the film's appeal. The dialogues strike a balance between wit and wisdom, driving the plot and providing context.
Cinematography by Dasaradhi Sivendra is a visual treat, creating a vibrant and dynamic world. The soundtrack, with traditional chants, elevates the narrative, making every scene resonate more deeply.
Varma's direction is the film's linchpin, balancing action, emotion, and humor with precision. His vision for a film that pays homage to Indian mythology while appealing to a global audience is executed passionately.
'Hanu Man' transcends typical superhero boundaries, offering a culturally rich narrative. It respects its roots while embracing new storytelling methods, setting a new benchmark for Indian superhero films.
However, the film is not without flaws. The scope feels limited, and the villain's reliance on technology contrasts sharply with the hero's mythological powers. Despite this, the CGI and action sequences are impressive.

Class of 83 (2020)
Tough Pick
It's been a while we have seen Bobby Deol in the satisfying role, this is the perfect comeback. The "80's" was a fascinating time in the history of Mumbai and with this film, you feel that era & relive. Good paced movie but the quick jump cuts & missing wow moments, the film is a tough pick.
