American Dad!: American Fung (2015)
So bad, its good, but the subtlety lost on a lot of viewers
A lot of people have rated this awful or brilliant. I can't actually tell if those who gave it 10/10 are being ironic.
But one thing this episode did that no other AD episode has done is get me to write a review!
It is such a bad episode, on so many levels, but, I think, that is the point. It's supposed to be bad, the same way that when companies buy-out others and change things that don't need changing, after promising they won't change things!
This subtlety was lost on a lot of people, so I guess that they didn't do a particularly good job of getting this point across.
But 6/10 for effort!
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: His Way (1998)
Should have been a sub-plot
Don't take me the wrong way, I liked the will they won't they story for Kira and Odo, and there have been other episodes dedicated to this storyline, e.g. Heart of Stone. But even that advanced the Dominion story a tiny little bit.
But this did nothing! Nothing at all!
No Science fiction about this whole episode except the AI Vic Fontaine.
But hey, that's nothing new either. Remember this episode is years after Voyager started when we were introduced to the EMH. Why was everyone surprised about an AI hologram? A year earlier Bashir was going to be the new EMH! And lets not forget Moriarty (TNG: Ship in a bottle) either.
I watch Star Trek for good Sci-fi and humanoid endeavour, not romantic comedy. And to be honest, it wasn't that funny either!
Instinct (2018)
Americans don't understand British detectives!
There is an air of British arrogance about Dr Reinhart, which was seemingly lost on the American viewers. Only a quarter of the Initial 12m viewers saw this through to Season 2.
It's cancelation very much reminds me of Forever, with another Brit Ioan Gruffudd equally arrogant in his methods.
For me, both of these stand side by side with House, another arrogant mystery solving Brit, but with a side order of comedy, which the American's loved!
Why can't Americans take us Brits seriously?
It seems the only arrogant people Americans can stand, are ones that are equally comical... ;)
Wounds (2019)
Good at first, confused ending
Oh I so hate these types of films which a) should have been much better, b) didn't know where it was heading and c) has split genre disorder.
To be fair though, it was all good up to the last 10 minutes. You were thinking some sort of hallucinogenic, or hypnosis, or some such thing, but no it bizarrely switches into some weird occult meets science fiction, rushed ending.
I know this was adapted from a book, but I'm sure the book must have done a better job with the ending. The ending takes place over the final 2 minutes.I'd be really disappointed if the 'real' ending was over in two or three pages.
I don't get the skimping on the ending, or things earlier to explain the ending, its not as if this was a long film.
When I say explain, I don't mean 'join the dots for me', but you have to give more than a 2 second screen shot of an occult website.
The series of events supposedly started with the phone - how, why?
Who was following in the Dodge Charger? Why?
What were the photos about? And the visions?
How did Eric get the phone? In fact what is Eric even got to do with any of the events between the initial fight and the final scene?
And what's with the Tunnel?? If this is Occult, how does that work pre-computers? - But even still what's the significance of the tunnel? Or the high pitched phone call - If its not hypnosis or subliminal messages, what is it? How it is related to the ending?
Why did Will suddenly go from gradual mental breakdown to 'I'm an evil spirit who can summon roaches' and play host to an outer dimensional creature?
