I can't get this out of my mind, and it's been three days since I've seen it. Suicide is a topic that no one likes to ponder, unless you are suicidal. This film tackles a tough subject head on, but I can't help wonder; At what expense?
The heart wrencher, for me, was the last jumper. Gene, his name, is the one that sticks with me. His story is told, via interviews, throughout the film. Eventually, I felt I knew him a bit. At least e reminded me of people I have known. Of course, we see him end his life at the end. This is where I have a problem.
Throughout the film, we see him pace back and forth across the great bridge. The film makers cover him as if they knew he was a likely candidate for jumping. Maybe the editing makes me see it this way, but I have my doubts. When he jumps, the camera is in perfect position to record his suicide, as if the success of the film depended on him jumping. I can't get this thought out of my head.
I still recommend this film, as it is rare that I see something that lingers in my mind long after the credits ave rolled. I think that is the power of film. Still I ask, "at what cost".
