Road House (2024)
It's good
Road House delivers on what you expect it to. Like the first film, Road House goes well beyond just defending a bar, and turns into the wild action film you hoped it would.
Jake Gyllenhaal does an amazing job of pulling this role off. I'm don't know how much training was needed for this role, but I'm sure it was a lot. Conor McGregor plays an insane crazy tough guy. Not much of a stretch for him, but it works.
In the end it's just a fun kick ass movie. The action scenes are done pretty well, especially the last fight scene. Jake Gyllenhaal continues to impress roll after roll. I give the film 7.7/10.
Dune: Part Two (2024)
This is what Hollywood needs!
This is what Hollywood needs. A great story with a great director/producer. After that the best thing a studio can do is get the hell out of the way and let artists create art.
Dune Part 2 is creative, beautiful, tragic, and mesmerizing. Never once did I get bored or anticipate what was going to happen next. I haven't read the book so I have nothing to compare it to.
Denis Villeneuve continues to amaze me with the effort he puts into each of his films. The acting in this film was top notch too. We saw it in IMAX and the sound was earth shattering. If you're gonna see this movie, see it on the largest screen possible.
The Last of Us: Kin (2023)
The show we've all been looking for
While I'm not a big fan of zombie shows, this one feels very different. A lot more to it than the concept. Without giving anything away, this show is off the charts good. You never know which way it's going to go, yet it all makes sense. Each episode feels like it's own movie, connected to the previous one but unique to itself. Similar to The Mandalorian in many ways.
This particular episode further develops the main character's backstory as it pushes forward to tell you more about this new world. The excellent cinematography and acting in this episode help to shape the larger story as the episodes almost feel like feature films in ways of budget and quality.
Still a few episodes left, but so far so good. Based one these one of episodes, I can see this show going for multiple seasons. The show has a great lead actor who can say a lot with just a few words. While Netflix and others pump out a lot of shows, it seems HBO just has a higher quality standard. Every new show they have is made with a lot on investment and effort.
Dexter: New Blood: Sins of the Father (2022)
Damn!
Dexter EP10. No spoilers, but one word, damn! A better finish for a better show. Going back to start season 1 now! Damn!!!! Love this show, excellent writing.
Dexter: New Blood: Cold Snap (2021)
Is he back?
Interesting start. Definitely a slow play back as would be expected. Sets the table for a familiar character in a new world. Excited to see where it goes from here.
The Prestige (2006)
The greatest film no one understands!
This has to be one of the most brilliant films ever made.
It's been 15 years now. In that time you'd think people would have figured out the films secret, yet very few have. And I'll bet those that have likely have a background in magic. Even the critics missed it. It's remarkable Nolan's discipline to the subject matter.
I won't reveal the trick, as the nature of the film begs a magician never reveal his tricks. I will only say pay attention and listen to the beginning and ending lines. Even if you can't grasp it, the film is still excellent. Some of the misdirection will be explained and that is solid on its own.
Remember the man with the fish bowl!
Jungle Mystery: Lost Kingdoms of the Amazon (2020)
Interesting!
This documentary goes a lot of places and gives you a good overview of the early Amazon. It doesn't get into the weeds on anything specific, but that's okay as it doesn't intend to.
Some of the rock paintings are truly unbelievable and really make you think of what a different world the Amazon once was.
WandaVision: We Interrupt This Program (2021)
Better!
Now you have my attention! This show gets better each week. Brings more players to the game, and still has me thinking. Best episode so far!
WandaVision: Don't Touch That Dial (2021)
Weirdly Wonderful
Marvel continues to impress. Solid characters, clever writing. It's still early in the season, but so far I'm entertained!
Tiger (2021)
Good...with a bunch of cheap shots!
It's good to get an understanding of reality, but it comes from low places. I have a better understanding of Tiger, but am not sure getting too personal was necessary, or right. The golf and the battles are always entertaining!
The Mandalorian: Chapter 16: The Rescue (2020)
Well now!
That is how you close a season! Nothing else to say. This show is building a new Star Wars universe that is oddly familiar to the old one. And that's how you do it!
Away (2020)
Great Timing!
This is a show done about two subjects, space exploration and human interaction. Both are extremely relevant right now. As a space junkie I love the subject matter, but I was more impressed with the writing. Real issues, real people. I had a tear in my eye at several points in this show, and for the right reasons. As was said in Shawshank, "hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things..."
Also the song choices for this were excellent! The Pomme song, On Brulera was on point and a great fit. Absolutely worth watching even if you're not into space stories.
Greyhound (2020)
Solid film!
The film throws you into a world of action and survival. Great intensity throughout. Hanks sells it well. Worth 90 minutes of your time.
Yellowstone: You're the Indian Now (2020)
Solid Start!
This show is top notch. While the acting is terrific and writing is strong, it's really the locations that make the show. Beautiful!
The Conners (2018)
Solid Show!!
People are unfair to this show. The writing is spot on and the show still speaks to the average lower middle class American lifestyle in a way no show does today. It deals with real life issues honestly and in a humorous way.
This is a show that can bend the hearts and minds and the writers and actors deserve the credit!
Ozark: Civil Union (2020)
Hold on!
This show maintains a level of intensity few can match. The characters are well developed and I'm satisfied the show keeps pushing and doesn't compromise.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 4: Sanctuary (2019)
This is Star Wars!
It isn't about the force or CGI that made Star Wars, it's about good characters and solid story telling. It's the build and scarcity of things that give them true value. Congrats to Jon Favreau on giving us a real Star Wars story!
Catastrophe: Episode #1.4 (2015)
Great Ending to this episode
This is where I decided this was a good show. It is obviously funny, but this scene was moving. Brilliant!
Lady Bird (2017)
Crash into Me
The best song placed into the best part of the film. You look to be inspired by films. You look for those moments that define life. This film gives you just that. It's about who you are and when you become you.
