As Good as It Gets (1997)
Wish that all movies were this professional
As Good As It Gets is definitely one of the best movies I've seen. This movie depends entirely on it's script and the performance of it's actors, and both were excellent.
If there are people out there who doubt Jack Nicholson acting capabilities, I'd advise them to see this film. The way in which he portrays his character, a lonely and on the surface mean man suffering from OCD is just brilliant. The character was so real, and I really grew to like him during the movie.
And then there's Helen Hunt, I don't care what other people say, she is a great actress and people who say she's not feminine are just plain crazy. I do not think she's the beautiful, but when you watch this movie, how can you not fall in love with her character? To me that is the proof she's is a great actress.
And then there is Greg Kinnear, who also does a great job. This movie is just full of great performances.
The story is funny, dramatic and romantic, it's got it all. The characters are so well written that they feel real, and I like them so much, that I wish they were. The dialogues are great and there is a lot I will not soon forget.
***** Spoiler (start)***** Melvin Udall: Where do they teach you to talk like this? In some Panama City "Sailor wanna hump-hump" bar, or is it getaway day and your last shot at his whiskey? Sell crazy someplace else. We're all stocked up here.
There are so many great scenes; Melvin and his interaction with the dog, and when he realizes he has stepped over the line by talking about carol's son. I also like his relationship with Simon, you can see him wrestling with the fact that he actually likes him. ***** Spoiler (finish)*****
I'd advise this movie to every serious movie fan. For in my opinion; This movie is As Good As Movies Get
Disturbing Behavior (1998)
a teen thriller worth watching
This movie is your typical teen thriller, through the eyes of a couple of high school students we see an "evil" slowly spreading amongst them. It's a familiar story, shown in a different way. Maybe it was the mood I was in, or the beautiful Katie Holmes, but I really liked this movie. Despite the fact that I knew almost exactly what was going to happen the movie still managed to captivate me. The character Gavin, was the most compelling as the paranoid boy, who is the first to feel the "evil" approaching. And let's not forget William Sadler who once again proves he's a great actor. There are a couple of things that where rather disappointing. The plot/climax felt rushed and a bit weak. Legal and social consequences seem to non existent.
If you liked this movie you will also like "the faculty". Another fun teen thriller. With a far better climax.
Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001)
huge disappointment
I was hugely disappointed by this film. I really do not know how they manage to mess things up every time they try making a movie out of games or comic books. Remember that sad mario bros movie? of the x-men. Ok with mario bros it was understandable. And the x-men was also very "fantastic" so I imagine that could be difficult as well (still a poor excuse for a bad story).
But Lara croft, they could have started a whole new line of Indiana Jones type films. But nooooo, babe in tight clothing and a lot of special effects seemed to be all they wanted. The story was ok, secret organization the illuminati and a mysterious power. But they just did not do anything with it, everything is so unbelievable. Angelina looks great in every scene but I kinda expect more from a film. Why would anyone in their right mind decide to hop on a motorcycle to defeat the bad guys when they've got a gun. sure it looks cool but come on!
And with all the high tech we see in the beginning you should think they would be able to keep intruders out. I could go on and on, unnecessary special effects, I think it is just sad how they managed to spoil this. If only they had spend more money on the script and less on special effects.
I really wonder how "spiderman" will be. All this technology and money and still. I mean "Batman" turned out just fine? and "superman". I think they're putting to much focus on special effects nowadays.
Dying to Dance (2001)
A good drama
Every time I watch movies like this it I am amazed how blind people are to their own faults. A good movie, because it really got my juices flowing. I really wanted to yell "snap out of it!!" or shake the main character to her senses. No luck at that, but proof it they did a good job at movie making this movie.
If you like movies like this one, also watch: "For the love of Nancy (1994)"
Scary Movie (2000)
Disappointing parody
This movie has some funny moments. Like the bedroom scene with the homosexual football player and his girlfriend. But most of the jokes were very weak and if I've grinned three times during this movie that would be a lot. Don't get me wrong I love comedy, but to me this was just a collection of mostly weak jokes. A weak attempt to earn money by making fun other movies.
I am glad I didn't watch this one in the cinema, it would have been a waste of my money. This is the kind of movie you watch when it comes on TV, and you have nothing else to do.
A Slight Case of Murder (1999)
Fun movie to watch
I can not say this movie was a hilarious, but I must have had a grin on my face the entire time. I like this darker kind of comedy; "very bad things", "8 heads in a duffel bag" or "coldblooded"
The way the main character tries to get away with murder is a lot of fun to watch. To me it was not much of a surprise what the ending would be, but the way that ending came about was. Another thing that sticks out, is the way they have managed to involve the audience. The way Terry looks at us is hilarious, you can almost pretend you're his accomplice.
The American President (1995)
Great for a romantic day.
This is one of my favorite genres; a romantic comedy. Both Michael Douglas and Annette Bening are great in this very romantic movie. I immediately fell in love with the character of Miss Wade, who starts out so confident but is swept away by the president. They made a lovely and believable couple and enjoyed watching every part of it. But there's more that just romance and comedy. It also shows the dark side of "public opinion", which results in a great speech by the president. This gave the movie a little bit extra and made it more that just a fun romantic comedy.
Groundhog Day (1993)
A movie to watch over and over
This is truly a magnificent movie.
I rented it when it first came out and immediately I was hooked. I watched it alone later with a friend and once again alone before returning it.
I could write an enormous review about this movie, but I'll keep it short since most of it has been said already anyway.
This movie always makes me feel good. One of the most important messages I see is that you should live everyday as if it where your last. It sounds corny I know but bare with me. The character may repeat the same day over and over, but the fact remains that everything he accomplishes, he does so in a single day. In a single day he manages to save lives and make himself loved by everyone. At the end of the movie I am left with a warm feeling. If Phil who started out as a hated and lonely man could turn his live around in (essentially) a single day, then image what I could do.....
This makes Groundhog day one my favorite movies ever. To illustrate; since I rented it that first time, I must have seen it 28+ times. I have it on tape myself, and every time it is shown on TV I just can not resist.
If you haven't seen this movie.. SHAME on YOU !! :-)
