The Diplomat (2023)
Not what I expected
Was expecting more of the same with the Americans but was surprised at how much I laughed and at the level of the writing and acting. I hope they do one being the shore down a dark road which all good shows turned crap inevitably do. Also hope the actors guild strike doesn't affect things. Great bones to the show and not predictable which I appreciate. Lots of foreshadowing which isn't as too thick to give it away.
West Wing is the standard for political shows, but this has a different vibe, more mystery and intrigue and suspense with the usual live triangle. I enjoy how the ancillary characters add to the story and don't feel like after thoughts.
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
No. Plot.
This movie is 3 hours and 12 minutes of no plot. The animation was phenomenal as well as the imagery. No argument there. The foreshadowing of a later event is poorly hidden and thus cheapens the film. There are other plot holes as well. James Cameron also seems to be stuck on themes, earth is not my home, forest is not my home, water is not my home, etc. A subplot regarding a whale creature could have gone into more detail as well. The first movie has adventure sprinkled throughout. This one saved it up for the end and bc we somewhat knew what to expect, just the basics is flying or riding an animal isn't enough to cut it anymore.
My Policeman (2022)
Better than expected
The way the story wrapped up felt incomplete but the acting was surprisingly pretty good. I felt like Harry Styles was better on the more intimate scenes than later but I think he actually did really well. Story is poignant and stirs up lots of emotions. I think it captures well the timeframe it takes place in. I think the story could have built how or why the romances began to make them feel more "earned" or "genuine". There is a story line with a teacher friend and I wish they explored that more. So to summarize, my issues are mostly with writing and tempo of the story than the story like and acting.
Captain Ron (1992)
If you like sailing, this is a classic
Sooooooooo many one-liners here. Perfect comedic low budget classic. Some of the writing sets up the actors for cheesy non-genuine acting, but if you take this for what it's worth , as a lighthearted fun gem, you will not be disappointed. Martin Short and Kurt Russell don't disappoint. "hide the salami in the shower" and "incentives are important" and "always stand clear of the ladder boss" are just a few of my favorite lines. The daughter and the wife have some cheesier lines. Also can we just talked about the idealized male body then and what it has become now? I appreciate Kurt's attractive but realistic body.
Love, Victor (2020)
Losing special sauce
Loved loved loved first season and the. Second season, as many shows do, went dark. Some would say it went real world, but that's not what I loved about the show. Season two ends with a cliff hanger and it better be what I hope or I'm out.
