Bloodborne (2015)
Groundbreaking
Dripping with atmosphere and terrifying. One of the best gaming experiences I've ever had. The gameplay connects with the narrative in surprising ways and it's the best lovecraftian story that's ever been adapted to any medium.
Get Out (2017)
Refreshing and smart
Thoroughly enjoyable paranoia fest with brilliant performances.
Jurassic World (2015)
Insultingly bad, unimaginative and poorly stitched together
Bryce Dallas Howard could have been a great protagonist for this new trilogy if the director didn't seem to hate her, and all other female characters for that matter. There's evidence of a smart character that is destroyed by cliches and bad design and writing decisions.
Doctor Sleep (2019)
Entertaining but dragged down by nostalgia
The movie is at its best when not trying to play into its predecessors success.
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
Not one bad episode
Brilliant performances and great visuals with a story that never gets boring.
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
Good story ruined by bad performances
T'Nia Miller and Rahul Kohli are easily the best part of this series. A shame that Henry Jones and Oliver Jackson were just awful. Their accents were all over the place and their episodes were awkward to watch. Still worth a watch for some fantastic moments and a story that actually ties up quite nicely.
Annabelle: Creation (2017)
It's fine
While a lot better than its predecessor, we've seen this movie a hundred times before.
The Avengers (2012)
A magical cinematic experience
Seeing my childhood heroes on the big screen like this was something I had always hoped for. Time and care was taken to give each hero their moment and it pays off when the action starts. Marvel manages to make this movie grounded in a way that's not broody, but fun and a thrill ride from start to finish.
Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016)
A lot better than it has any right to be
A somewhat cliche but well constructed horror with genuinely frightening scenes.
It (2017)
A sweet movie about friendship that also happens to be a horror
IT smartly focuses on the personal struggles and friendships of this group of kids which rewards the movie with elevated sense of terror as you start to care for each member of the group. Beautifully filmed, great music and good child actors.
God's Own Country (2017)
Refreshingly hopeful and real
A beautifully filmed love story with complex characters that ditch many of the overused indie gay cliches. Sex is treated with the same grit and realness as the awkward emotions of the protagonist and labour intensive farm work. It's a nice break from the tragic endings that usually accompany this genre.
