The Boys in the Boat (2023)
Amazing Story, Fun Film
Boys in the Boat is maybe my favorite nonfiction book of all time. The story of Joe Rantz is inspiring tragic and incredibly easy to root.
The boys in the boat movie captures the beauty of rowing and team work, but it only begins to scratch the surface of the depth of these real life characters.
The biggest flaw in this movie is the writing and at times the dialogue. The writers boil down the tragedies of Joe Rantz and his teammates to simplistic and generic back stories when it would have lead to a more emotional movie to focus on how little these people were given in there life's and how much they were able to accomplish.
While it was still enjoyable and inspiring to watch this classic story, with the material that they had, they should have created a much more emotional and factual film.
I would recommend this movie to anyone but I would highly recommend people read the book.
Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
Halmark level production and dialogue
I went into this movie having heard a lot of mixed reviews. Mostly on the poor side honestly but I tried to go into this movie with an optimistic view but wow, this is really really bad. The cgi and set designs take you right out of almost any scene. On top of that, the dialogue is so very bad it almost physically hurts. They over explain what they are doing in the very moment. It feels like I am watching a hallmark made space film with stiff acting and poor writing.
The bad guys do look like space Nazi's so that feels like a good nod to Star Wars.
All around a very poor effort by Zach. It would have been a great opportunity to compete with film franchise like Star Wars especially after Zach was talking trash about the new Star Wars. In the end a terrific failure.
Barbie (2023)
The Lego Movie but for females
Now please take into consideration that I am a man. And a white man at that.
Barbie was much better than I thought it was going to be. I'm just going to get into what I didn't like. Barbie starts off as a fun light hearted comedy movie. The first 30 mins are great! From then on the movie begins to have an identity crisis. It goes from deep feminist themes to a car commercial to a slide show to a 4th wall break depression Barbie ad and then a musical. One of my biggest problems was that I felt like the movie was talking to the audience too much. Things were being said or done visually in the movie not for the sake of the story but for the audience. Which maybe some people like but to me it kinda took me out of the experience.
Barbie wanted to be taken seriously but because of its inability to be consistent and justify the actions of certain characters and events it left the audience behind.
Like what is the purpose of Mr. Buisness(Will Ferrall)? Is he good? Is he evil? Does he care? Does he just want money? Why does he ask like a Barbie but he's from the real world?
At the end of the day I agree with a lot of what was being said and the themes that were built. I just don't think the movie is for me... at all. But I didn't hate it and Ryan Gosling gets a 💯/10.
Knock at the Cabin (2023)
Drax good. Dads good. Little girl good.
Knock and the Cabin was so much better than I expected. In todays society I feel like whenever there is a gay relationship in a movie, Hollywood always tries to shove some sort of "social justice and everyone is homophobic" messaging down your throat and it ruins the story. This was done in the most tasteful way I have seen in a while. The acting was all around very solid with my favorite character being the little girl. Drax killed it as well. The music was also very thrilling. But most of all I just liked the themes. One of the dads really helped me understand why he hated the world so much and why he just wanted leave the world to burn. Kinda fire film definitely some flaws and if I wanted to get into plot holes I could but a pleasant surprise!
Andor (2022)
When is Palatine gonna be here??
When the first episodes started to come out I watched them weekly until about the 3rd week. I kind of became bored and stopped. For some reason, I just didn't think a whole show of Star Wars without lightsabers would be entertaining enough. A few weeks ago the show finally finished its first season and everything I was reading was about how great this show was. After watching the rest of the season in a week, I realized this was the best Star Wars show by far!
The story is so meticulously written with side plots, characters, and themes that only add to the overall story of Andor. Visually this series is stunning. The costumes, even the background characters make this show feel real. I also really enjoyed the score for the most part.
My biggest complaint of this show is that between shots they use mostly fades in and outs and not slides like in the movies. For me, the changing of scenes with slides goes hand in hand with the Star Wars universe and I really missed it.
The story at times is a little slow and I could understand how this show is not for everyone. Even with the slowness, everything matters and adds to the story.
Really one of the greatest shows I have watched recently!
I hope the writers at Disney take a lot from how they did this series.
Moon Knight (2022)
Some how, Palpatine has returned!
Moon Knight is probably my favorite Marvel show of this new marvel tv show wave.
As a fairly big marvel fan I had no idea what moon knight was all about and I think marvel new most viewers were in my same boat. They leaned hard into that mystery for most of this series.
After watching the first couple episodes I felt lost but in a good intriguing way.
While this show had a few sequences of poor SGI and stiff dialogue, I really think it shined as a stand alone marvel series.
I liked all the characters. Ethan Hawke gave an eerie and enjoyable performance as Harrow. I also really liked May Calamity as Layla.
As a whole, I really enjoyed my self while watching this show.
Moon Knight tries to tackle a serious issue of mental illness and abuse and it does it in an empathetic and enjoyable way. Thanks to the wonderful acting of Oscar Isaac.
I would highly recommend this show to anyone and even those who are not marvel fans.
CODA (2021)
A better high school musical.
They could have nominated a worse movie for film of the year. Coda is pretty darn average though. Not very masterful in any category. The biggest problem of the film was that it was very cliché. From the cinematography, the script, the story, and even the cheesy montage. It's just not that interesting of a movie. It felt like a film school student was writing there first coming of age story but she had to add a small twist. At the end of the day it taught good morals about family and living your authentic life. I respect that but this is truly one of the most mediocre films I have ever seen.
Morbius (2022)
Jared Leto kinda carries
The best complement I could say about this movie is that Jared Leto is the best part. Good for him. But overall the first 45 minutes or so of the film are quite ok. Just a classic anti-villain origin story. The movie gets really bad when they fully introduce the bad guy.
The truth is this is the exact same as a lot of other marvel movies just with a less interesting story. Its hard to make these movies not seem like fan service when they are always teasing characters from other movies.
Lars and the Real Girl (2007)
Kinda Genius
I went into this movie thinking I was going to be board out of my mind but honestly it turned out to be a good freaking movie. I mean who thinks of a movie with this wild premise and then turns it into a heart string pulling, thought provoking, romantic film. Seriously a good film with great acting and great morals.
Dumplin' (2018)
Running is evil
This movie is really really bad. I understand that we don't need to shame fat people. But being over weight has serious health consequences. More than 34 million Americans suffer from type 2 diabetes and this number is only rising. A diagnosis of diabetes will effect everything from your literal mood to the chances of you dying of a heart attack. I get that the girl in this movie has a hard life cause people make fun of her cause she is fat. And obviously that's wrong. Buy lady, maybe you should think about running with the other girls. The health benefits are life changing.
Jungle Cruise (2021)
Talk about cruising
I really feel that when they finished the filming for this movie they had a fairly decent family film. It had some funny moments, big name actors, heck even a sufficient cliche plot that could have cut it. However, who ever put it all together must have been on acid or something! I really don't ever feel dizzy during movies, but man this one almost made me sick. Not only was the plot so incredibly quick that I didn't have time to think, the editing was so bouncy. It felt like the directs didn't want me to look at the cgi sets for longer than a few seconds because they thought I might find them fake. In the very last fight scene there was so much going on with the plot and the screen was jerking between shots so quickly I really couldn't follow along or, by any means, take it seriously. To some it all up, really a wasted movie that I didn't need to see. I'm just gonna stick to pirates of the Caribbean.
Hawkeye (2021)
Fun but more of the same
At this point do we really even need to watch these shows. Like yeah there are some fun scenes and I really do like Hawkeye but I just knew exactly how this show was gonna pan out from the beginning. Cliche passing of the torch. A character who is close to the main side character is actually bad. And then they introduce a comic book character to draw in some excitement. It's ok but I just don't really need it.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
20 years in the making
Spider-Man no way home is really a one of a kind film. It's funny, it's full of crazy action and it brings back some of the greatest super hero villains in cinematic history... and the greatest Spider-Man characters too! This movie was literally too good to be true and that's thanks to all the past films. It did a great job at drawing from the "fan service" side of things without making the movie seem to superficial and creating a new and interesting story along the way. This is a much more serious and intense movie than the last two and I really feel like this is what Star Wars the rise of Skywalker was trying to do. Bring back the old to enhance the new. Not bring back the old to destroy both the new AND the old. Really fun and maybe the best fan service movie ever!
Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (2001)
Respectable but very confusing
First of all I am American and I haven't watched anime in the past. I wanted to see this movie because of its great reviews and resilience over the years. All together it was a very interesting film. I loved the score, the visual effects were stunning. There were scenes where I felt I was watching a Claude Monet painting. Stunning and very very creative. Even the characters developed beautifully. My biggest problem with the film was the randomness of the story. Granted I know nearly nothing about Japanese folk lore. The story was all over the place with random "side missions" that some how ended up helping the girl reach her goals. A lot of things that happened seemed to fall into place too perfectly. But we are talking about a film where a girl enters a magical spirit world so maybe it's not that hard to believe. Overall I think it deserves the recognition that it gets. It's fun to watch a movie that isn't made for my type of person that is still enjoyable to experience.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
A reboot that isn't trying to overwrite the original?
When was the last time there was a decent no agenda fun family film? I don't know but here is a great one! It kept the same silly and unserious energy as the original which made it really easy and fun to watch. Paul Rudd is great and I also really enjoyed McKenna Graces performance as well. I usually don't support overdue reboots but if you're looking for a good move to enjoy with the family go see this!
Spencer (2021)
If Diana was a psychopath and a lesbian...
The music was interesting when it was playing and the scenery was pretty. Kristina delivered every line of dialogue in the exact same tone and voice influx the whole film. I was really confused what the point of the movie was. Were we supposed to feel bad for Diana and were they trying to paint her as a victim or was she supposed to seem insane, overly dramatic and unlikable? It was too long and i don't think the directors knew what point they were trying to get across. Wish it was better but really not a cohesive film.
The French Dispatch of the Liberty, Kansas Evening Sun (2021)
How much more Wes Anderson can Wes Anderson be?
The visuals, the music, the acting, the symbolism is really all on another level. It's beautiful to watch and intriguing to listen too However this movie is so difficult to follow. I felt more confused watching this film than when I saw tenet for the first time. Wes Andersons Production continues to improve in each movie that he does but I think he needs to slow down just a bit so his audience can better understand his creative mind.
No Time to Die (2021)
No Time to Review
From start to finish a very strong and entertaining film. Going into the film I was a bit nervous that a main plot point was going to be the struggle between the new female 007 and James Bond but thankfully it wasn't over done. The film did a great job at taking in many different plot points that had streamed from previous bond films and tying them together. Not being an avid James Bond fan there were a few moments where I was a bit confused by the plot but i was able to piece it all together after with my wife in the car ride home.
Pig (2021)
Refreshing and beautiful
In a culture where it seems that every movie is trying to do everything at once it's amazingly refreshing to see a movie choose an identity and stick to it. Every scene is shot beautifully and in a way that shows you what to feel instead of telling you what to feel. The acting was all around great. Mr cage did a good job at not over acting. Great film!
