Being Human (2011)
Remarkable and tremendously enjoyable
This was a really remarkable and tremendously enjoyable, supernatural soap opera.
So a newly turned but well meaning, though somewhat neurotic werewolf, a centuries old vampire, a recently murdered and pretty ghost, are all trying to be more human in an eccentric Boston house share.
There is another addition to the share when the werewolf gets a fellow furry partner.
I really liked this show because the cast and writers were able to build incredible empathy between the characters and viewers in this series, regardless of their disastrous supernatural lapses and flaws.
It was a highly engaging production with attractive characters all around, even if most of the supporting cast end up erm, dead!
There is a kicker at the end which will suck you in regardless of the implausibility, mainly because after 4 gripping supernatural seasons, viewers will probably accept anything from these guys.
I have not seen the UK original series, but the USA version definitely stands on its own merits.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018)
Best not to try to deconstruct this production.
Jeez what an absolute horror of a show to watch, mostly with absolute trepidation at the next surprise upset!
The problem is that it is all done really well, so well in fact, that the show has an 'addictive' quality to it!
Its maybe best not to try to deconstruct this production as it seems to borrow from and be influenced by several multitudes of literary, dramatic, supernatural, folkloric, comic book, TV and cinematic sources. It seems intentionally designed to be both familiar (in the use of old tropes and known themes) but also surreal, (in the way they are stitched together) like some monster mash-up of 'over the top' scary stuff.
The overall arch of the story is towards 'tragedy,' because for every supernatural problem or monster solved or vanquished there is always more creepy stuff dished up till the darkest season 4 finale.
Of course we love Sabrina but she is literally the spirit of a doomed, youthful optimism, literally born into into a hopeless plot, in which both she and the viewer is wrong footed at every twist and turn.
Pretty much everything that is nice in the show, Sabrina and her 'nice' life and pals are destined to collide with wrong path, witchy, satanic and fearfully nasty, dark narratives.
But its a great cast in a very polished production, you can only admire the professionalism that delivers such a stark teenage supernatural horror, despite professing to be a bit camp or introducing older and more modern teenage themes of e.g. Gender identity.
So we end up with a very visceral, actually chilling production, going overboard in buckets of slapstick gore, never-ending dark themes, hellish tableaux and a stream of evil upsets.
The show creeped me out a few times and had to take a few breaks from watching it too regularly and I am an older guy lol.
Main criticism, well don't watch it if your mood is a bit low because cheery it is not. Some threads that may have been for a future season were left hanging suggesting an unforeseen discontinuation; and there are maybe a couple of plot holes, distortions from previous versions, anomalies and disappointments in there as well.
But overall, its such a compelling horror that it is ironically a great show and its the enormously likeable Sabrina and supernatural magical problem solver Ambrose, that keep it all going.
To the saddest, darkest and most bitter endings unfortunately; but some will still miss watching it.
Cowboy Bebop (2021)
Such a great opening season, Netflix should think again about retaining it.
I came to this show without any background knowledge of the anime original and was totally hooked by this live action, full production values version.
It has great sets, great characters, brilliant storylines and that special quality narrative that really makes you want to know what happens next.
Action sequences are very good, if over the top and live action heroes and villains engaging in comic book violence works as well as in any other good series.
The retro futurist look and design will have you accepting old junk, new tech, strangely familiar streets on other worlds, spaceships, what seems like almost instantaneous, artificial worm hole travel, mostly without asking too many questions.
If you start to lose your 'suspended disbelief' you can probably fall back on it all probably being set in some other, very weird, part of the multiverse!
The noire detective feel also has room to acknowledge old school martial arts, blaxploitation and it even drops in a few verbal references to cult sci-fi movies.
It is unrelentingly violent in parts but not entirely grim like some shows.
I watched the first episode of the anime version out of curiousity and the live action version production crew has definitely taken the grainy old anime and filled it out in so many ways.
Everything from the plot, the storyline, characterisation, film titles, music, action, are all taken and enhanced to a super realistic quality.
I would watch further seasons if they were available but failing that will have to fall back on the animation to see if it reveals what happens to the storylines left hanging in the season finale.
Meanwhile maybe expect this live action version of Cowboy Bepop to become a cult classic in itself.
The Outpost (2018)
Compelling narrative
Watching this show will fill the gap in anyone's 'swords and sorcery' viewing.
The great narrative and good storytelling easily outweighed any early issues in physical production values and model making.
Production values definitely improved with the progress of the seasons.
The acting was professional and Jessica Green as Talon was an impressive and hard working lead among a host of sometimes quirky but likeable characters.
It was also largely unpredictable with sub plots and long term narratives that only become clearer with the full development of the story.
The unique and original storyline should appeal to fantasy fans.
It will be missed!
The 100 (2014)
Harsh endings..
The last episode was particularly grim as some of our longstanding, heroic characters (and villains) finally met that final sharp object, or bullet etched with their names.
The living remnants of the human species find some kind of salvation but as a viewer it seemed more like one final breath.
Maybe that explains the final postscript kicker of a slightly upbeat ending?
One last chance to see some of our longstanding characters united in friendship again in their physical bodies on earth..
Though even that is tinged with sadness; maybe because the last season was filmed in a corona year?
Maybe its possible to catch up with what some of the actors had to say about the experience?
Definitely, a trippy, white knuckle ride, to watch the whole series.
It will be missed by fans.
