Maxx (2005)
Hilarious Iranian Comedy!
Watching a lot of Iranian comedies, I find them to be tacky and interesting at best. After watching Maxx tonight, I have to admit, this took the cake! Maxx is a café singer in Los Angeles and is invited to a prominent cultural event in Tehran. He is astounded by the warm welcome since he finds himself to be nothing special. He's very clueless and finds out eventually that the invitation to Iran wasn't meant for him but to another fellow with the same name, who has prominence and his music falls in line with the conservative government's values of Iran. Maxx's character in Iran had heads scratching, especially when he starts crying when he sees an Iranian toilet for the first time and starts singing cabaret music at important cultural functions! When the government learns the true nature of Maxx, all hell breaks loose! The story ends happily with Maxx being given a chance to do a concert that he was promised and then to leave, along with him fixing the lives of his hosts who were estranged from each other or very conceited.
Overall, this story is heartwarming and a funny edition. If you enjoy international films and comedies, then this should definitely be on top of your list.
Loose Change: Second Edition (2005)
What an Amazing Comedy!
Loose Change 9/11 has got to qualify for the genre of comedy! It was stupid and uncanny. At most, it should be a mockumentary. There were no facts in this film AT ALL. It had to be the biggest load of rubbish I have seen on the internet. Mind you, I'm 20, and when I first saw this film, I was shocked and horrified and labeled myself a "truther" because I couldn't believe why or how the US government could get away with such a thing. I then decided to investigate, and boy was I wrong! At least I looked around and saw that this is simply a conspiracy theory, but what about those precocious ones who aren't able to tell fact from fiction? It really is sad that in order to get revenge for being rejected to film school, Dylan Avery decided to start a synthetic rebellion and he became rich from fiction that he put together at the expense of those lost on 9/11. He is just as bad as the terrorists out there.
Eight Crazy Nights (2002)
They're called holiday comedies for a reason...
Honestly, this film isn't as bad as they say it is. Some funny instances, some sad and some that just really puzzle you. Adam Sandler plays Davey Stone, the town drunk whose life is a total mess. An angel known as Whitey Duvall comes and saves him from going to jail. It baffles me as to why the others critique this film so seriously. It's just a comedy, it's not supposed to make you analyze what the future may hold. Just watch the film, get a good laugh out of it, like me, and go on with life, because that's all that comedies do. This film is a modern day version of A Christmas Carol, with a Hanukah undertone. It was a good film to watch and laugh at and that's all it will be, nothing more.
Casino Royale (2006)
It's Bond as a human, isn't that amazing!
I saw Casino Royale on opening night and even though it was missing Moneypenny and Q, the characters we have come to know and love, I have to say that it was a good movie. We see 007 receive the 007, and he gets busy on his mission. This is a younger version of James Bond, and he is a character that we can all relate to, he's not a suave and smooth agent who enjoys his vodka martinis shaken, not stirred. He's Bond, as a human! He makes mistakes, he runs through walls, he trips and falls, he creates havoc when there shouldn't be havoc. This is a character that we can all relate to! I recommend seeing this film when you get a chance and also, stop wailing on Daniel Craig, he's not THAT blonde!
Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (2006)
Hilarious!
I was privileged to receive a ticket to see an early pre-screening of this film and let me just say that I wasn't disappointed! Usually, for a film with a lot of hype, you'd expect that the movie will be terrible and only the scenes from the trailer are good, but this was not! I was thoroughly impressed at the way that Sacha Baron Cohen is able to use his character to pick out the foibles of everyday Americans and reveal our inner stereotypes that many harbour for others. Some scenes were pretty disturbing to say the least (Like a nude fight between Borat and his director), but it simply added to the humour of the movie. I highly recommend this film, but only if you're not planning on being overly critical about certain creeds and races.
