The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008)
Better Without The Mummy Name Attached?
I think that was their main problem here...
This would've worked a hell of a lot better if it had been just another random action movie, because it's not necessarily bad... it's just that ultimately it doesn't really feel like it is part of the franchise.
The characters wondering around the screen may share the same names as the ones we've all come to love, but that is ultimately where the similarities end. Even the roles still filled by the same actors feel almost out of sync- almost but not quite.
I understand they were trying to avoid a carbon copy of the prior movies, but severing all ties with them wasn't the way to go about it.
Also the changes seemed so god awfully unnatural. Evie and Rick becoming frigid and English and largely estranged from each other and their son. Alex bitter and distant. Jonathan... who although unchanged still managed to seem not quite right.
Also no offense to Jet (I love him I do) his character was a poor substitute for Imhotep though and the lost of Ardeth was another downer.
Finally the fight at the end- Rick, I love you I do, but you would've had your arse handed to you. I mean seriously consider the fight from the end of the Mummy Returns and then this one and I think you'll pick up the problem I have with it.
All that said- it's not a bad movie, it's a passable action, it's just a really weak sequel.
Deadly Skies (2006)
Gay Film... What's the Big Deal
If you wanna get a decent feel for this movie going in... really try'en picture pretty much any crappy action/sci-fi movies since the 80's- for anyone who's a fan of genre you'll understand what I mean, if that's not your thing then you'll sit through his looking at your watch going Jesus Christ please just end now.
If that is your kind of thing make sure you watch the version of this called Force of Impact, unless you are also in fact a fan of gay cinema... don't worry boys it's pretty hard to get the 'gay' themed copied... I should know I had to dig high and low for it.
For those of you looking for the unedited copy good luck...
But this is what I really want to impress upon people. Pay attention: this is a b-grade action movie where two of the protagonists happen to be gay (cute together too). Now there was an earlier review on here complaining how no 'gay' movies have any substance and the ones that do are written by straight people and so on. Well I won't even try'en discuss the fallacy of logic on complaining about straight people working on gay movies...
But about quality... now gay people do this all the time... they complain about Dante's Cove and about Hellbent and so on... and about how these movies don't depict the gay lifestyle accurately and there all bad soap operas and that they all make gay people look like their crazed sex addicts... and usually after that complaint will come the statement... the only good 'gay' movie was Brokeback Mountain and that was made by straight people... Have you ever seen Brokeback Mountain... seriously... what a piece of crap- I'd rather poke my own eyes out than... But that's beside the point...
There for entertainment purposes only folks... not an autobiography for the gay community... if I what something close to real life I'd become more involve in reality TV... yuk...
I mean my god not everything made has to be an earth shattering revelation about what it's like to be gay... speaking with insider information... it's not entirely different from being straight.
Devil May Cry: Debiru mei kurai (2007)
Oh No The F-Word
Franchise- it ruins a lot of things...
So I was recently shown this by a friend- having been a fan of Dante since the first Devil May Cry game I was deeply intrigued. I've been holding my breath for a movie for over a year now and I have to admit I am a little bit of a sucker for the franchise- so I am biased. But I must say all and all the anime is not that bad- not at all actually.
The only problem I can see with it is that it is attached to such a large franchise and a lot of people go in with very different and very definite views on how the characters should be portrayed and what they should act like. Also this seems to be set after the first DMC movie, rather than the third- which I think throws a lot of people as well. The third game happens to be a prequel to the first and portrays Dante as being very cocky and sarcastic (think demonic teenager). The first sets Dante a more of a brooding protagonist and the anime has him as an odd mixture of the two.
Now although its not anything groundbreaking, I think people need to except it for what it is- a beautiful addition in the franchise and a fun way to spend a few hours. If you want something deep and meaningful, there are many other anime titles to choose from- also as far as anime titles go you can also do a lot worse... Ninja Resurrection for one...
