Nero Wolfe (1959)
Available on YouTube
It is fun to see a 28 year old William Shatner in the role of Archie Goodwin almost a decade before he became a major icon as Kirk on Star Trek. He seems well suited for the role of the heavyweight detective's assistant and foil. A pristine copy of the pilot episode is available on YouTube.
The story is NOT from a Rex Stout book and the manner is more comical than dramatic but it is a fun quick moving half hour. I am surprised the pilot went unsold. Kurt Kasznar as Nero Wolfe does well as the Nero Wolfe title character. Fritz, Saul Panzer and other regular Stout book characters are not in the pilot. There is a scene with an orchid it but no orchid room or elevator. I expect the surrounding settings would have been improved had the pilot sold as a regular series.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
A piece of garbage
I could not believe the positive high ratings for this movie. My spouse and I walked out of a theater half way through this film because it was so awful and this was before it became noted. We tried to watch it again online after it was nominated for a best film Oscar thinking we had missed something. It is even worse on a second viewing. If you hated this movie you are not alone. You are simply guilty of good taste. This movie deserves a Raspberry not an Oscar.
This is one of the worst films in cinematic history. Avoid this travesty at all cost. I cannot describe how terrible this film is. Under The Rainbow and Mr. Mike's Mondo Video are classics in comparison. Ed Wood deserves an Oscar before the director of this movie deserves one. Awful film. Avoid.
Flight to the Future ...to the World of Plastics (1952)
A 1952 advertisement for the plastics industry.
Interesting as a curio with Noel Neill of Lois Lane fame as the lead character in the story-ad. It has some interesting info in it. A 2022 follow-up ad today on the plastics industry would be worthwhile. Of course, we now know about some of the environmental problems caused by plastics. The full 39 minute film is available on YouTube.
Undertow (1949)
Hitchcock-like wrong man film
Alfred Hitchcock is my favourite director of all time bar none. If you are of a like mind you will also love this film noir in the Hitchcock form very enjoyable. I had never heard of this movie until I came across it on YouTube. Scott Brady is very effective in the wrong man Jimmy Stewart type lead male role. William Castle does a fine job as director.
Indices (2015)
Now available on Amazon Prime.
A Forensic Files type show from France. It is well done. It comes with English narration and English subtitles. The first three seasons are available for viewing. It stopped production in 2018 (Season 4). 32 episodes are available. It looks at murder cases that have taken place in France. It treats the cases as whodunits.
Fabian of the Yard (1954)
Scotland Yard's Dragnet
There are a handful of episodes available on YouTube. If you are a TV history and film buff like me, it's worth a look. The stories cover various crimes and are based on true stories. Fabian was a real Scotland Yard detective and the real Fabian appears at the end of each episode to briefly discuss the case covered in the episode.
Star Trek (1966)
Rewatch the Digitally Remastered Original Series on NetFlix
I saw the original series as a young child and then later in reruns as a young teen with commercials and on 60s/70s black and white or colour TVs. I am in the midst of watching the entire series again in order and the beautiful quality of the visuals has made the series even better. If you are a young science fiction fan, give it a look. I think it holds up well since most of its stories deal with universal truths. The quality of the remastered version is up to modern standards.
Killer on Board (1977)
Just watched it on YouTube
It was an average quality VCR TV rip copy with commercials included. The parallels to Covid 19 on cruise ships is prescient. Lots of good B-level actors from the 1970s have small parts in it.
