Bathory (2008)
charming
I saw the film yesterday and it charmed me. It is a very attractive version of the life of countess Elizabeth Bathory, one in which she is not a murderer but a victim of a plot carried out in order to spoil her of her fortune in the medieval Hungary. Anna Friel made a great role. She a stunning beauty as the countess Bathory, in front of our eyes seems to be the real countess who somehow managed to come in the present times. The passionately love story with the painter Caravaggio is very catching. If I would have lived in the 16th century and I would have seen Anna Friel as the countess Bathory I had fallen in love with her for sure. The rest of the actors and the director did a good job. Apart of Anna Friel I liked Hans Matheson especially, who played Caravaggio.
Vaya con Dios (2002)
interesting and nice
The movie is very nice. I had noted Daniel Bruhl before and I think he is a wonderful German actor. I saw him firstly in "Joyeux Noel", another good movie.
The scenery from the movie is beautiful. The acting of the main four actors is more than good. The human nature, with ups and downs is well presented in this film. It is a film about the special relation between people and God and the relations among the people. The trip of the three monks, forced to leave their peculiar unique monastery from Germany, broken, belonging to an order excommunicated centuries ago by a pope, to the sister monastery from Italy, the last one of their order of "cantors" is both a material and a spiritual trip. The play of the principal actors is sometime funny and sometime very touching like the three monk group itself. Although they are so different one from each other, Benno is the erudite guy, the intellectual type, Tasillo is the natural while Arbo, interpreted by Daniel Bruhl is the young of the group, the artist, they are united in their love for God and for the music, the milestone of their order. The Gregorian chants, which I always loved, are superb, both as plays and as interpretation.
Once escaped in the real world Arbo would fell in love with Chiara, the sharp journalist. The three monks and the journalist will have a lot of adventures. At the end Arbo chose Chiara and the real world.
The character Chiara interpreted by Chiara Schoras is both brilliant and very sexy.
Casanova (2005)
outstanding
For me, Casanova is a good movie. It is very well played, I could name David Tennant, Peter O'Toole, Laura Fraser and Rupert Penry-Jones, to name only the top four but all the actors are very good on their parts and the idea behind the plot is special.
The idea is about the love of your life lost despite your will as a result of an unfortunate fate, love that you never forget and that you keep it inside you wherever you go. Casanova got imprisoned due to fake charges brought against him by the wealthy and powerful Grimani, love blinded and lost his lover Henriette in favor of the latter. Casanova escaped only to became an outcast. He will never see again the town of Venice in his life.
Maybe Casanova is not a model of a good man as it is presented in the movie although he is a good man indeed. He did a lot of crazy things, he had an odd life but he is absolved because of his burden of the lost love for Henriette carried everywhere with him. We can suppose that a good part of his crazy acts are done in order to forget, to keep his mind and his heart busy. Casanova never gives up the hope to meet again Henriette, who also never stop loving him, to be sometime again with her. Although the destiny doesn't help him to regain her helps him in his very last moments to die happily with the thought that Henriette was going to him and with her name on his lips.
Maybe the actual Casanova was not the idealist person from the film and maybe the movie doesn't observe rigorously the historical facts but the result is more than enchanting. Like in the Dumas's novels the result is far away better than the reality.
The last but not the least I would like to note the music of the movie which is beautiful and fits perfectly the plot. Their dance from the final is memorable.
