The Sympathizer (2024)
Terrible
As a Vietnam era veteran I could not wait to see this series. After viewing 1/2 hour of episode 1, I turned it off. Just terrible. The acting, the actors, it had nothing to do with war. I felt there should have been scenes that depicted a military camp or soldiers. It just didn't make sense to me. What was it about? Maybe I'm getting too old but I just couldn't follow the scenes or the actors. What they said made no sense to me. I expected a lot more from the individuals that put this together. The whole Vietnam era is very touchy with americans. I thought this would be made with A Touch of Class.
Robert Downeys makeup was a joke. The other reviewers loved it. I will watch it one more time. But I don't think it's going to get any better.
Stealth (2005)
Terrible
This is a ridiculous movie. It features 3, B list actors who could never resemble pilots. I cannot believe this film cost $125 million dollars. It's a joke. It's a waste of time. The concept and execution make very little sense. The only reason I gave it two stars is because you can see Jessica Biel in a bathing suit. And how did the producers spend $125 million making this film? It seems to me that most of it was done digitally. The four Jets that are the stars of the movies don't have enough Wing area to actually fly. A few years ago the movie Midway was produced for about $100 million. And it was 10 times better than this movie. And it was made with actors with very little name recognition.
Extortion (2017)
Not plausable
I did enjoy the movie and had to watch it more than once. A few things did bother me. Why did this man's son speak with a bit of a Mexican dialect? Why did this man leave his Resort in a boat with no supplies? Not even water. He did not even bring a cell phone. Being a novice why did he pilot his small outboard boat away from land? Why wasn't he even concerned about where he was?
I was also confused about his wealth. When he first met the Pirates on the beach he told them $40,000 was all he had. And then it turns out he's got 189,000. And how could a bank in the Caribbean transfer his money from an American account so quickly?
If I were him when the pirates originally brought him back to the island I would have contacted the police and Coast guard. I would have used some of my $180,000 to hire a helicopter or an airplane or a large boat. Those are the things that bothered me.
Word of Honor (2003)
Read the book.
I read this book by Nelson DeMille in 1986. I just re-read this month. During my second read, I could not put the book down. Over 500 pages and I wished there were more.
Unfortunately, the movie did not do the book justice. Don Johnson has great appeal but the other characters in the movie did not develop.
A solid movie theater remake with someone like Mathew McConaughey or Ben Afleck would work well. It needs to be more than a 90 minute movie
to be a hit
Midway (2019)
Like a spaghetti western but on water.
The actors were terrible. Only a couple of known actors. The greatest battle in WW 2 and we get rookies. Woody Harrelson was terrible. It was like he had a load in his pants. Nimitz needed to be a Kevin Costner, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Ben Afflek etc. The only parts that were worth watching were the fake ships and battles. Aaron Eckhart as Lt. Col. Doolittle was pretty good though. He is becoming a top star.
I am a veteran from 1969. I have always enjoyed all wartime movies. 90% were done very well. This was not. And I did not like the wrinkled heavy khaki uniforms. At least put them in the light weight summer uniforms we have all seen in every Navy film. Wearing heavy cotton jackets in a tropical setting made no sense.
All in all, I taped it and I will watch it many times. But only because of the history and special effects involved NOT because of the actors.
One item about any Pearl harbor movie: Please don't have sailors struggling to hold on to anything on the deck of a sinking ship in Pearl Harbor. What will holding on accomplish ?? Jump in and swim 100 feet to shore in 85 degree water. Silly but true. Sailors are NOT in the middle of an ocean with sharks and 60 degree water.
Lost in Translation (2003)
Bill Murray at his best.
I really enjoyed this movie. 1st time I saw it years back, I did enjoy it but I needed to see it a few more times. And that is exactly what I do with interesting movies. I watch them over and over and pick up some new details each time.
It is quite apparent that Scarlet's husband in the movie does not enjoy spending time with his wife. ( Kind of reminds me of my marriage and mistakes many years ago.)
Bill Murray handles his serious role very well in this movie. At the end, you wanted him to win.
I turned the volume up on my surround sound speakers in an effort to hear exactly what Bill says to Scarlett on the street in the last scene, to no avail. My guess is he told her that it would be kind of impossible to end up together. BUT, that in reality was exactly what they both wanted. If he were single, he would find a way to make that happen. If Scarlett was single, he would make changes in his life to end up with her as soon as possible. She is a big-time keeper. And since Bill acted very professional in his role in Japan, we all wanted him to win and get the girl. These two people would think of each other every single day moving forward with their lives. And it is going to be painful for both...
Mob Town (2019)
Fun movie
Mob town was a comedy. It brought to light the mobsters gathering in upstate New York in the fifties. It's a cute movie to watch when you're bored or there's nothing else on. Jamie Lynn Sigler did some very nice acting in the sopranos. But her acting in this movie was a joke. It was hard to tell if she weighed in at her normal 120 pounds or the 180 pounds it looked like.
There is one goof I cannot let go unnoticed. The police lieutenant was wearing his silver lieutenant bars Incorrectly. They were off by 90 degrees.
I do find it hard to believe that this movie maker staff did not realize this and place the bars correctly.
Crooked Hearts (1991)
Enjoyable
How to parents name their child Ask? The female roles are weak. Vincent Do nofrio has always been an actor that's a bit off. In some of his movies you wonder what you will get. From his dark portrail of a newly minted soldier in basic training, to this movie where he seems normal, then to his later movies where that dark person returns.
This show reminds me of one of my favorite shows Crash, from 2004. You have to watch it a few times to understand the different movies within the movie. I liked the movie. I saved it and will watch again and again.
