Black Adam (2022)
Incredibly fun superhero slugfest
If you've ever wanted 2 straight hours of superheroes duking it out, this movie is perfect for you. Not only is it always high octane, but it's really good in terms of delivering it's action. The cinematography and CGI are both great and were much better than expected, the choreography for the fights is really entertaining, the acting is very appropriate for the movie, with no one other than the main child actor being "bad", but this is to be expected from a younger actor. The score is also very enjoyable surprisingly.
The plot of the movie is very simple and pretty similar to the plot of "Batman vs Superman". Some might say that's detrimental to the movie's quality, but this isn't an Oscar worthy movie, it's a simply fun superhero movie, and for that, it does it's job pretty well.
Also, stay for the mid credit scene, it's amazing :)
Bullet Train (2022)
An entertaining rollercoaster of a movie
I did not expect this movie to be as good as it was. The plot was intriguing all throughout, and the plot twists consistently kept you on your feet. The acting and the chemistry between actors was all stellar and elevated some scenes even further. The visuals were beautiful and the score was perfect for a movie like this.
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
A very solid, fun movie.
In my opinion, this movie is slightly overhated. I'll get the bad things out of the way at first.
It has WAY too much humor, to the point where it's almost unbearable at times. It is very obviously rushed, with some characters like Jane not getting nearly enough development. It has some very shoddy CGI at times, but nothing outright horrendous. Finally, it suffers from a weak first half littered with too much childish humor and not enough focus. The plot is a little too simplistic, but it does the job.
As for the good. The acting is fantastic, specifically Christian Bale as Gorr. He absolutely steals the show. Tessa Thompson, Natalie Portman, and Chris Hemsworth all deliver great performances too. The soundtrack is also amazing and it had me jamming out all throughout the movie. The visuals for the movie are very unique and diverse. Gorr is one of the best villains in the MCU, his sheer presence is terrifying. Sad we didn't get more of him though.
Overall, you have a very fun time for all ages. A solid 7.5/10 from me.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022)
Fantastically nerdy Sonic movie
It's hard to find something to hate about this movie. It's energetic, it's fun, it's witty, it's funny, and most important of all, it's extremely entertaining. The cast all play off of each other and especially Jim Carrey, who seems like he's having so much fun at Robotnik. Idris Elba is a surprisingly fantastic Knuckles too. I was cracking up at almost everything he said. The voice actor for tails is great too and perfectly portrays the youthful nature of Tails, Ben Schwartz as Sonic fits so well, but since he was praised enough for his role in the first movie, I don't feel the need to add anything else about him. Another great thing that I didn't expect was the action. It was so well done and so colorful, every scene was worthy of a rewatch. If I had to give a critique, it'd be about 1 small arc in the middle. The movie completely changes it's focus to a wedding, which, while not being horrible, just feels out of place and slows the pace down a little bit. Overall a great time and definitely the best Video Game movie of all time.
Rescued by Ruby (2022)
Feel-good family friendly fun
This movie doesn't reinvent the genre, but it does it damn well. Grant Gustin plays a ranger who serves his community and is a family man. He does it well, and his acting feels authentic. The dog's actor is also good and definitely plays the part of a hyper active shelter dog pretty well. Overall a very good family movie and good to watch for a nice distraction.
The Batman (2022)
A perfect year 2 Batman movie
My god. Even the relatively high critic reviews don't do this movie justice. I went in with high expectations and they were more then satisfied. Everything other than a few nitpicks is perfect. The cinematography is a 10/10. Gotham is gorgeous. The acting is disturbingly fantastic. The action scenes are taken straight out of the Arkham games. It's a masterpiece.
Only short nitpick I have is that Batman wasn't shadowy enough. In a few scenes he just straight up walks up to places when you'd expect he'd enter through a window or something. Also the Selina Kyle romance was a bit rushed but the movie had so much going on I can't blame it.
Jonas Brothers Family Roast (2021)
Wasted potential
For a group as controversial as the Jonas Brothers, you have a ton of material to use in a roast, instead, they kept repeating the same jokes over and over without them ever really being funny. Didn't help that there were no actual comedians in the cast other than Pete Davidson, and he barely had any screen time. The format was also really messy, it felt more like a documentary about the Jonas brothers than a savage roast meant to humble them like what Comedy Central usually does. It would've been alot better had it been hosted by Comedy Central and had they been less family friendly with it.
He's All That (2021)
Not good, but still enjoyable enough
I went into this movie preparing to criticize all of it, and while I still did, it wasn't as painful to watch as I thought it was going to be before I started it. Don't get me wrong it's still a generic bad Netflix rom-com, but it did have it's moments (like basically everything Matthew Lillard's character did in the ending). Cam's character (played by Tanner Buchanan) was actually much better than I thought he'd be, he was surprisingly well written for a movie like this, and I actually related to him at times. Addison's character on the other hand was as generic as you could get in a movie like this, and even though you can tell she tried, she wasn't a very good actor at all, looking out of place in almost every scene she was in. I think one of the main problem of this movie is how cliche and predictable it is. I played a little game where I tried to guess what would happen next, and every single thing I guessed came true, the story is the exact same one we've seen in other Netflix teenage romance movies, and the "villian" is about as shallow as you can get. Overall it's a 6/10, and I'm only rating it positively because of a certain character or two that were great to watch.
