The Rocketeer (1991)
It's a good bad movie
I kinda have a soft spot for some movies like this that make a whole hearted effort to be good even if it didn't work. It's a fun family movie and I would like more of it's kind.
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004)
Doesn't get enough love...
I can only give this movie a 10 when I wouldn't change a thing. It wonderfully captures the spirit of an earlier time in movies.
I love what they wanted to do and every minute of how they did it. I wish this could have at least been a trilogy. I give extra points for a plot that does not involve the standard villain to battle. I've read negative reviews by those with apparent attention deficit disorders who'd found it to move too slow or not have enough action. I do not agree at all, but if this movie does require an appreciation for the process of unraveling a mystery, I find that a plus. This movie remains in my top 10 Sci-Fi movies still and probably always.
Lost in Space: The Challenge (1966)
An ending of anti-Star Trek sensibilities
I came here to see if any other reviewers had a problem with accepting the ending of this episode and apparently it's just me.
We are given no information about the "monster" in the cave that is about to be slain as a self esteem booster. Maybe it deserved this fate for some reason we are not told of but all we see is a being minding it's own buiseness in it's home and looking in curiosity or fear at those who have come to kill him/her. The assumption that the being deserved death solely based on it's appearance is disturbing to this viewer and this episode would have been made more palatable had they justified his/her slaughter. As it is,all we walk away with is "UGLY IS BAD,IT SHOULD DIE". Star Trek this ain't.
The Cheap Detective (1978)
Not for me
I bought this movie on DVD on a whim because I love 70's Columbo and like old detective movies and like "some" comedy. I liked The In-laws so I knew Faulk could do quirky humor. He's even often funny in his own way in Columbo. But I find this movie just as stale and dry as could be. The whole movie basically takes place in a few rooms and the dialogue including Faulk's Bogart impression just isn't holding it all up. With more happening and some interesting locations and an interesting plot, this may have pulled off a great simi-regular detective movie with a bit of humor injected. But as it is as a comedy it's trying to pull off an awkward quasai Naked Gun type joke every 8-10 minutes and it's not working on any level. I'm in the middle of my third time in 5 years I've tried to like it. I still don't know or care what is even happening in it.
Soon I can take it out and put it away, that's what I'll like the most about it it.
Mortal Engines (2018)
No worse than other mindless fun
I'm accualy watching this right now, about 3/4 through. Saw in a Walmart bargain bin & it looked interesting, watched some reviews. Said nagonna buy it, naaagonna buy it... bought it. (Dana Carvey doing George Bush) So as this overblown yawnfest is wrapping up and I have no idea what's happening or why, I will say the money is on the screen. This is a bad movie but it's loaded with spectacle. I'm keeping this DVD & putting it in my good bad movie section.
With The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
Sky Captain
The Rocketeer
The Hobbit
2000 Leagues Under The Sea
Return of the Jedi
Star Trek movies
Godzilla 2014
You get the idea. There's a place in my heart for this type of decent budgeted, well meaning flop & I like this one too, it's fun.
AC/DC: No Bull (1996)
My favorite of the Brian era concert DVD's
Of the 3 shows currently available on DVD with this line up, this is my favorite.
Brian's voice is strong, the stage doesn't yet have a runway, and better yet all the fans don't yet have goofy flashing horns.
If I wanted to nitpick I'd say Brian's singing suffered while he was riding the wrecking ball.
If I was introducing someone to this band I'd show them LET THERE BE ROCK the movie so they'd understand the Bon era, and then NO BULL so they'd have a taste of the Brian era.
I have the original DVD release as well as the directors cut but it's been so long since I watched the first one I can't really comment on the difference. Some other reviews have complained about the sound quality and I believe the directors cut was re-mixed & improved. If you buy it new now you'll probably get the directors cut.
AC/DC: Live at Donington (1992)
Could've been better
I would & should be rating this a 10. This is my favorite band and having these concerts on DVD is wonderful. I'm afraid I'm of the ones that didn't like the sound being fixed. I knew something was up the first viewing when Brian was briefly singing with his mic down a few times and some of Angus's solos looked fishy. I've read the Brazilian DVD release has the original sound as on the VHS tape, wish I could get ahold of that one. It's hard to tell the extent of the tampering in what songs because of the choppy editing hiding it. I'm thinking it was mostly in earlier portions. Maybe there was some feedback or the guitar wireless cut out, that's life, I want to see the real concert. Let There Be Rock the movie wasn't a night of technically perfect spot-free audio but we got to live in that moment. When you start over dubbing songs you rob us of being there. I still have this DVD and try to pretend it's all really happening that way when I watch it but I give higher ratings to their next 3 concert releases.
Fatal Instinct (1993)
Depends on your sense of humor
Really I'd give this movie more of an 8 stars but it deserves a better average. Moments were a 10 for me. They threw alot against the wall to see what would stick.
As a fan of the Naked Gun movies I appreciate this humor. The casting was great and it was fun seeing Armand Assante play this unusual & intense roll. He was perfect for it. Don't listen to critical snobs putting this movie down. Humor is subjective. If it made you happy it was good. Watch it with a group at a party.
