Auggie (2019)
Quite real
Even though this film has a science fiction element it is not really about artificial intelligence, but more about a lifeless, middle class, job and success oriented way of thinking and living, hence a similar (also one sided) marriage. Sad but quite real. The ending is irrelevant and shallow, still somehow it reinforces the idea of living in a society where self-deception is a skill in chasing a false notion of moral correctness.
The Half of It (2020)
Tender and poetic
Sweet coming of age and out of closet movie with a modern time Cyrano de Bergerac plot. If it weren't for one of those inexplicably unavoidable public announcement scenes that it has, it would be a 10.
The Favourite (2018)
Finely embroidered Baroque Court of England
Interesting sound track consisting in beautiful baroque music alternating with some very rudimentary disturbing musical effects, beautiful photography and attention to detail, excellent acting from almost everybody, an interesting chapter in British history and a story about power struggle of women in a period of male dominance.
Man of Tai Chi (2013)
A bit too simple
Even though it manages to create a feeling of being in China especially through decent photography and frequent mandarin dialogues, it can't avoid looking as if the plot was just an excuse to tie the fight scenes together.
Coffee Shop (2014)
Has good potential but badly realised
It follows the formula of hundreds of romantic comedies but with a good script and execution that wouldn't have been a big problem. Nevertheless, the script here is week and combined with mediocre acting it constantly creates moments that make one put a sour face. Both the photography and the music aren't very original either and even tacky in places. Continuous soft lighting and repetitive sunset scenes become monotonous quickly. Finally, if you are not a religious person the occasional God talk and a bible shot might even be more distancing. Still, despite all its flaws I was able to watch it through. So, I can't say its a terrible movie but if you're after something a bit more original and well taken care of you might want to look for something else.
