The Legend of Maula Jatt (2022)
Very Well Done!!
Ok I was a bit skeptical going in because of all the hype and drama around this production but I was pleasantly surprised. Simply put- this film has high entertainment value, you will not be disappointed. Without giving away any spoilers, I think Bilal Lashari has done a great job in recreating and retelling an iconic Punjabi-Pakistani story. Having taken inspiration not only from the original Maula Jatt (1979) but also from the Ahmed Nadeem Qasmi's short story "Gandasa". I think this film does an incredible job of bringing this tale to a new generation, while still preserving the original punjabi dialogue. There's always an added pressure on the actors for remakes especially for cult-classics such as this one, however Fawad Khan as Maula Jatt and Hamza Ali Abbasi as Noori Natt did complete justice to the characters. In fact all the actors (save for one actress, you can guess who) gave solid performances. Beautiful score, incredible cinematography, all in all this film is really really wonderfully done.
The Time Traveler's Wife (2022)
Season 2 NEEDED URGENTLY
I really do not understand HBOs decision to not renew this show. It's smart, clever, funny, charming and just entertaining to watch. Ever since I binge-watched it I cannot stop thinking about how beautiful yet dangerously underrated this show is. If you've read the book or watched the film adaptation then you just have to give this a shot. It's complex, surprising, intricate, and just heartbreaking at times but it's worth it. Whether or not this show gets picked up for a second season by hbo or another streaming site (pls help netflix, amazon, hulu, starz, paramount...) the first season is a splendid watch, which will leave you wanting more (which maybe upsetting if there isnt a second season) but you'll be really glad you watched it in the first place. Also Theo James is just gorgeous as Henry.
Eternals (2021)
I don't understand the negative reviews
This is a great movie. I really enjoyed it. I think it does well in terms of entertainment value and story-telling. Great chemistry between the cast & the diversity doesn't feel fake or forced. High on emotions and explosions. It's got all the makings of a good Marvel movie.
Also, side note but- this is the most beautiful ensemble cast I've ever seen.
Bridgerton (2020)
Has potential for improvement
To me it felt like they were trying to force a storyline but they themselves just didn't know how to execute it. Not just with Daphne but like even with Lady Whistledown. I cannot tell you how many times I forgot about Lady Whistledown until they mentioned her. With Daphne and the Duke everything happened SO quickly, there was hardly any tension, no jealousy or burning declarations of love, which is what you expect from these period pieces, because it's taboo to express your romantic feelings openly during that era, and when that happens it's like the most raw and intimate thing shared between two characters (the rain scene in Pride and Prejudice),but they just couldn't execute it well enough.
I love the Duke (Regé Jean-Page), I think he's very hot and it's about time we had a man of colour portray the handsome royal in these shows, but even with his storyline they could've done so much. With his childhood trauma, his daddy issues- I feel like he should've had, in fact he deserved to go on that hero's journey and finding out that he's not this emotionally detached fu*kboy that he thinks he is. I feel like we were robbed of his emotional development and seeing his feelings for Daphne develop as he finally accepted himself as the man he is when he's with Daphne.
I feel like he should've left the country, so that there was something he and Daphne both yearned for, some burning desire that was emotional and not just physical. And then when he came back (in the next season, preferably)they could reunite and have that burning love, that indistinguishable fiery passion, because they realised what they mean to each other.
That being said, I did enjoy it, I think it's light entertainment- fun to watch. A bit slow at times and some storylines can easily be removed. But the clothes, Jewellery, the set design is remarkable. So just don't expect a lot from the first season and you'll be a happy viewer. Let's see what happens in the 2nd season...
The Great (2020)
Magnificent. A must-watch!
This show is a masterpiece. I cannot stress it or exaggerate it enough. Although, It is wildly inaccurate it is just as thrilling. The fun is all in the subtle nods and nuances to the history which inspires these characters.
The costumes, the sets, the ridiculously hilarious dialogue- everything about this show is great! Never found myself to be a fan of Elle Fanning, but after binge watching this show I would easily take a bullet for her! She is exquisite and so is Nicolas Hoult. Can't imagine anyone else doing justice to these roles as they have. To me this show is perfection, I've already seen it 3 times. It's just such a solid production.
Overall it is a beautiful show filled with excellent dialogue, beautiful scenery and storylines which will make you laugh and cry. Absolutely refreshing and extremely clever. A must watch!
