After 20 years of Memento Mori (1999)
Memento Mori ( 1999)and Moonlit Winter ( 2019)
These two movie are famous Korea lesbian movies. Two movies have a 20 years gap. Therefore, two shows how Korean's idea of lesbian have been changed.
Let's start with Memento Mori, imagine 90's or -if you live in a country where is lesbian is well accepted than imagine- 80's high school lesbian movie, Korean version is this one with a little bit of horror. There is a couple, one knows she loves another but another doesn't know it is love. Because of this gap and other students' lack of understanding, the main issue in the movie. And we can easily think this will be heading in a depressing way.
In the Moonlit winter, a couple also have difficulty. This time they(Yunhi and June) both love each other and know it. But the family thinks lesbian as a disease. So they eventually separated from each other.
About 20 years later, the daughter of Yunhi read a love letter that was sent by the aunt of June. And the daughter plans to make them meet again. The couple who broke up because of a disagreement of another family member, got a chance to meet again with a new family member. Wow
My favorite scene of this movie is when two new families, Sebom- the daughter of Yunhi- and Masako- the aunt of June-, talk in English which is not their native language. -Sebom's native language is Korean and Masako's is Japanese.- They have a common goal " the reunion of two " and it is from kindness. We can see Yunhi and June didn't forget the past. Two, one from the young generation and one from the older generation tring to fix an old mistake made by other family members show how korean's ideas have changed.
Like me, most people saw Memento Mori and Moonlit winter in order. Even if two couples are not the same person I can't stop hoping that a couple from Memento Mori will end up like a couple in Moonlit winter. In the country where Iesbian is now starting to admit (or to most of elder it is starting to exist). Moonlit Winter is the best scenario for a couple from 20 years. Like the name of the daughter of Yunhi, Sebom in korean is new spring, I wish lesbians for a good new start like spring.
So if you want to know how idea of lesbean in south korea have changed this is the two movie you have to watch.

Man-Bok is: Man: million of, Bok:Luck?
As a citizen in South-Korea, news about North-Korea is always breaking news in Shows and daily life. But at the age of about 20-something-adults, we don't have a big desire for nation's reunions. Same to me, and even what I thought was if Our nation became one nation Man-Bok's dream will come true!
Man- Bok is a character from the movie "Queen of Walking, 2016". I think her name Man-Bok is: Man: million of, Bok:Luck? There is no way I could find out if it is right or wrong but if it's right, her name seems to misfit her. Due to her car-sick she could only transfer from place to place with her own legs. She has a crush on a boy with bike who is kindly willing to ride her on back. Due to her car-sick she couldn't ride. She is just a normal girl who is unluckier than everyone. One day, she starts a Walking race team in her school to be champion....
You might think this movie is a sports movie, yes, and a teenage growing up movie, yes. But I want you to see that this is different. How different?
Spoiler,
She walked to the champion tournament the day before -like I said she couldn't ride.- She was in a race and suddenly gave up. She learned she wanted to be champion because everyone said they have to be something. She chose to be herself. It is a remarkably shocking ending in South Korea. It was a comedy and unpopular movie so it didn't have a big effect on the audience. But a country where winning is all. And It was at least the most important thing to the old generation. And We 2030 refuse this idea. Like it there is no benefit by reunification with the north. We are not going to do it. We choose to be me not old, something that has to be me.
P. S. If Someone like Man-Bak wants that we can consider.

"If you could choose to work in a movie site "House of Hummingbird" or "Parasite", where would you choose? "
"If you could choose to work in a movie site "House of Hummingbird" or "Parasite", where would you choose? "
I asked this question to many of my movie lover friends. Be cause it was in a theater at same time and critics loved both movies. But "House of Hummingbird" was well-known for poor working conditions and on the other hand "Parasite" was well-known for good working conditions. First, most of my friends chose "Parasite" even though they liked the other more. However I added one more to the question. "If you don't work on the site of "House of Hummingbird, Movie might not be finished." Then most of my friends said they will work even with poor working conditions.
We, me and my friends who support the movie women's movie are very serious about showing ticket powers to movie companies. In Korea, It is real to see women directors in major movie scenes. I know most countries are having the same problem but we are taking this seriously. So the second condition I asked my friends was not only some of my mean characteristics to make friends in trouble but want to see my friends feel the same as me that they are prioritizing women's movies more than any other movies.
So, the movie is about a middle school student named Eun-hee. Her family doesn't show interest in her and even her brother hits her. Outside of her school and house she is more cheerful. She has a friend who is also a victim of violence and a boyfriend, nice to her, these two make her alive. One day, She meets a new teacher who is even polite to youth.
The movie is very quiet unlike the Oscar award movie. Even the romance is not sweet. But why my friends liked it was because it was about us. Most of us are not important in the family if there is a brother. And not like unrealistic fantasy high teen movies it makes us feel comfortable. If you are Korean movie lover you will know there are not many teenage movies in Korea. Because the older generation didn't think school life was important. Important thing is going to a good college. We don't think it's true. It is possible I want to make precious memories with friends and family and not be ignored by parents and teachers with my test score. The Movie was hard to watch, it was very real. Many people feel helpless and lonely on these days.
Yes, we want to see more movies that talk about us - Korean women- like something even if it is miserable and lonely.
