The Alfred Hitchcock Hour: The Lonely Hours (1963)
"Dark lady" no black magic but sinister none the less
What baffles me is:
1. Vera invites herself in when the children tell her to wait.
2. She scopes the place, then she pauses peering at the noise record player taking the liberty of silencing it..
3. Louise mother gets off phone "oh hello" to the mysterious stranger. Mom was feeding her infant son daughters and friends girl.
4. Vera sets herself down and makes herself at home by the baby and right away stops baby from banging spoon.
5. Louise doesn't ask any credentials at all takes for granted this woman knows her husband due to what Vera says. I guess we were more trusting in those days?
6. Vera does have an apartment other than the room, all decorated for the baby and a creepy looking baby boy doll that crawls up ones spine!
7. Vera takes lonny the baby on outings lying g to the maid.
8. It irritated the H out of me when that maid took heresy of Vera "She said it would be OK with you." Ide be livid too! If it didn't come out of my mouth why would she take the word of a stranger?????. I believe she'd get walking papers. For the only reason of going against what was originally agreed upon. This is her child!! Ide be frightened
Thank goodness she found him. I guess Vera as disturbed as she was couldn't think of everything including leaving coat. Thank God baby was OK. He wouldn't have been as soon as he'd start crying uncontrollably Louise at her place. Police woman showed up and handled it so cleverly and compassionately.
It is scary and utmost disturb I ng that. Her husband left her she went into pre labor the baby died she unhinged. Losing a child I can never imagine. 😔 she'll get the help she needs so badly. Whether she will ever come to terms with her loss or not many times "they" don't.
Bonanza: Tommy (1966)
Reminds me of another blue eyes with hoss
This show is as sweet and touching as episode found child. Little girls name was Lisa and Dan blocker was her beloved guardian as he is tommy. So many adorable children have been on this show. Pernell roberts said the show was limiting and always a father in charge as adolescents. Still this show was for family about a family. This was no more violent than any other show and addressed all sorts of issues way ahead of its time.
Not to rehash the episode but it drew me in way back when as now. Tommy was sent to ponderosa to keep him safe from his outlaw step-dad. Most reprehensible sos. He hides out at the farm she's to afraid to speak to law, he broke out of prison. Wanting to take Alice with him and hidden cash away to Mexico without her deaf mute son whom he has zero tolerance for. Eventually Mexico is their life she misses her baby Jess doesn't. Eventuaaly ben takes little man to his mother I could feel their love and joy. There lives a monk brother Nicholas deaf mute as Tommy Allie asks his help! He fetches ben at ponderosa which again Jess don't like and tries to shoot him in the back probably her too. He finally gets his. Brother Nicholas comes back with Allie and son to start a school for others w I th Tommy's condition.
Lisa and Tommy capture the heart as dan blocker I have the best memories it helped shape my charachter. This show was of great value...to me anyway!
Bluffing It (1987)
Pride goeth before a fall
The world leaves you far behind when we lack basic skills. I do feel for him I am computer illiterate nursing got tougher some of it was (to me anyway) like mathematics go fig!! Notation. I still stand by a cursive signature computers get viruses, hackers etc.
Now the show I was that child in class only first grade. Hostile is as hostile does you ain't gonna learn squat. Teacher should take charge at school I was teased lots arithmetic class was when it ended like he did book closed lesson over with me "I don't give a damn if I ever learn it!" That was too bad too because I wanted to learn so badly. This man is prideful in his situation it makes him feel less a man. His behavior towards his family is inexcusable. He insults his son never praises him just criticises. His wife is loving and patient he should have told her right off. Still wears his letter man jacket I guess that was the highlight of his life. How could the school not notice that? Dumb question. Schools were just as inept then as now. I feel for him but yet he gets irritating with his stubborn pride. That accident was horrific thank god he didn't kill anyone. He needs to get over himself as difficult as s it is for him. He does overcome and takes the bull by the horns!
Cher with Beavis and Butt-Head: I Got You Babe (1993)
I love it!!!
I am shocked I didn't see this in 1993!? We watched Beavis and butthead every week. I certainly loved cher. Anyway the colors and art design were superb. They kept me in stitches everytime. Watching this brought back many memories. Watching sonny and cher every week,(mostly to see all her lovely outfits!) I got to see them in their heyday in 1972. The first time I heard I got you baby I was a little girl I loved that song and I tried to remember that when I hit some tough times. Remembering love and what it connected to. Different ways it was sung. On this video cher you do it perfect. Yes I got you baby one of my children loved this song... still does.
The Waltons: The Theft (1973)
"Rosey glasses"
Not my favorite episode 😢 the acting was okay. It starts out john fixing an exhausted refrigerator and receives only a dollar. In those days most people got a dollar a day at the time I thought southern aristocrats can't do better? The show goes on about the aristocrats accusing john of theft. The mothers silver set. John comes back with some items dis questioned about where he got it even evades his wife. I like the way eb the sheriff tells off those neighbors about not paying john money they owe for wood deliveries haha! That son was such a weak wimp, to stand by and have a man accused of what he did. The mother comes over demanding the silver. She understands desperation, john tells her he's innocent. Finally john tells all. Weakling sneak son finally tells all. Telling his mother he was taking care of her the way his father did , she just needed to keep being the fine lady she was and be pretty...pretty. Finally she apologizes and makes her exit the son does apologizes to john and family and is told that don't cut it. Kid states he's ashamed john accepts that. Stuart Claiborne asks john boy to look after Amelia the girl who was destined to be another mrs. Claybourne as to she's part of the public school system now. No college. Anyway it was johns right not to tell where he got the money, it would be hard panning a wedding ring. I think waiting so long only worsened it at least tell his misses. That son was a pain. The brothers did great as slueths!!
Bonanza: A Single Pilgrim (1971)
Goodness,decency and love wins
I saw this episode as a girl. Bonanza was my favorite from the time it first came on in 59. The music and watching hoss cartwright, he was my favorite person drew me in. I believe it helped shape me. My attitudes, seeing decent people helping others.
I could see kind and ever loving hoss being accidently injured and brought back to be doctored by a lovely, intelligent equally kind and decent woman who was treated so miserably by her father in law frank. Dilcey and Tom are the couple who lo e each other. Sadly the son so beaten down by his father he and think at all. Now fil is a sorry pos and "a chunk of mean man" the world owes him and feels entitled to take what he wants. (Sadly I have encountered many on my life's journey exactly like this charachter. Real life!!!) Dilcy despite all the verbal and physical cruelty by fil tom don't help. Hoss can't believe he does nothing. Fil strikes hoss already head injured and threatens life. Dilcey enjoys talking to a man for a change. Her and Tom had a baby on their way out to gold country a.h. Fils idea no gold the sickly baby died also. She kept her beauty despite the ruins esp. That shack they squatted in. Hoss made her want to clean up the place and try to pretty it. Tom tries but her sass got host's horse free he'd find his way home. Fil raised cain, stole hoss wallet and his guns. Felt entitled the endless excuse "I did it for you!) What really did it for Tom was when frank was going to shoot hoss due to his idea he'd go to the authorities and claim murder. No hoss wasn't doing that. It's just fil's twisted thinking and life. The ways of a tyrannical patriarch. Tom wrestles with him the end I thought it was Tom gone , no I was glad he lived he declared his love for dilcey and life would be different. Filling her life with beauty and his love. They were free birds and wildwoodflowers.
Bonanza: Clarissa (1967)
Most irritating episode
Usually Nina foch rates higher on my scale. Meddlesome, manipulating and insufferable. Sticking her nose in and up at everybody and everything. Her attitude towards hop sing was what did it for me (that pretty much goes for anyone for that matter) don't mess with the man's kitchen it truly was his domain. Perhaps she meant well? She wanted to be useful?. It is is true she put such a rift between everybody! Bens friends, his employees, his sons. That b.... couldn't say anything g to anyone without being insulting. Back east snobbishness. Yes, her high handedness disrupted the peaceful ponderosa. Chaos is what she was about and I agree it was difficult to watch. Not my favorite.
The Twilight Zone: A Nice Place to Visit (1960)
HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! raspberry
That was a fit ending for rocky valentines realization of where he ended up! According to the hall of endless records he never did anything good or positive for anyone just desired and took. I knew that place was not heaven especially with the hall of records. I learned 😌 there were no records only forgiveness. Rocky was way passed that. What an ill tempered, petulent little git ruled with tyranny his life entire never happy. There he had all he ever wanted money, opulence, women, booze, and fancy clothes food I thought spaghetti and a bananna split was hilarious!. Mr. Pip. That was a great innuendo regarding his favorite color yellow. Suitable definition for him. Sadly the color yellow is bright and happy opposite of him. After an hour of winning all he wanted he is puzzled when pip asks him what next. Rocky didn't know he sure didn't want much did he? Getting all we ever wanted has its limits if material is all we hold priority. After he ran the beauties off, one at pool, obviously something was off about the fruit. Mr. Pip is summoned. He is so bored with winning he's going crazy. He wants to rob a bank but wants a chance to get caught randomly. No such thing. Rocky finally spells it out I don't belong in heaven see! I wanna go to the other place! Oh the excitement of going. Pip stands up and spills the beans "whatever gave you the idea you were in heaven mr. Valentine? THIS IS THE OTHER PLACE" (trombone) he looked insulted with rocky. His expression I've never forgot it OMG 😲 I do wonder will he have his girls, liqour? No appetite he's dead after all. He was to dense to have more substance such as books art. Sitting there blank. He may start remembering what put him there in the first place. People he hurt, the little dog etc. Too late.
Little House on the Prairie: The Bully Boys (1976)
How to handle bullies
Reverend aden ws stupid in this episode. Turning the other cheek is good teaching but... not always good advice. These three belligerents come into town with every intention to swindle the town people. They were just foul men who obtained anything they desired by oppressing others. What I too found it interesting is how quickly mrs. Olessen gave them credit no question asked and denied charles who recently purchased land. Lying to the reverend mr.hanson and the olesons about their mother very sick" revenge alden "turn the other cheek" it's taken literally. Georgeand Sam are the oldest Bubba the younger terror. He hits girls mary lies about what the creep did. The others continue their bullying getting away with it they go to far when they harass Caroline on her way to olesons. Just the expressions and body language is enough (good acting) they keep her from her journey she's helpless looking for help with none in sight (that was odd usually someone was out and about) scream woman! Anyway she swings her basket of eggs when George touches her face. Yuck! And runs off. Charles comes home seeing something wrong asks she tells him "silly, I should have given them the eggs" She truly looked violated. Charles gets the truth and like a man goes after them getting beat. Dense alden confronts the Ingalls are you sure Caroline? Charles tells him to leave. Bubba continues his tyranny and Mary slugs him one then all the girls let him have it. Alden finds out the mother ran off with a drummer years ago. He finally wakes up. The Sunday sermon was great he speaks to those three specifically saying there are some who are just evil. Using people hurting people. George speaks up you talking to us anyway smarts off alden grabs hold of him puts arm behind his back hard. He tells alden well be outbefore nightfall. Rev. Alden tells him I love it"you get out of and take only what you brought with you. Give another thought before you take advantage of decent people!" Yes one can learn a lot from children. He and Charles amend and the town people march them bully boys out of town. This was a good episode painful to watch. Sometimes you gotta fight "when you're a man" that goes for women!
Loose Change (1978)
Great series!
I was a young woman when I first saw this I loved it. I loved the sixties I wish I had been grown up and on my own. Or living by myself. These women were all so different but alike in ways, looking for meaningful relationships, careers and most of all love. Kate everso independent journalist. Jenny, impassioned with civil rights married to a known civil rights advocate zany leader. Tania the quiet lady living in the sophisticated art world. They all find love but none of it turns out to be what they thought it should be. All living through turbulent history of the sixties. Kate who never lies on her stories except to save face with Jenny and her husband only to ruin a politician who really wasn't so bad. Tania leaves her sculpture lover because deep down he doesn't really need her. Kate marries an actor keeps her journalism alive. They have a falling out and she makes a brash decision. Through the series all three women maintain a friendship with Rob a man they met at Berkley. He's a Korean War veteran making his way back to life. I thought he was the coolest charachter in the show level headed,, non judgemental. They all end up at a commune in the early seventies, at robs ranch. They have lots of work to do helping on a ranch. Jenny came out earlier makes a decision to be a doctor divorced joe and raises their son. At the end Rob dies after putting off surgery.
They all gather at the end and make peace with their past and move on to the future.
I experienced the sixties mostly through the music and the news. I formed some radical opinions myself!
Bonanza: The Pursued: Part 2 (1966)
Sheepaples
I saw this episode when I was in the 6th grade it affected me same as it does now. Just because someone is different doesn't mean they are the "off" ones. I can't believe those town people would be so hateful and mean spirited. That stupid woman wife of the shop keeper I've seen her in other parts, same ignorance. Her husband wouldn't give credit to Heber but to the other nothing more than an abusive bully who disrespects women only to get shot, owing the stupid shopkeeper money he will never receive!!ha is that poetic justice? That preacher was a kook and accepted money from an evil man named Carbo. He's determined to grab Susannah from Heber who has 2 wives elizabeth anne is the 2nd wife. I can't tell you which one is worse Carbo or the preacher both are equally off balance. To accuse elizabeth anne of sin and the baby as an abomination is unthinkable. Lacking compassion and tolerance. Beehive Nevada what a good name for that nest of wasps. I can't get over the town people but they have major s...disturbed 2 of them. I know of situations where any one or group of people can start talking doesnt matter the truth people follow cheap talk some more than others. The cartwright ever the decent well rounded monthly are help the family. That preacher keeps stirring the pot. Those two women ladiesbesides beautiful and intelligent they are two tough, resilent ladies. Driving the wagon at full gallop! Camping out in the dessert and still managing to smile and make clothes for the baby. I remember wondering why elizabeth anne wasn't laying down in the wagon? My mom and oldest sister replied, "she's much better off hanging onto the seat!" She was. It ends so sadly when Carbo shoots Heber in the back and grabs Susannah pushes elizabeth anne down or maybe he was being careful. Ben and the sons show up and settle it. That d... preacher kept onhoundi g those grieving women, no decency leave them alone in their grief. Then starts explaining his motives. Elizabeth anne gives birth to their son and dies shortly afterward. She was frail anyway spiritually even more so after conditions of birthing. I'm so glad men finally left telling preacher he's so sickening. Carbo finally sets preacher straight on his intentions money. Too late to stop this monster. To want something so greatly and will stop at nothing to get it.
Igotry goes far in this episode. After elizaberh anne gives birth she dies. Leaving Susannah alone with their son. I was deeply moved by the elderly minister and his wife asking Susannah and so to live with them for as long as she wishes. I was crying my eyes out by that time.
The Twilight Zone: Caesar and Me (1964)
SUSAN!!!
After viewing this episode several times throughout the years there's so much more than what is presented. The lighting and the shadows gives it a creepy presence we can't see but certainly can feel. Agnes Cudahy is his understanding landlady. Susan the little girl is her niece. Jonathan talks to caesar telling he'd never leave him like the other guy (the shame of it all abandoning you for some woman") I think he heard his mother say it his whole life. Then caesar tells him to quit kidding himself he's finished. I think Susan resents her aunts affections to Jonathan not her. Ever. Jonathan has no skills at all no wit for a ventriloquist. Caesar is verbally abusive to him. Then again he is
"Dimwitted" Susan hears him talking with caesar. He tries ago at the employment office. No skills of any sort, he's not a citizen either. I don't think he ever saw a file cabinet just how hesite he is then watching it as its closed. No job Susan berated him and pokes fun at him. Caesar talks him into robbery. He succeeds and pays rent and has food. Jonathan doesn't want much in life unlike caesar. What really gets creepy is the way caesar eyeballs Susan while she's in Jonathan's room. Now there's a smart lid. So when he gets back to his room he catches Susan coming out shocked. Jonathan sees a smashed cigar and frets caesar"sit down!!!" Just like a gangster type film. Jonathan always does as hes told. He then gets talked into big robbery , seeing him chewing on his fingers and the way he acts is childish. Caesar wanted him to get caught that's why the timing. Night watchman sees him I guess he didn't know enough to wait. Susan then hears him talking again. Aunt reads paper about robbery creepy how Susan looks at her. Calls ythe police, that state by the phone reminded me of Susan the girl is reading leaning on her hand but that could be Susan how she felt inside. Her aunt did not like the idea of having her around. Jonathan in his room which looked like more of a storage room. He's actually drinking I think he was repeating another line of his mother. Caesar pokes at him. Anyway cops are at the door. Jonathan's provaricates his answers "ohhhh that nightclub" tries to get caesar to help him to explain. The way he kept fondling that puppets face was creepy. Pleading with him to help Jim I'm not a thief. Susan comes in to watch her aunt and police. Holding caesar to his chest that must have been his mom did regular basis. No help from him. The cops take him away. They all leave except Susan who gets called by caesar. He tells her she's hip and likes her. He tells her he'll take her to new york, and get rid of her aunt by using this poison dart gu. That's right! She was a brat but I give her a little space. Jonathan was to dennse to figure anything out. Unbelievable. I do like this show creepy as it was was one of the better. Un.
Bonanza: The Dark Gate (1961)
Undone
This is so dang 😔 😔sad I grew up watching bonanza and James coburn to present. I loved the tv show and mr. Coburn exactly. Never dissapointed. This show is so tragic. Mental illness has claimed more lives than any other disease (to be safe my opinion) there is help out there many lives have been spared. Sadly many missed due to multitude of reasons. Ross and Adam are long time friends as wife delphine. Ross' demeanor has changed significally over a years time noticed by Adam everytime he visits. Ross starts abusing his wife accusing her and Adam of trysts. Not. His jumbled mind starts illegal activities hiring undesirables. Actually the leader had principles not wanting violence unless .... Ross lost all his. I was glad Adam took her to the ponderosa! More tragic events where Ross abuses delphine, tears the place up and Adam finds her as she dies. Jesus. Ross goes on a killing spree ending his misery. For a moment we see Ross as the man he was. He lost time from his anniversary to his death ten months.
I'm so glad there is treatment out there. Still judgemental a.h.s (spelling?) Throw cheap shots and accusatory invective. I don't think it was due to any std I believe paranoid schizophrenia. One more thought dementia? Everso possible even in our young years.
Angel on My Shoulder (1980)
Awful
This remake is no match for the 46 version. It's embarrassing. Kagel was a gangster be it muni or strauss. Richard kiley however was great. He always was a great actor. I mostly dispise this film because the acting is so overblown. Kagel is so absolutely ignorant besides evil. This time he was innocent of a crime he received capital punishment for. His ignorance and uncooperative attitude one would think and be of utmost concern and do something about it. Start wondering if an imposter is in the midst (mission impossible)and get a doctor. To see such a difference. Paul muni and claude rains now there were two actors. Peter strauss has played many roles with distinction. I can't stand him in this. Barbara Hershey, men as many films. I rememberher as the hippie princess she's had good roles. Hoosiers was my favorite.
Hawaii Five-O: Once Upon a Time: Part 2 (1969)
What a mother wouldn't do
These quacks, charlatans "they prey on the meek, the old and the weak" this dr. Fremont preys on this grieving young mother love for her child. The cruelty is immeasurable! (I do feel herbal remedies, plants they can help to a point, and are used in making medications but only scientists have the knowledge)
Steve tries to tell his sister Mary Anne about Fremont and her chicanery to no avail tom her husband can't convince her either. The baby has an incurable stomach cancer no hope so mom takes him to this quack with her fancy light show machinery and moms life changed. The father gets Steve to visit L. A. to try to talk sense to maryanne to no avail. Fremont is so charismatic and sultry she tries to take Steve in he don't. I saw her patients, some of them appeared to be less enlightened. Steve stated to sister that most were not sick in the first place (or hypochondriacs) which too is tragic when seeking medical care. They'll turn to these healers. I was just a girl when I saw this episode and it was the subject that buzzed through the school! I never forgot it. I think it's the best episode. The dramatic ending sent great closure to the episode. All those people were convinced she was a Saint she never cared or helped anybody. Steve's blood sample told quite a diagnosis of impending doom. Then he wrote a note about his health giving to the judge . He read it to the court chaos ensued with gavel pounding about the vegetable oil. His sister runs to him and hugs.
One must be careful I read was told about medical mishaps nature treatments instead of physicians.
Days of Heaven (1978)
Ocular poetry
Richard Gere, Bill is not a good person, Brooke adams, Abby is not much different does have some redeeming qualities. Linda manz as Linda is fresh air with sunshine added.
Starts out bill working in a steel mill abby outside job Linda makes flowers. Bill gets in trouble kills his boss (a real jerk ass) anyway off and running they hop a train to Texas panhandle to reap the wheat. Sam shepard is the farmer no name mentioned. Wealthy fair and decent. Bill continues to cause trouble then overhears Sam is dying then concoct his plan. Marry Abby off to the farmer, he'll die, she will be rich, rich and very wealthy! Oh! All the possibilities. The foreman played by veteran actor Robert Wilke (he played the part so well! Great actor played a fatherly figure to sam) he was suspicious of those two from the beginning. "I think they're a pair of con artists" listen to your father Sam he's right. Abby marries the farmer. His world is a lonely one Linda really likes him and appreciates all what he has done is doing to improve their lives. The foreman gets told to leave for the further end of the farm. He certainly informs Bill he's wise to their schemes. That expression in his eyes was enough to warn anybody with sense to watch out! Bill ever the smart wise ass rebuffs him. Sam is not completely naive he sees Bill and Abby who are supposed to be siblings act out more than normal. Linda stays the same just works and keeps up her cheerful self. Her narration adds to the film she is young innocent and wise. Very patient and tolerant of others including that numbdense friend of hers. Anyway a flying circus comes to the place alas an expression of joy and glee hits Bill. He takes off after Sam and Abby latest confrontation. He leaves with them. A new season of planting begins. The cinematography was mesmerizing as breathtaking,Watching the wheat sprout up and out of ground. The sunsets sunrises the natural lighting makes that place on the edge of forever. Anyway bad pennies always return Bill and Abby talk she makes it clear she loves her husband and wants to stay with him. Well Sam sees them caressing outside even though it was goodbye uh oh! Locusts show up and downhill it goes Bill out in the field offers farmer some help he goes ballistic on Bill with a lantern rampant fire ensues and everyone is trying to Douce the fire. The soundtrack pounding ones senses as the huge tractors rolling, rolling into the inferno people running rampantly (I will back up a bit Sam tied up his wife after heartedly arguing with her about her "brother") the next morning we see Bill out in the charred field working g on his fancy motorbike. The farmer rides out looking for him. Pulls out a gun starts coming at Bill, Bill then stabs farmer. He didn't have it in him to kill, Bill did. It could be seen as self defense. I felt saddened sa,m was killed. Bill takes off 🙄 running as always. Packs up Abby and little sister off they drive. Somehow get a steam engine boat and cruise the river. Traded car and jewelry. The foreman finds Sam in the field the expression of agony and grief were heart rendering. He loved him like a son. Takes with the law to find them. Asked the man they got the boat if they saw Abby. Anyway the trio continue their escape and then land and hide away. Linda stating about Abby not caring about happiness. She wanted to right wrongs she did. The law sees Bill on the river Bank he starts running they shoot him. I didn't feel any sadness for him, he was a selfish, conceited son. I felt for Abby she loved him first and Linda. At the end Linda goes to a girl's boarding school Abby leaves for the train. Unfortunately that dense friend sees Abby and finds Linda. They take off. One major reason I didn't like that girl is what she said about the young so
ldier who loved her,"maybe he'll get killed or something"ugh!! She's just as awful as Bill. Anyway the girls take to the tracks.
The Waltons: The Fire Storm (1976)
Let there be light
That minister should be kicked out of the church. It was not his place to shame, humiliate and demean in front of everyone in a place of worship. I didn't think there were so many ignorant people up on that mountain (in the show ). It doesn't take much to fuel the fire Thorndike certainly did. 😳 all john boy was trying to do was inform people of what is going on around the globe not just happenings on waltons mountain one event Erin's beauty contest. I never cared much for her anyway but she certainly is miss shallow contestant of waltons mountain.
John boys newspaper article of mein kampf is making him unpopular and center of hostility, his family also. The best part is grandpa helping Erin get entered in the beauty contest. He sure knew how to pull shenanigans! Mrs. Bremer visited John boy at the paper telling him how hard life was for her and family because her being german. Fear, there were those who were hostile and oh so very ignorant. Obscurantanism, the refusal to spread knowledge and education.
After her royal high... loses the contest of ourselves it's all John boys fault and his Hitler articles. Whiny and vain that's pretty much Erin's charachter. Reverend comes up with a brilliant idea to have a book burning to help calm it all down. The trouble maker guy did the same thing on little house, had a whole bunch of "trash" esp. Mei n kampf will burn. John boy stops that I love his impassioned speeches he tells Erin off and the crowd. Burning books here are no different than Germany. He picks up a random book can't read German, then mrs. Bremer takes the book and begins to read, neighbors all looking at each other puzzled. She then translates "in the beginning god created the heavens and the earth, by that time his mamas in tears (me and carol too) burning a German bible!! The reverend didn't know whT to say, except the bible and mein kampf belong in good hands.
We most certainly miss out on a great many things by wanting g to stick our head in to the sand 😀 and pretend all is grand.
Bonanza: Stallion (1972)
You gotta work for what you want/need
I found this episode most disturbing. Billybrenner a shiftless good for what with errors in thinking. A belligerent, abusive bully to his wife 😔 and his son idolized him to the point where he believes in his father has it so hard. The son Tommy was a good kid, and his poor mother Alice I can't believe Tommy didn't once witness his father abusing his mother.
Billy after all is the man. He has to wear his gun on his hip around his family because he's a man. He's lazy therefore no food except fastback and greens with sunflower seeds. I don't agree with one reviewer criticizing ben for nothiring him due to enough help. Billy only asked due to his plan to steal the stallion. "A conductor!yeah I. Can do that" his terms easy work. Which he would most likely be dismissed. Railroad and coal mining due to prejudice of men from different walks of life for the first and "I can't work down in hole" it's a job as ben put it. Alice presses Billy more about work their son needs proper nutrition he's growing fast. Billy again hurts and threatens her. He won't sell his horse he'd sell her wedding ring first so she takes it off gives it to him. His family's in rags no decent food no home except for this miners cabin. It was hard to watch. Him scheming to steal the horse and sell it to farm that's a laugh farming is hard work, that's one thing Billy won't do or stick to. Nobody's gonna te.l me what to do. He does not want his son to see him, who he really is.
He steals the horse running it mercilessly, Alice suspects foul play and finds out Billy stole it. Well Joe and he gets in a gun battle the son grabs shotgun to help his PA and gets shot. Joe takes off over the mountain to get help for the boy he took a liking to. Billy peaking over side of door, he's a horse thief. Finally Alice has it with that lazy petulent child she's tethered too and tells him off. Of course it wasn't billys fault it was cartwright. I loved her more when she refereed to him as faultless Billy Brenner. "They stole the horse, it's their fault you can't get a job, it's someone else's fault you can't keep the job you get!" No decency, no honor, and no love" Alice you're the best! Joe and doc arrive he saves booy. The doctor tells him he needs good food to get better not greens and fat back! Billy apologizes to Joe. He wasn't interested tells Brenner it's all words!and to tell his family maybe they'd forgive "I dont" why should he Alice pleas Joe not to arrest him for horse stealing which was a grave offense. He spared him for the boys sake. Well, Billy appeared penitent. As he addressed him as mr. Cartwright I hope so. He needed to grow up.
This episode made me sad and angry all at once. Clu guliger gave a stellar performance! We do need to work to get even the most basic of our existance.
Places in the Heart (1984)
Always a place in my heart
I saw this film multitude of times and I tear up at the powerful ending everytime.
Sally field is such a modern marvel when it comes to art of acting! Starting as a wife and mother and at the end an accomplished cotton farmer. Of course with a great deal of help from friends she pulled it off. Her husband, a good man also sheriff gets killed off by a shooting accident (which could have been prevented by telling the kid to put the gun down) how our lives can change with a breath! Leaving his family 😔 alone and as good as destitute. He being a law enforcement officer should have had life insurance. People show up at her home to help out and console her and her children frank and possum. Sister Margaret shows up with her daughter. Ugly scene when a bunch of men show in trucks honking horns dragging that poor young colored boy who shot the sheriff tied up dead being dragged jesus was that to give the family consolation? Margaret chases them away. We shift to a scene with Wayne Margaret's weak moon eyed philandering husband with the school mark. These two finally show up. (Some wondered why the affair?) I thought to round out the film after all it is a community and there are always goings on. Loving sisters 💓. I didn't feel this to do was a distraction, not all is as it seems.moses shows up at the door asking for work, Margaret snubs him tells him to shoo, Edna enquires and agrees to feed him. Sis looks at her chagrined. Mose steals from her maybe Margaret being right. Anyway getscaught tells Edna about cotton farming and they're off ! She makes it clear never steal from her again. The banker of course calls her ignorant to for listening to a no account. That infuriates her she tells him plainly she's not he teaches her how to write a check. Simmons farm and feed proprietor (kkk upholder) tries to cheat her on price, moses sets it right? Mr. Will a blind ww1 veteran and brother in law of banker encourages Edna to take in a border to help her and to prove to the bank she's taking steps to help her situation with this payment her husband had from a loan. At first will is not happy with circumstances and is bitter just wanted to be left alone. Frank and possum sneak in his room and end up ruining a record. He storms in gthe kitchen accusing the kids of wild hooligans. Edna argues on their behalf . He then realizes she's in the tub. Change of attitudes from now on. He cont. Caning furniture and making brooms getting to know them. Edna and moses plow and really work at it. The scenes from the register are soooo authentic I still am startled everytime? I'm so glad frank ran home. Mr will remembers possum upstairs and finds his way up to her room and keeps feeling for her. She takes his hand so glad oh Mr will Mr will? Helping him downstairs and out to the shelter. What a scene. Wayne runs to protect his family openi g windows. (Viola broke up with him, finally the eye expressions of her gave me mixed messages star gazing. He was such a creep) why wasn't he helping Edna and moses??? Lazy. To sum it all Edna and moses pulled it off obstacles always but with help from people moz found they made the deadline and got the money e xtra. As always simmons again tried to cheat her, as she leaves she sees the pictures of first bale and how proud his father always was, outfits him by telling him she'll go to Mr. Wrght who would be happy to meet her price so he could show off at the masons next year. Simmons meets her price. This helped her through her grief and what an accomplishment! The kkk swoop in on mozes as always Mr will was damn good shot by hearing! Then Edna hears of it I wishhe didn't have to leave but what choice. She told him he got the first bale!)
The ending, I feel the message was what was going on I. The film the passage is beautiful and speaks through all of us Margaret forgave Wayne wow that was tear making. And the bread and wine more people show up than who were there! And w I th royce and wiley sitting beside each other peace of God. This was based on stories the director was told growing up in texas. I love it.
God Bless the Child (1988)
An unpopular opinion
I have empathy for this family I want to make that clear. I felt she made some unwise choices and perhaps an irresponsible action or two, allow me to illuminate. 1. She wants a better life for her daughter hillary and should have taken her paycheck and got on board the bus and went home to her mother. At least mom had a roof and would be thrilled to have her little granddaughter there. Theresa could get assistance and look for work. 2. She decides staying at a shelter is better. 3. She had a job she decides to take off early to look for an apartment boss found out and fired her. That is usually what happens when one doesn't ask the boss first. There are some bosses who are a.h s though. Anyway calvin is a good man and a social worker and helps them out. She does love her daughter greatly and wants better for her. Calvin finds a place for her and she moves in happy to have a home all seems well until the rats show up ( what did she expect?!) Yes I agree nobody should have to live in such deplorable conditions. At least she was off the street out of the winter weather. Irresponsible choice to call the county instead of asking for a bunch of traps. He evicts her. She tells him that he just couldn't do that and that he had to give her sixty days!! I was chagrined at that statement look where she was. Hilary becomes ill and requires hospitalization. It is then when she witnesses a violent crime she makes the heartbreaking decision to relinquish her child. I was a young mother at that time of this film I looked at my babies and wondered how could I ever?? She hadn't much of a choice. She visits Hilary at the pediatric ward watching her happy little girl painting a picture of her and the staff when she breaks the news to her about going back to the shelter. Hilary said she didn't want to go she had her own bed and everybody was nice to her (she lived a the same hard rock road as her mother. As it ends the ladies are at the park when calvin shows up picks up Hillary and takes away crying for mom as mom is too. It was a wise choice but the worst one Theresa had to make. To end the life of poverty as she did and the women before her. She loved her enough to let her go. I hoped good things for her the first time I saw this I continue to so. This is a work of fictional characters but the homeless situation is not and sadly will always be among us. NJ.
Gunsmoke: Susan Was Evil (1973)
Susan was a frustrated young woman
Susan was selfish and complained incessantly but......she was miserable living in that desolate place, no peers just her aunt, the handy man, and the stage coach passagers. I agree with other comments was she evil!? Not evil just thinking of herself always. Still.......how would I feel? Most likely the same. Her aunt busy as she was didn't treat susan right I don't think. Breaking her word promising or something like it that she'd be going to st. Louis, didn't happen. Suddenly! Art Boswell major crooked man shot at matt(that alone is worth six years) aunt falls head over heels in a space of three days. She still talks down to Susan and doesn't understand why she should be so against art ( good grief!) The handyman stated he'd help Susan but she rebuffed him rudley, extreem. Sure dude was grizzled in appearance but was a man of honor. So that was shot down for help. Still I can't help but feel sad for her I understand feeling trapped with no key in sight knowing there is life out there wanting to be a part of it but can't. Keep on existing in the wind and dirt. No her aunt wasn't fair at all. Susan raises quite a raucous when two other trouble makers show up. Money or bribes offered but no cigar. The criminal, art wants aunt Nellie and likewise, Susan couldn't thwart it. Marshall dillon always the steady eddie in every show gets everybody on the stage. Susan will not go. She stays. I watch her closely as she walks towards the house. Her expression is "OMG!!! I'm all alone here!!! Until the next crew comes in and takes over in a few days. She may have also realized a thing or two. I hope she got out of there!
Little House on the Prairie: A Matter of Faith (1976)
No iodine!!!!????
This was one of my favorite episodes. Caroline shines in this one (not to mention her infected limb). It all starts out like most episodes, upbeat, happy and an unclouded day until she scrapes her lower leg, then all hell comes to pay its respects! Charles and all his daughters leave for wherever and take jack the dog leaving Caroline alone to bake pies. It is odd she didn't apply iodine or peroxide? Family didn't need it as much as she did. Pies, pies and more pies Caroline's toils away starts to feel warmer but keeps on.
Charles and the girls visit the pig farmer, I thought it was so sweet the way he explained to Carrie about her little piggy getting g married and having little piggies of her own.
Caroline starts reading this Bible verse if the right eye offends thee cut it out yikes!!! She is hallucinating, that is creepy with her looking at all corners of the cabin at the ceiling all we see is one eye! Creepy. What's next.
What always is needed for a little one to understand. By this time Caroline's condition worsens. She tries to put the cow back in the driven rain and passes out. Awakens manages to get inside, starts hot packs. ( what struck me odd is all those pies out on the pantry the wind would have blown the rain in and the pies would be mush) anyway the reverend and the lady picked up the pies and left. Poor Caroline shut and locked the door and shutters because of an article of a family killed in their home (I think that's it) she breaks a window with a rolling pin that was good, women are resourceful always and plowed the back 40. Their cow helps herself to neighbors flowergarden upsetting the farmer. The son was compassionate and understanding wanting to bring the cow back to the Ingalls the father "no" get the bucket the milk will make your ma feel better about her flower bed. When reverend alden and mrs. Foster show up the Ingalls are having a splashing good time when he tells them Caroline wasn't there everything was locked up. Charles concerned with Caroline gone and not leaving a note gets him going, takes off leaving the girls and Jack with the two. Charles gets flagged down by the farmer and cuts in without fail telling Charles about his cow. No Caroline didn't come together it or why would I still have it? Charles takes off leaving the p.o.ed farmer. That stuntman driving the backboard belonged on ben hur. He finds Caroline un responsive on floor. Next scene doc baker at Caroline's side Charles and girls praying outside. Reverend Allen rocking Carrie praying inside. Charles and the girls are sitting by the bedside when she wakes smiling at her family they too are smiling gratefully in kind. Doc and reverend marveled at what happened and how Caroline knew exactly when to Lance it saving her life. God had something g to do with it. Faith. Y.
Bonanza: The Strange One (1965)
Just because somebody's different
Which is more captivating the story or Mari, the strange one. I saw this when it first aired I loved it then still do. People can be so dangerous when afraid of anything different. I guess those wagon train people lacked a bible or forgot its teachings about gifts of the holy spirit. The gift of prophecy the gift of the discerning of spirits
Great acting. Loose sorrel is so beautiful those fawns eyes and delicate beauty. In those days little was known or understood about clairvoyants. So the settlers weren't quite so wrong, but still. Her own parents turned against her. It takes Ben to straighten it out and help those to understand. One of the reasons why I have always loved this show. Another, to see mendecent hard working , principled, mannered and possess a fighting spirit to believe and do what they feel is right.
She's Too Young (2004)
Not so bad
Forward to the past. I'm a sextugenarian. In other words I'm in my sixties. A co worker once told me I'm sixty now, I said "the sexy sixties?" She complimented me profusely.
Anyway, when I was a teenager VD!was the big fear. "the dirty toilet seat!" watch out for that it'll getcha everytime!" That old program is still in syndication? At school we had lectures or spokes people on the subject free to ask any question it was helpful and education. No! You do not get vd from the toilet seat. (although there other concerns with that) I was into all of the teaching I felt more at ease to talk to others regarding this disease. Ignorance is not bliss. For anything.
The Waltons: The Scholar (1973)
Literacy
There were several characters on this show were my least favorite. Verdie, elizabeth, Erin and a few others. Verdie wants to learn to read and asks johnboy to teach her, of course he obliges. Erin hides her tonsillitis from her mother and grandma most valiantly. ❤ did need surgery. While recovering verdie helps 😌 the family while the women folk are away with her bedside care. Johnboy teaches verdie while helping Elizabeth with her reading and writing. All goes well until elizabeth innocently tells the teacher, miss hunter about her brother teaching verdie reading. Verdie arrives at the school with garments she made for miss hunter when she starts in how proud she was of verdie and so wanted to be the one to open the door for her. I thought that was an extremely condescending remark and attitude. Signs of the times? Perhaps but belittling just the same. Verdie understandably exits feeling humiliated. Teacher calls after her clueless of course (inadvertently rude) verdie feels all are laughing at her and tells johnboy she wants nothing more to do with him or his lessons. This kid can't get a word in other wise. Her sister tries to reason with verdie that johnboy and family. Deaf ears.
Erin continues to "recover" her mother asks how she feels, Erin tells her I'm still sick. Then she's told a boy stopped by wanting to know if she'd like to go to a dance of course Erin makes a speedy recovery!!! I love how her mother handled it telling her she can't have her cake and eat it too. No matter how Erin apologizes her mother was adament Erin reluctantly puts on her robe to get up and recover. Johnboy gets thru to verdie about the misunderstanding and restart the lessons. The day comes when she begins her journey to her daughters college graduation ceremony. 💓 . The south had colored bus services, there was a man sitting a bit further up. This was a good one.
When I said the three plus others weren't my faves verdie was a bit of a drama queen as elizabeth and Erin. She was a bit stubborn prideful. In a later episode her daughter was coming home due to marital problems. She was talking to her stepson about literacy and his frustration about not having any new subjects to learn. She said to be grateful you have learning young instead of having to learn at my age. Apparently her children all five offered to help her with literacy. She came up with every excuse I'm tired, I'm busy with whatever to accept their loving help. I felt that's what was more the situation.
