FLCL (2000)
An essential.
I haven't considered myself an anime fan, but FLCL sealed the deal for me. I've been very impressed with Bebop in the past, enough to own the dvds and have watched them repeatedly, but I never imagined another anime would have the same effect. FLCL stands out for so many reasons, first of all there's the awesome Pillows soundtrack, which could make anyone a j-pop fan. Then there's great characters that change so much throughout the series, however never lose their core personalities. Then, there's the outrageous craziness that dominates every facet of it.
Since not many of the other comments try to explain the story (not that I blame them) I'll try to relate a hopefully short synopsis. Naota is a boy living in the somewhat small town of Mabase. It's a pretty normal town....unless if you consider the huge factory shaped like a steam iron atop a nearby hillside. Naota lives a pretty uneventful and boring life until the day he's blindsided by a speeding vespa, then promptly struck in the head with a bass guitar by a strange woman named Haruko. Afterward Naota tries to go about his normal life again, but things keep popping up.....out of his head.....literally. If he isn't sprouting horns, ears, or other oddities out of his head, he's being stalked by Haruko for unknown reasons.
What has most impressed me about this short series is it never proves to be predictable or passe, it's fresh and original, and lovable.
Frank McKlusky, C.I. (2002)
Well...I thought it was funny! =)
I'm surprised so many reviews trash this film so much, because honestly despite it's obvious flaws and unoriginality (this film rips on Dumb and Dumber and Ace Ventura like no other). Honestly though, I think if you liked either of those films, you can enjoy many parts of this one. The list of stars making cameos in this film are numerous and sometimes save the scene (eg. Tracy Morgan as a bogus claim con). Sadly many jokes in the film fall flat on their face, and when they do, it's like hitting a brick wall. To compound this so much of the film is a direct ripoff of Ace Ventura, such as the numerous disguises the McKlusky uses. His character is also too similar to Jim Carrey's Dumb and Dumber character, which doesn't help. Overall I think the film is worth watching, but don't be prepared for greatness.
