Red Heat (1988)
The best depiction of USSR of its time
I first saw this movie in 1990 in the Soviet Union (I was born and grew up there). Prior to watching this movie I had seen other cinematic depictions of "Russians" or "Soviets" by Hollywood: mostly, villains on horses with big red stars on their hats, wearing ancient uniforms (of 1920's) and armed with spears. It was laughable! Red Heat was altogether different in its depiction of the Russian culture - quite a bit more realistic. Of course, some scenes were just fictional inventions (like the opening scene in the baths), but the overall impression was very close to reality. I love this movie, and have watched it dozens of times and watch it regularly to this day. I would also like to point out a mistake in one of the descriptions on this site: To my knowledge the permit to film the Red Square scene(s) was denied, so the crew had to "sneak-film" it. They dressed Arnold up in the uniform and filmed him as though making an amateur/home movie with just a couple of crew people present.
Around the World in Eighty Days (1972)
The greatest animated TV series ever!
This adaptation of the great work by Jules Verne is light, smooth, comical, yet contains important life lessons for children and families. The show is funny, and its attitude is optimistic. It is just an adaptation, yet it remains fairly faithful to the classic work of Jules Verne. This show will please everyone: animated movie lovers, fans of Jules Verne, children, teenagers, and adults.
I became fascinated with this television series as a child. I could not wait till the next episode, and this fascination is still within me, even though now I am an adult and a medical doctor by profession (movie lover in heart).
Great family entertainment. I simply love it!
