Candyman (2021)
Best Horror movie I've watched
Probably the best horror movie I've seen. Cinematography and music work perfectly especially in Dolby Theater. Very intense throughout, wild emotional hook. Most people don't dare to say Candyman 5 times in front of mirror after this movie. Great directing. It talks about BLM in a very subtle way. Magical movie.
Jungle Cruise (2021)
Standard Popcorn movie, nice production and casting
Lighthearted and easy to watch. Doesn't really create the real suspense. You already know what's gonna happen and the good guys will win. Stereotypical Hollywood popcorn movie. But the scene and action are nice. Rock and Emily Blunt have good chemistry. Overall not bad.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
High end Marvel production but lack real "bad guy"
Nice start for Asian power in mainstream US- very first superhero. The movie has really nice cinematography and choreography. The fight scenes were excellent. Director really knows how to create a suspense- already marvel standard now. The problem with this movie is that everybody important is good person. There is no bad person in this movie, so there's not enough conflict. At the end, they have to come up with a dragon out of nowhere to be the big boss which doesn't quite make sense. By the way, Liang Chaowei is really fashionable and young looking in this movie, great for people in his 60s. Liu Simu delivered a good performance.
The Card Counter (2021)
All the suspense and buildup that leads nowhere
Too depressing without getting anywhere. Using music and all the scenes to create the dark and ruthless vibe, without actually letting the emotions to go places. 95% of the time it's too plain for my taste. It does discuss some deeper issue, like torturing, interrogating, revenge, PTSD, etc. It has a real tragic ending. Not a bad movie, not far from being good. Just the plot way too empty.
