The Boogeyman (I) (2023)

I really wanted to like this movie.

I understand a director, trying to make a impactful story, but in this case, the entire plot was an inch deep and a mile long. There just wasn't enough cohesiveness or character development to make me want to know more about these characters. There was very little backstory, and what little there was, didn't always make sense. I would have rather the story build up before being thrown directly into a strange situation. As far as as horror goes, I understand that many of the scenes are a metaphor for loss, and dealing with the death of a family member, but it almost seemed like I was watching two separate movies. Overall, this is a movie that can be watched at home on television, but I'd avoid spending the money to go to the theater.

A strong 6 in hope for a better 2nd season.

Man did I really want this to be good. Netflix is often light on providing well written, spooky stories. With GDT's name associated with this series I expect legendary tales. Instead, the stories were fairly weak with over the top acting. I especially found Pickman's Model to be one of the worst in that regard; with the characters changing accents every five minutes. The second episode was one of the best and episode 4 had potential if it would have gone in a different direction.

Overall, I ended up giving this 6 stars for the setting and overall feel. Hopefully, Netflix will bring this back next year learning from its mistakes.

Devil in Ohio (2022)

Ugh. You sure this wasn't a parody?

Warning: Spoilers
I had great hopes for this series and it started off fairly decent. However, by the end the only person I was rooting for was Mae the devil girl herself. In between failed business dealings for the dad, a sister who questioned her sexual identity, a mom with step-dad issues, and a 90210 high school popularity contest, the writers managed to fit in a few things about a cult. It's like the director forgot midway through that this was supposed to be scary. If you doubt me, go to the last 20 minutes of the last episode and listen to the exceedingly long counseling session. I guarantee if you don't fall asleep, you'll need therapy yourself.

Much better than the first season
5 September 2022
The first season of this series was awful. However, the second season, with the exception of a few of the stories, was quite good. I wouldn't necessarily say this was scary, but the writing was suspenseful and the acting well done. I look forward to more seasons if this is renewed.

The Bloody Mary episode was one of my favorites as it took an already told story and brought it up to date. My least favorite was the last story. It really made no sense and wasn't entertaining at all. Started off good, but went downhill fast. So much more could have been done to develop the mortician's character and connection with the dead.

Slow at first, but well worth the watch

Very well written and acted out series. Very thought provoking and relatable in many ways. Would love to see a second season and see Monika help another lost soul.

I gave it a chance, but so slow!

Warning: Spoilers
In four episodes I've seen an alien twice. In all that other time I've learned about a lesbian relationship, an English youngster with epilepsy, a sherif dealing with getting older, a soldier getting a divorce, and a middle eastern family who has a cheating husband. Despite the world falling apart around them, all these characters appear more concerned with their personal lives than death. It's like saying to the aliens, hold off a bit while I take care of more pressing matters. Not only are these characters transparent, but filled with stereotypes galore.
