Call the Midwife (2012)
Still great but changing for the worse over time
While I love this show and for me it is one of the better ones being shown nowadays, I feel it has become too sanitised over the last few series. The earlier series which were closely based on the original books were more gritty and true to life.
I also believe that it has been taken over by the need to express the opinions and attitudes of todays society rather than depicting the beliefs of society in general back in the 50s and 60s, for example the reaction of the nuns to the decriminalisation of homosexuality and abortion. OK, I am not a nun or even a Catholic so I could be wrong, but I find it had to accept that the nuns of the day would be openly supportive despite what they may believe personally.
If you want a true picture of what being a midwife in Poplar was like back then, read the books which are even more true to life and quite shocking in parts.
Call the Midwife: Christmas Special (2020)
Not up to usual standard
I found this Christmas special dragged in places and I didn't enjoy it as much as previous ones. Seemed rather forced at times and starting to get a little bit too sentimental for me. Still one of the better shows on television and always worth a watch.
RFDS (2021)
No too bad
I watched this as I enjoy any series set in Australia. The only thing that really spoilt it for me was the acting. Absolutely no chemistry between the two main romantic leads which made their interactions cringeworthy and uncomfortable. Will keep watching in the hope it gets better.
The Larkins (2021)
Tried to enjoy it for what it was but.......
I really wanted to like this as I like Bradley Walsh and am a big fan of "The Darling Buds of May" but sadly I have to agree with the sentiments of all the other reviewers.
I tried not to compare it to the classic original adaption but Philip Franks will always be Charley Charlton to me. I just can't get past Charley being of a different ethnicity. Sadly it spoilt the whole thing for me.
The Good Karma Hospital (2017)
A bit of much needed escapism
I have just started season 3. I watch it more for the colour and scenery than the plot. A little too much of a soap opera for me. I am disappointed by the zero romantic chemistry between Ruby and Gabriel. Ruby is great and seems to be trying her hardest but I keep expecting more from Gabriel and am just not getting it. Is he really a such a wooden actor or are we awaiting hidden depths be exposed? Contrary to other reviews I love Amanda Redman's character. She has to be tough and no nonsense to survive and run a hospital. I feel because of her faults she comes across as one of the more believable actors.
Stepmom (1998)
Ups and downs but overall good
My first time watching this movie and enjoyed it on the whole. As others have mentioned the main characters are selfish and self-absorbed but this made it real for me and I can imagine feeling the same as Susan Sarandon's character if the same thing happened to me. I found it very similar to the ITV 2005 Movie "Walk away and I Stumble" which I found far superior. Check it out if you get the chance.
