Bride & Prejudice (2004)
Cheesy but nice
I just finished watching this movie and, despite an initial thought of "What have I done to be seeing this?", I ended up loving it. It is shocking to see people talk and the next second start singing and dancing. However, the main line of the plot in Jane Austen's novel was kept and the script came to fit Indian as well as Western cultures pretty well. There is only one thing I could not understand: why they did not show any kiss (maybe Indian movies do not allow it...) and instead they replaced it with hugging and a soft kiss on the forehead. Nevertheless, the end result is a funny, romantic and (literally) brilliant movie!
Mansfield Park (2007)
Not great, but OK...
I had already read some of the reviews here when I started watching this latest version of Jane Austen's novel, and I kind of expected the worst. But it wasn't quite so. Of course, Billie Piper has nothing to do with acting, singing or whatever kind of art. So I will simply say she has no chemistry with the male lead. Not even her hairstyle fits the epoch! As for Blake Ritson, that's another story. I think he was the only actor who did his job properly. The rest were OK, however... All in all, I rate this with an 8 out of 10 simply for the pure magic that the male lead managed to create. I only wish the producers had more inspiration in choosing the female lead. This version seems ruined because of the terrible miscast!
Becoming Jane (2007)
Magnificent!
I watched this movie last night and I have already watched it again twice. I think this must speak volumes about how much I have enjoyed it. Personally, I cannot find it any fault. Well, perhaps the fact that the love story doesn't go the way I wanted it to. All in all, the movie is just amazing: brilliant cast, nice scenery and costumes, lovely lines. Not to mention the leads: I had already seen James McAvoy in The Last King of Scotland and I thought he did a great job there. But watching him as Tom here really made me see passion. As for Anne Hathaway, I have always thought her smart and funny, and here she also shows her sensitive side. So, if you have the opportunity to see this movie, or if you are in the mood for something utterly romantic, don't miss the chance!
Corazón salvaje (1993)
Simply perfect
I remember the first time I came across Corazon Salvaje I was 14 and I was watching it on an Italian TV channel. I had the chance to see the amazing cast live, invited by the same TV station and I fell in love with them and the production, so that I still find myself, 14 years later, watching it over and over again. This is due exclusively to the perfect acting (by the late and amazing Eduardo Palomo as Juan del Diablo, and Edith Gonzalez, as Monica De Altamira), the perfect scenery, the perfect cinematography, the perfect soundtrack, and my list can go on forever. It is the best TV production I have ever seen, and no other soap opera can ever reach the level Corazon Salvaje has set. I am terribly sorry producers didn't get to make the sequel, as the protagonist left this world far too young. But I will watch it all my life, never feeling I have had enough. It's a must see for every romantic in this world. And I guess, there will never be another remake of it, simply because there could never be anybody able to portray Juan and Monica as Eduardo and Edith did. PERFECT IN EVERY WAY.
The Painted Veil (2006)
The Painted Veil
Amazing story, superb setting, unbelievably great performances from Edward Norton and Naomi Watts, this film has it all. It is a story about finding your true self under a mask of social impositions, a movie about forgiveness and redemption. And, most of all, it's a story that shows how love and eliminate the distance between two people who apparently have nothing in common. It has a bit of the Shakespearean Taming of the Shrew in it, but what there is beyond appearances is splendid! It will let you want to watch it over and over again. I know I do...I would recommend this movie to everybody who believes in the magic of true feelings.
The Illusionist (2006)
The Illusionist
If you are looking for a movie that has great actors, amazing settings, a breath-taking story, wonderful costumes and photography, then you MUST see THE ILLUSIONIST. It is intriguing, shocking (in a good way) and sensational at the same time. The way colors blend into the picture really takes you back in time around the beginning of cinema...But what makes this movie brilliant is the impressive work of Edward Norton, who can go from calm to passionate, from calculate to desperate, from furious to broken to pieces, all in a glance. And the look in his eyes towards the climax of the film really stays with you. It's not just a movie about magic, it is magical!
