Horns (2013)
6/10
Great ideas get muddled
9 April 2023
Horns really brings some cool ideas to the table, and by halfway through I thought I was watching a really great movie. Unfortunately, over its runtime the story gets more and more dragged down by gratuitous sex, violence, and narrative aimlessness.

The ending of the movie in particular left a really bad taste in my mouth, as it turned against a lot of the themes I felt it was building on in favor of a big violent CGI climax, obviously designed to be more satisfying for teens and bring in a larger audience. If the film had wrapped up just 15 minutes sooner it could have scored a lot higher for me.

It's not all bad though! Horns is funny, mostly well acted, and has a wholly original premise that plays out in such a way that really draws you in and makes you want to see what happens next. If you're a fan of crime movies or dark comedies you'll probably enjoy most of the film.

6/10.
