Chernobyl (2019)
An Utter Masterpiece
I rarely give 10 stars to anything. In my mind, 10 stars are reserved for only the greatest movies and TV shows of all time. This show deserves 10 stars.
This movie is fantastic in every way possible. Acting, music, directing, story, you name it. This show does everything perfectly. What's more, its a true story. Its a story which will utterly captivate you, while giving tribute to the real historical heroes who lived through this event.
This is one of the best series I have ever seen. Its an absolute masterpiece.
Spectre (2015)
Stunning visuals, great acting, stupid writing
I feel conflicted about this movie. It has some fantastic visuals, and its really well directed. It also has some great acting. All of the actors did an excellent job.
But, I thought the story was pretty stupid at times. In particular, the ending was downright nonsensical. A series of events occur which just don't make much sense. To enjoy this movie, you need to turn off your brain.
Also, I didn't find the love story very convincing. The actress was very talented, and she had great chemistry was Daniel Craig. But, I thought the romance subplot seemed rushed and forced.
Its a real shame. You can tell that this movie was made by an extremely talented team. But, they clearly didn't hire a very good writer. This movie could have been great, if only they had been given a better script.
Dark (2017)
I Loved the 1st Season and Hated the 3rd Season
I feel really conflicted about this show. I thought the first season was fantastic. But, by the time the 3rd season ended, I felt thoroughly annoyed by this show.
Season 1 has a really interesting, unique, and well crafted plot. The story is a little complicated, but not overly so. The 1st season was a fantastic scifi mystery story. It really sucked me. After watching the 1st episode, it was difficult to drag myself away from the TV.
It was thus with high hopes that I began watching seasons 2 and 3. However, after watching them, I find myself wishing the show had been cancelled after season 1.
As time goes on, the plot gets more fantastical, unrealistic, and contrived. It also gets really complex. The show introduces a huge cast of characters, and it becomes difficult to remember who everyone is. I felt like I needed a spread sheet in order to keep track of everyone.
Ultimately though, I think this complexity was covering up a stupid plot. Throughout the show, there are coincidences, things that don't make sense, and characters who behave in absurd ways. I'm also not certain that the established rules of the show's scifi mechanic are always portrayed consistently.
Also, the show gets ham-fistedly dramatic. Many of the characters love to give big dramatic speeches, and to give long soulful stares. Towards the end of the series, I fond myself constantly rolling my eyes.
All that said, the 1st season is really good. I have a love/hate relationship with this show. I recommend that you watch the 1st season, but pretend that the 2nd and 3rd seasons don't exist.
The Irishman (2019)
Artistically Made, But Long and Boring
This movie was well directed, well acted, and very professionally made. Too bad its so boring. It has a run time of 3 and a half hours, and it feels like 5 and a half hours.
The movie is slow and meandering. There isn't really one central conflict that slowly builds to a climax. Instead, its a series of stories told by an elderly mobster about his life of crime. An hour and a half into the movie, I found myself wondering when the main conflict was going to begin. But, it never did. Its just one story after another, which ends with the protagonist as an old man, looking sadly upon his life of crime.
The movie was artistic, and paints an interesting vignette about mob life. But, I found it difficult to watch. Sorry Martin Scorsese, but this movie is just too damn long, slow, and boring.
Bad Boys (1995)
Turn Your Brain Off Before Watching This
This is a typical 90's buddy cop movie. If you like explosions and comedic banter, its a decent enough movie.
The best part of the film is the chemistry between Martin Lawrence and Will Smith. Its also fun to watch as a snapshot of the 90's. The music, clothing, and general vibe of the movie screams 90's.
Just don't think about the plot too deeply. The story is pretty stupid and doesn't make sense at times.
Dune (1984)
A Truly Terrible Movie
I created an account just to review this movie. I can't believe how bad it is.
Firstly, the acting is terrible. Most of the actors give laughably hammy performances. Also, there are also several occasions in which everyone pauses so that they can narrate the thoughts of the characters. That is such incredibly bad and lazy screenwriting.
Secondly, this movie doesn't explain anything. If you don't read the book, you will have no idea what's happening. Its a confusing string of strange unexplained events. Its almost as though the movie expects you to read the book beforehand.
Lastly, there are a number of gross out scenes. I'd really rather not watch scenes of pimples being drained. Who enjoys watching stuff like that??
At the very least, I guess it has some interesting visuals. But, that's not enough to make up for the many other shortcomings.
