Forbidden Planet (1956)
Judge no other sci-fi movies until you have seen this.
Quite simply a great film for it's time.
While the special effects may not be as good as Star Wars or any of a number of other more modern movies, you have to take it for what it is, and for the time it was made. Doing that you can't help but see how it is one of the greatest sci-fi movies ever made.
I have seen it 3 times and every time lost count of how many concepts in this movie that I have seen replicated, in some way shape or form, in sci-fi movies made subsequently.
Truly the trend-setter for all sci-fi movies that have followed.
Well worth watching and a must see for anyone who calls themselves a sci-fi fan.
Cinderella Man (2005)
Very Good Movie
Great performance by Crowe, almost as good as his performance in "A Brilliant Mind" for which he should have received the best actor Oscar.
If there is any justice in the world, he should get an Academy Award for this performance.
If nothing else a good old fashioned "against the odds" type of movie, without being boring, repetitive or corny.
Being set in the depression era, it was not too far off base with shots of the life people lived at the time, but perhaps was a bit sanitised as the version of the movie I saw was on-board an aeroplane. That being said the fact that it impressed me so much, and that I enjoyed it so much when watching it on the aeroplane makes me want to wait for it to come out on DVD so I can watch it again. Not many movies can have that influence on me.
The War of the Worlds (1953)
Good Film For Its Day
Not a Bad film has much more in common with HG Wells' original story than the modern adaptation/remake Independence Day, which has many parallels running through it.
Special effects: I did not find them that bad, again given the age
of the movie they probably could be said to be quite good.
In independence day, you could find things to laugh at or about, this movie is much more serious, and given that, just as enjoyable if not a little more engrossing.
Worth seeing at least once.
The Digitally Remastered Sound Track on CD is also quite good.
Dude, Where's My Car? (2000)
Need to be in a mood for light hearted fun.
The movie was a bit lame. However, it is worth seeing once, especially if you are in the mood for some very light hearted and sometimes silly, sometimes stupid jokes. Pleasantly surprised with the lack of swearing for a teenager targetted movie. When it started I thought, "I dont think I can sit here and watch all of this," but surprisingly I did. Parents be warned, there are some scenes that though meant to be funny, do contain homosexual and transvestite style scenes/references (no nudity) and they are meant in a comical context, but as such, May not be suitable for your younger kids.
Overall, a bit of a fun movie.
Killer Net (1998)
Kept Me Awake.
Watched it last night on late night TV. Engrossing film. Not recommended for the very squeamish. The film contains some nudity and drug use, as well as vivid violent allusions. Wasn't too bad, took me to about 30-45 minutes before the end to know who the killer was and work out everything that was going on. Which is longer than most of the movies out and about today. Some interesting twists and turns mixed with some subtle humour. Kept me from going to bed until the very end. (I just had to know if they caught the killer!)
Worth watching at least once.
A Beautiful Mind (2001)
Brilliant.
How Russell Crowe did not win the Academy Award for this film is beyond me.
After the success of Gladiator, to change "hats" and play John Nash as he did, truly shows Crowes versatility as an actor.
A movie well worth watching atleast once.
Monsters, Inc. (2001)
Bloody Brilliant!
Great Movie. Very Entertaining. Great story line and animation. Disney's best film since Fantasia?? The only shame is that the two main cartoon characters in this film can't be nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards, the Lord knows they are better than many of the over paid Hollywood Stars!
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes! (1978)
Plenty of Tomato Sauce
Many have claimed this is the worst movie of all time. I would rather sit through this 100 times than watch 10 minutes of Titanic!! To rate this movie you must watch it for the way it was intended, pure unadulterated B-Grade movie garbage. Then you will find there is only one vote to give it,... 10/10
