Constellation (2024)
Laughable scientific framework, competently directed show
Reviewers with a rudimentary understanding of physics are praising this show as genius - however, Constellation is confusing two different concepts of quantum mechanics with two very different practical outcomes: quantum entanglement and the famous copenhagen interpretation (in which matter can have different states until observed, concluding in something as the many world theory). Both concepts are interesting, but while the ladder surely makes for a good scifi-thriller, the former has literally no consequence for our realm. It's not like if person A does this, his "entangled self" would be doing B. That's not how it works... The entire premise of the show is therefore laughable from a scientific point of view.
As much as I appreciate the camerawork, the acting, the competent directing overall and the surely interesting plot generally, as well as storytelling elements, I can't help myself but think: this show is all over the place with their theoretical framework - this makes it really hard to grasp the direction in which it wants and needs to move, story-wise, and worse: it makes it really difficult to accept specific scenes that make no sense in context of the framework they are giving us.
This show takes its time to establish characters, to let us connect the dots. Suspense surely is created, but it sometimes feels a little contrived and unnecessarily slow. I wish they would reveal more much quicker, so the climax won't have to cramp it all in into few episodes...
Godless (2017)
Solid work, but not breaking any new grounds
In short: It's a slow paced, I mean a really slow paced western, that often feels like a horse documentary and doesn't always cut to the chase.
I usually like it, when the plot takes its time to establish characters, their development etc. (I am a fan of Andor f.e.) and I do like westerns - but I have to say I was bored for a very long stretch of the show. I do appreciate the protagonists, the episodes are well crafted in terms of direction, camera etc. (though I think they could have gone much more easy on the slow motion effect), but I can't help to think the approach to include as many clichee "western-moments" as possible feels forced.
This could have been a movie. Also, I genuinely don't know who the target audience is.
Invasion (2021)
Disappointing
Another example that pretty pictures don't make a good show; this series is trying its best to keep your attention by throwing mysterious nuggets framed in nice cinematography here and there, but does nothing to build actual suspense. Producers focus heavily on character development, which usually would be a good thing - If it weren't for the very one dimensional, transparent and plain pointless story streams.
