The Green Hornet (2011)
Impressive Modern Day Green Hornet
Seth Rogen as the Green Hornet, you kinda wonder that this movie is doomed. A actor known for his comic roles playing a superhero. The entire idea sounds so wrong. But after seeing the movie I have to say the idea was perfect especially since it fit perfectly for the type of script this movie had.
Imagine a superhero movie with kick ass fight scenes that makes you laugh the rest of the times, then this is the movie for you. Don't be expecting a path breaking plot or Oscar worthy acting. This movie is meant for the masses to deliver pure fun and entertainment, and it delivers in bucket loads.
First of all I will say the 3D aspect was good for Kato vision and also at some action scenes, but as you progress through the movie, it starts to blend in and the 3D doesn't stand out much. From the previous 3D movies I have seen this one would be a little bit better compared to the post converted 3D movies.
Now for the real deal. Seth Rogen rocks yet again, I loved his comic roles before and he doesn't disappoint in this one as well. Some scenes with him and Kato were hilarious. As for Jay Chou, I really hope he improves his English because at times it's quite hard to understand him, but apart from that he was good. Cameron Diaz was OK as she didn't have much of a role. Christoph Waltz was awesome as the villain, both funny and sinister. The Black Beauty was awesome too, loved the retro look and feel of the car. I'm not going to go into details about the storyline as I feel the storyline section on this site is adequate enough to explain what to expect in the movie.
The action scenes were awesome and the plot was simple and well paced, good enough to keep the viewer interested till the end. The humor in the movie was great and this movie blended both the superhero and comedy genre perfectly.
If you get the time than go and enjoy this movie this weekend, you won't be disappointed. Just be mindful that if you are expecting the classic Green Hornet than you might be disappointed. But if you are willing to give this modern day Green Hornet a chance than you will be pleasantly surprised.
Tron: Legacy (2010)
A Visual Treat in 3D
I just got the chance to see this movie today in 3D and I must say this has been a vast improvement over the 3D movies that have come out this year. The special effects were quite good, a very worthwhile effort from Disney. It's definitely worth watching in 3D, give this one a go. The extra bucks is worth it. The fight and chase scenes were quite impressive. Felt like being transported into a actual video game.
Despite having such good special effects, this movie really lacked a backbone in terms of plot. The story was not that confusing as some people say, it is a little complicated and there definitely are loose ends. I'm reviewing this movie by itself and am making no comparisons to the original. But I feel with such technology and special effects you really do need a engaging story that grabs your attention right from the beginning. Sadly this movie had some pretty slow moments which spoiled the over all experience. A movie shot in 3D should have a engaging story and spectacular visuals. Somewhat like what James Cameron did with Avatar. But here we are left disappointed as both ends of the equation don't match up.
The actors gave a decent performance. Jeff Bridges was good with his role, I felt there was some resemblance to The Big Lebowski, which was fun. The animated and younger version of him was not that much of a distraction as we do have to consider that Clu was a digital clone of Kevin Flynn. The costume designs and the atmosphere of the movie was awesome. I personally didn't expect such a dark ethereal creation of The Grid from Disney. The movie was dark and I feel it contrasted the colors used for the costume designs and settings quite nicely. As I had mentioned earlier, this movie is a visual treat for the audience. They definitely got the 3D and the atmosphere and mood of the film right.
I haven't heard of Daft Punk much but I will say their music in the film was perfect. It truly captured the mood and vibe of the movie. The beats were so fitting for the life in The Grid. So expect to hear some real good electronic music in this film, very futuristic.
So far a good experience, really enjoyed the special effects. Kinda boring at times and slow paced, but if you are able to look past that than it is a movie you will enjoy.
Faster (2010)
The Rock has finally come back!!
To start of, this movie is not groundbreaking and I doubt it is going to claim to be. It's a simple revenge thriller with a few plot twists. That's why I did not give it a full score.
But those things aside, this movie was quite fun to watch. Loved how Dwayne Johnson finally decided to get back to his action roles after the lame kid movies he had starred in lately. His screen presence was awesome, and kinda reminded me of the good old times while he was wrestling.
The music and the setting were awesome, it really did remind me of the 70's revenge thrillers. The entire movie was like an ode to the old dark and moody revenge movies just as Kill Bill was. I believe they got the setting and tone of the movie quite right, and the music itself was awesome. Nothing flashy just melancholy sounding from beginning to end.
The action scenes were quite good since Dwaynes character (The Driver) just oozed of cold blooded anger and hatred. Making the showdowns quite interesting and funny at one point as well. The other characters were entertaining as well, The Killer and The Cop. Each had their own story going on until they get intertwined with each other as the movie progresses.
Overall I loved the movie and I feel anyone who is wanting to check out a action flick this weekend should definitely check this movie out. It will be worth the money spent if you are looking to be entertained.
The Last Airbender (2010)
How could they ruin something so good......
I just saw the movie today and 20 minutes into the movie I had to stop. I could not believe how disjointed the story became after such a short time. Now I'm wondering why in gods name did they give M. Night Shyamalan to direct this movie. He totally ruined this for the fans. I personally loved The Last Airbender cartoon but this, it is a disgrace.
For those fans who are going to see this on DVD or Bluray, please don't. It is not even worth a single cent. Consider 2 hours of your lives wasted if you are a fan and still able to sit through the entire movie.
I being a Indian, don't get why the Fire Nation was comprised of Indians. I don't mean to be racist but when did the cartoon make the fire nation folks Indian. The Indian dude playing Commander Zhao, I doubt anyone could have taken him seriously. To make matters worse at one point in the movie he had jerry curls. The Fire Lord Ozai didn't even look menacing, they just got a simple Maori dude to play that role. They also made the names of the characters sound annoying with their eastern accent tribute. That was when I decided enough is enough. At least I'm going to put it as simple as this: 1. The story sucks majorly, too many plot holes and the major plot points were changed 2. The actors were emotionless, bunch of amateurs more like it 3. I hope Shyamalan doesn't get to make another one of this movies 4. After this movie, this series needs to be rebooted or definitely axed. Can't let this bad experience ruin a great cartoon for me.
You all have been warned.
