Chronicle (2012)
Horrible movie
This film was made with a $50 camcorder and jiggles on purpose. How it gets good ratings on IMDb is beyond belief - the writing and acting is boring. If you can actually view it. Half the time the screen is moving so much it makes you seasick.
The movie is a complete waste of time. If you're going to use your camcorder from 2004 to make a movie do it on a $100,000 budget, not 12 million like this movie did. Absolutely no excuse for how much of a disaster this movie is.
Do not spend money on this movie!
Do not waste your time with this movie and get suckered in by the good reviews like I did.
The Road (2009)
Dismal plot, movie makes no sense
Let me first start by saying I love Apocalypse movies. It is rare I don't like one. But this one is just horrible. It didn't even make any logical sense.
My primary problem with this movie is you are never told or discover how exactly the apocalpyse started. Why is the world the way it is? The movie misses a golden opportunity to make a statement on an important issue like global warming and instead turns the movie into a "character case study." The movie watcher knows these facts: 1) the world erupts into random fires; 2) the world has random cataclysmic earthquakes; and 3) every living thing on the planet is dead except humans. (except for two bugs shown at the very end which come as a complete surprise to the main characters after existing in this world for what appears to be 7-10 years.) What catastrophe on Earth could cause earthquakes for 7 years? What could kill every living thing on the plant and yet completely spare humans? I don't know of any explanation for it and apparently the producer and writers didn't either because they don't tell you. I could have lived with not knowing if the characters had been born AFTER the apocalypse, but 99% of them lived through it. Lame.
These questions are really important because all the humans are starving and resorting to cannibalism and many are committing suicide. The main characters are even considering it throughout the movie. It is also important because for some unknown reason the main characters have to travel "south" where it is warmer. So the apocalypse is basically the destruction of every living thing and causes every known natural calamity. Whatever. Without some known logical reasoning for why the things are the way they are I found myself asking more questions and feeling "outside" the movie instead of engrossed in it. To me, it seemed like the producer was too "afraid" to take a political stand and describe what exactly happened for fear of offending some viewers.
The acting was good, but the cliché plot and overall feel and experience of the movie made me want to vomit.
August (2008)
Very boring and waste of time
The best part about this movie was the music score. And that was average. The movie reminded me of a snapshot of anyone's life. Why would I want to watch that? It wasn't funny, it wasn't suspenseful, and it wasn't witty. The writing was bland. There was zero plot. One of the characters in the movie mentioned the company was running on fumes. I think the movie itself was running on fumes.
The main character also smokes a lot. I've always found that directors who feel their characters need a "smoke prop" are using it to make up for the lack of something in the movie. In this case the movie lacked an actual plot.
Kuro-obi (2007)
Awesome film!
This is truly a great film. Original and refreshing in its presentation. Sure, the plot can be easily deduced, but the environment, film direction, pure beauty of clean karate used appropriately makes this movie a real winner.
The picture is beautiful, cinematography excellent. You develop a real connection with the characters as well. The movie is also suspenseful and engaging. The fighting scenes are spectacular. It also captures the historic period of 1930's Japan very well too.
You can even learn something by watching this movie. There are lessons of life to be learned and you can come away feeling very satisfied that your time was well spent.
This is one of those movies where after watching it you say, "Wow."
