The Endless (2017)
I can't put my finger on it...
I really liked this, but it's hard to articulate why. The acting is good but not phenomenal, the sets are nice but not special, the location is interestingly pastoral but mundane, but concept is mysterious but not crazily-so...yet something about it pulled me in.
The way I know a film is doing something for me is when I have to stop it halfway through, as I did with this one. The next day when I thought about picking it back up, I was enthusiastic. I wanted to know what would happen to these brothers, if we'd find out about the mysterious sky thing, why the people were acting as they did, and for the most part, I got the answers I wanted.
Compelling, I suppose is the word I'm looking for. If you're looking for an offbeat, strange, but compelling film, this one's for you.
Harry & Meghan: The Complete Story (2022)
What were they thinking?
It's hard to grasp what these two parasites were thinking when they made this. If they'd taken two minutes away from their navel-gazing, they'd realize the vast majority of people aren't on board with their narrative.
Was "The Firm" so meanie? Did she not get along with her in-laws? I'm blotting my eyes with hundred dollar bills.
Here are the cold facts:
1. She was welcomed with open arms by the royal family. Now-King Charles walked her down the aisle, for Pete's sake.
2. The British public lined the streets to cheer for her everywhere she went.
3. She had multiple million-pound wedding at no cost to her, courtesy of The Firm.
4. Only one person in her family attended.
I won't get into the climate hypocrisy, it's plain for anyone with a brain cell to see they don't buy their own narrative on that one.
They have been caught lying again and again. From how they first met, to how Harry proposed, to how they were secretly married before the wedding etc.
Meghan claims she had to Google God Save The Queen, and didn't know how to curtsy. She claims she didn't know there would be a hierarchy, or unpaid service, or the countless other things any well-read person would know. Doesn't she realize this highlights her own ignorance and cultural shortcomings. I'm sorry you're a rube, darling, but that no one's fault but your own. Same applies to you, Harry. You married a rube, it's not suddenly the Monarchy's problem that she doesn't know your own national anthem.
Lastly, they gave their marriage within the RF a hot minute before jetting off to Montecito to cry into their Hermès throws. Anyone with half a brain knows it takes time to settle into a marriage, a new family, the in-laws. That she registered her domain, trademark and such within months (if not before) of marrying demonstrates she never had any intention of making things work.
Give it a pass. This is a tedious, self-aggrandizing set of propagandist scenes which are both poorly structured and poorly acted. Megan is like Amber Heard, the fakery just wafts off of her.
Nope (2022)
A different, suspenseful sci-fi
I really enjoyed this. It was well written, well made and performed by a cast which knows their craft. There were some scenes I enjoyed but couldn't really understand how they fit into the narrative, but I may just not have "gotten" them. They did not detract from the story.
Jordan Peele's quality writing and filmmaking is on full display here. The scenery is almost a character in itself, the camera work beautiful and intimate.
Daniel Kaluuya is perfect in this role, he's very restrained and portrays his emotional state with such subtlety. He's grieving, weirded out, determined, strong, scared, intelligent...sometimes all at the same time.
Keke Palmer is just perfect in this, sometimes bombastic, flighty, serious, determined and solid.
Brandon Perea and Steven Yuen are great actors which display their range very well, and Michael Wincott (and his gravelly voice) is a legend. What a character that was.
The creature was unexpected and inventive, overall this was a really enjoyable film!
The Sandman (2022)
Such potential
How do you take something as brilliant as this comic book and turn it into this? The dialogue is terrible, the pacing is all over the place, and although there is some bit of "show not tell" there still way too much spoonfed "telling".
Netflix and Gaiman should trust their audience's intelligence. This is a terrible trend, it's happening everywhere, it's all dumbed down.
The effects were very good.
L'Agence: l'immobilier de luxe en famille (2020)
Terrible music, enjoyable show
As another user has stated, the music is terrible. Who in their right mind pairs multimillion Euro properties with vulgar rap music? I'm a French expat and I know many people in my country like this music without completely understanding the lyrics, but any production aiming to appeal to a worldwide market should know better. Some of those lyrics are both offensive and misogynist. I happen to like a lot of rap and hip hop, but like all genres there's a limit.
That being said, the family is sweet, and close, Majo is awesome, the properties are amazing and the scenery is gorgeous. They must've really chosen their shoot days well to get that many clear, sunny days!
Invasion (2021)
Drivel
This was so astonishingly unwatchable, I can only conclude that those giving this more than 3 stars are paid to do so. The writing is atrocious, the characters are annoying, unlikeable, low-IQ caricatures, the pacing is atrocious, the plot thin and idiotic.
Do producers even read the scripts anymore?
Ni shi wo de rong yao (2021)
Not my usual cup of tea
I don't usually go for slow romance/drama series but I've been curious about life in modern Shanghai so I gave it a spin. Although I know this is idealized, controlled by the Chinese gov't, and not exemplary of the average person's life there, I still enjoyed it very much.
It's such a slow burn but the characters are endearing, even if the actors don't have the most depth. It's sweet and "clean" (minimal profanity/obscenity), for lack of a better word, and you do get to see interesting shots of Shanghai, the countryside, and other cities. You also get a glimpse into life with family, school chums, friends, culture, and professional dynamics. An overall delightful series.
Moonfall (2022)
What a mess
I'll start off by saying I'll watch pretty much anything set in space. My bar is embarrassingly low for spacey stuff, and even I couldn't get through this colossal waste of time and money.
I hope Halle Berry and Patrick Wilson were paid enough to end their careers this spectacularly.
Santa Inc. (2021)
Nice try
Nice try, elitists.
Nice try insulting more than half the country.
Nice try getting someone like me, who's an immigrant and not a Christian or Republican, to rate your trash as 1. Only because there's no zero.
I'd love to see Sarah Silverman and Seth Rogan's reaction if an evangelical Christian made this exact type of trash about Hanukkah. You know they'd be ugly-crying all over Twitter.
