Fanny Lye Deliver'd (2019)
Horrible Histories meets Hammer Horror meets Blackadder....
Horrible Histories meets Hammer Horror meets Blackadder....
The basic story could have been quite good but the film is so unrealistic as to be more of a pantomime than a drama. Low budget has not allowed for getting anything dirty so all the clothes, house etc are like brand new, nothing grubby as it would obviously have been and everyone looks like they are fresh out of the shower.
The acting is surprisingly ham and the baddies are more like a comedy duo despite being evil.
All in all, a missed opportunity as could have been good with the right budget and the chance to create a realistic dark representation.
Saltburn (2023)
A typical "netflix" type of film, style over content...
Entertaining enough but typical of the netflix funded films (this is actually Amazon but same style), big budget for actors and filming, lower budget for the script. Characters act inconsistently just to suit the plot and, when ideas run short, throw in a few OTT sex scenes... these are always good for getting newspaper inches and maybe the youth of today like them?
Has been compared to Mr Ripley and similar basic storyline but lacks the jeopardy of that film and consistency of plot.
All in all, worth a look but the OTT sex scenes may make it an uncomfortable watch with your mum or for a first date.....
Hvítur, hvítur dagur (2019)
A black, black comedy.....
This is a very Icelandic film, slow moving and atmospheric, involving you in the characters and drawing you in to the story. I would definitely not describe it as a thriller, more as a very dark black comedy.
The young granddaughter & main character play off each other in a believable fashion, she has an amusing way with words and a natural confidence and is in a few gently comic scenes including the scary goodnight story, playing the piano and getting advice on removing fish blood from her dress at the police station. Meanwhile he has scenes including smashing up the computer during a zoom call with his shrink, and then being accused of assault, the fight in the police station and the kidnapping all of which are low key and darkly comic, in sharp contrast to standard US fare.
It certainly is not a laugh a minute and there is no happy ending, just like real life, but certainly one to watch.
Greta (2018)
Greta is too OTT to generate any suspense...
Basic concept could have been ok but Greta is too unrealistic and the plot is presented in such a ridiculous way as to remove any tension, one to avoid.
Grave (2016)
Quirky french horror
Not what I was expecting as had avoided reviews, however I am an enjoyer of quirky European cinema and this ticks all the boxes, don't judge till you have watched it, it is certainly different, no "funny business" so safe to watch with the family if they are horror friendly.
