Airlock (2015)
Grows and grows and grows
I gave the first episode 5/10, but it had enough promise to keep me watching. Damn glad I did! The exposition is slow (which I love). Characters build steadily through some great reveals and plot twists.
There's some great underlying tension between the characters, some real cliffhangers and a great bad guy :)
It's definitely at the adult end of the spectrum, not something you want your kids watching, but that gives a mature, hard hitting edge that's missing from a lot of genre television at the moment. 4 episodes in and I cant wait for the rest. Definitely buying on boxset when it comes out.
Munger Road (2011)
the classic spookfest!
I don't know the director. I'm not related to a cast member. I'm not starstruck after seeing this at some frightfest in some collegetown festival.
This is a genuinely, edge of seat, peek beyond the pillow 100% ghost story with suspense, jumps, leaps and "DID YOU SEE THAT????" moments.
I'm honestly surprised anyone could mention the budget, I was more worried about what was in the shadows.....
If the independent film industry can deliver popcorn feightfests this effectively without needing to rope in Katy Perry to play the damasel in distress, then we can rest assured, as the viewing public, that we're in for some fun !
World of the Dead: The Zombie Diaries (2011)
Manage your expectations and enjoy it
I'll be honest and disagree with everyone else here and say I really enjoyed it. If you like your horror gritty and bleak, you'll enjoy this. If you're appreciation got over the lower budget of Stakeland and had you hooked, you'll enjoy this. Its basically another fine addition to the canon of horror that says "We are the monsters". Think the first series of Survivors, Stakeland, Carriers. All stories on film, as opposed to just films.
Sure its low budget, the special effects aren't that special and some of the editing is ropey, but the core story, the characters, the "realism", dystopia in the face of adversity...if those things float your boat, give it a spin :)
Stargate Universe (2009)
Took its time to get started but now...
...episode 5 (Light) may be the finest piece of Sci Fi writing I've seen in years.
I'll admit I fell asleep during the pilot, struggled to get through the third episode, started liking episode 4 and now I'm just hoping the rest holds up to the standard of episode 5.
The floating camera has gone from tiresome exposition provision to being a key dramatic device, the characters are great (of course they're unlikeable in the opening episodes - do you think being stranded on a dying ship with no hope of rescue is REALLY the sort of thing to build good times and great humour?)
OK, some of the "cinema verite" esquire quick pans are stolen from BSG but thats really the only similarity. We're not talking genocide, there's no nemesis other than rations, the comparison just doesn't hold.
If you can, watch it with either a top rate cinema system or a pair of headphones to do justice to the score, which really adds more than its been given credit for - but stick with it, it's worth it
