We Summon the Darkness (2019)
Awful
If you love terrible acting and ridiculous scripts, this is perfect for you.
Braven (2018)
Love Jason Momoa
Jason Momoa and Stephen Lang are compelling. But the criminal "mastermind" is one of the dumbest bad guys ever, so the plot falls apart if you think about it for five seconds. If he had half a brain (even though he's supposed to be clever) the movie would have ended in 20 minutes without violence.
Mother! (2017)
Pretentious twaddle
Aronofsky has said that he wrote this film very quickly. It shows. The intriguing set-up: a blocked writer and his young wife are trying to create an artistic oasis for themselves, but are visited by random strangers, falls to pieces very quickly. Jennifer Lawrence is compelling, as always. In fact, each of the four main actors are solid and much of the movie is beautifully filmed, particularly the dizzying use of hand-held or close-up tracking cams. But the writing and plot are absolute garbage. Shockingly bad movie that will appeal to pretenders.
Juno (2007)
Emmmmmm
I really wanted to love this movie, so maybe that's why it disappointed me. I loved the supporting characters, and really liked Ellen Page as Juno, but felt the story/character tried too hard, too obviously to be "cool." Juno was great as a cynical, hard-ass high-schooler, but the rest of her life was not consistent with her own. The school scenes, with disapproving teens swarming away from Juno....come on.... I went to high school in the late 70s and no one reacted that way, no students at least. Allison Janney, Ellen Page, the actor who played the father were all excellent. The adoptive parents had roles which the actors, or the writing, couldn't sustain... I suspect it was the writer.....
