Encanto (2021)
Show me a better movie about generational trauma and expectations, not sure there is.
I asked a friend, who like me, is in his 30s, if he had watched Encanto and he responded with "oh yeah, I love silly movies like this kids movie". And...no...there is nothing about Encanto that can be described as "silly". It's fun, it's funny, it's heartwarming, it's engaging, and the songs are so beautifully crafted, the whole movie is a masterpiece of art and excellence. But after you watch it, it gives you so much to think about! About the way we label and pressure kids, the effects it has on mental health, generational trauma that gets passed, the hurt it causes those who weren't even there when the bad event happened, family dynamics that are toxic, the role of community, etc. Each of the main characters can be analyzed and overanalyzed and it can be so interesting to draw parallels with your own life and those people you know. Y'all, this movie is what finally made me understand why different ethnicities/races/family/people carry different generational traumas and that's why "they are the way they are". Because we are shaped by things that have been passed on to us. I don't watch that many movies, but I haven't seen anything that provided me with this much mental entertainment in a really long time. So, I really love this "silly kids movie". I'm impressed.
The Royal Treatment (2022)
What did I just watch?
I'm in my 30s, so maybe I'm not the target audience, but I wonder who is...7 year olds who are transitioning from cartoons to live action movies? Because this movie is extremely predictable, with terrible characters, overdone, and had no redeeming qualities. It looks like a movie from the 80s, maybe it would have been interesting back then. But a 2022 release of this? Even cartoon movies for kids have a lot more dept. Yes, we all dream of meeting a prince and them falling in love with us because we know how to "keep it real", but this is just cringey. All scenes are cringeworthy, actually. There's just too much wrong with this movie. But then again, maybe a 7yr would appreciate the novel idea.
