The Tax Collector (2020)
1st half 9, 2nd half 2
I cannot believe how the film turned out, it was riveting up until Canejo turned up then it turned dreadful. It was always a bit far fetched but at the same time (having read a lot about gang violence) the scenes/situations were 'believable'.
Shia LaBeouf is incredible as usual, up there with Outlaws in this film.
Such a let down the 2nd half of the film though.
I know some of the cartels are into their spiritual/satanic ideas, but a girl willingly having her throat slit was a bit silly.
The woman throwing a pipe bomb during a barrage of bullets was a bit silly.
Controlling ALL L. A. and then the entire empire being overrun without a shot fired back was a bit silly.
If you want to watch this film, turn if off when Conejo turns up, as even the dialogue went awful.
PS:- Special shout out for having 2 hours to save your children's lives, and being able to get The Crips (other side of town) tooled up, raid a house, then relocate to kidnappers all done in 2 hours.
Also amazing that after you've realised your being wiretapped, you're still using mobile phones. Genius.
GREAT START, DREADFUL FINISH! Real, real shame it went South so quickly.
Hollyoaks (1995)
So bad
This is 100% the worst show of all time.
The very first season (with Kurt Benson) and all them was just about bearable as it resembled a teen show.
I've seen probably 50 episodes over the next 20+ years, it is....so....so....bad.
Acting is atrocious, storylines are ridiculous, camerawork is dreadful, dialogue is suicidal, and oh yes the storyline (again), if you have an IQ less than 6 you might fight it interesting.
I wouldn't leave this show on for Hitler if I had him tied up, it is THAT BAD I wouldn't put him through it.
Phil Redmond the creator (also of the dreadful show Backside), owes every single person in The UK a handwritten apology, you'll go down in history as being the worst soap writer of all time. Apologise now.
Black Bird: You Promised (2022)
Truly Amazing Ending.
When Jimmy is on the airplane talking to the air stewardess Tori, you're made to believe after all his anguish that he might be back to normal as he's chatting her up.
Only then to look out the window to see fields (and he instantly thinks about where the girls might be buried), it's a clever way of showing that even now he's free, what he knows/has heard from Larry will remain with him for the rest of his life.
To me it was an incredible show, especially the last episode, and (for me) especially the ending.
And I love The Verve :)
The Old Man: I (2022)
Dogs
Good first episode, would've been a higher rating but.....
Bit with the car fight scene was a bit silly.
In the dead of night you can hear a car a long way off, didn't hear it till it crashed, then he couldn't be bothered whistling to get his 2 dogs to destroy the enemy, had a 10 minute pointless fight instead.
Solid opener though, did enjoy it overall.
Our Boys: Chapter 7: Judging by its End (2019)
Well.....
That was incredibly hard to watch, and an unbelievable well made episode.
40+ minutes are the complete build up, I almost had to turn it off because I knew what was coming and I didn't want to watch it.
This is seriously one of the best episodes I've seen of anything in the last few years, to document (factually) an actual murder was heart-breaking to watch, I thought it was done rather poignantly, and without any bias, just showing you the abhorrent murder that followed.
The Wire: Late Editions (2008)
Best episode of the season (IMO)
This is my third time through The Wire, I binge watch it every 4/5 years to give myself a chance to forget most of the stuff! I remember the main storyline, who dies and 'who kills who' etc but the one that really got me this watch through was Bubbles.
His entire character arc through all seasons is incredible, and I was almost in tears at his drug counselling when he mentioned Sherrod. Like Waylon (played by the one and only Steve Earle) said, Bubbles almost wanted to have 'the bugggg' as he blamed himself for the death of both his closest friends. I also cannot put into words the acting from Bubs (and every one in the show to tell the truth) but with Bubbles, you feel every single emotion on show at that time.
The scene with Marlo, Chris, Cheese and Monk just after arrest is also one of my favourites! Or the unforgettable scene with Michael and Snoop in the car.
It just truly is an amazing episode, McNulty's about to face reality, Kima is about to break the most sacred police code, The Sun newspaper's infighting, the mayor turning in to EXACTLY what he didn't want to, Michael going in hiding. And finally Marlo arrested.
That's the thing with The Wire, SO MUCH happens all the time, it literally keeps your eyes absolutely pinned to the screen in case you miss something. They were never scared of killing of big characters, never did any of the 'Hollywood scenes' for added excitement, they never needed to, and the show sure as hell never strayed away from it's raw, street feel, from the corners, to the police, to the judiciary, to the senate.
I cannot wait to watch it again in a few years.
This episode is better than 99.9% of films made.
Foundation (2021)
6 so far.
This 6 could rapidly change into a 2/3.
I thought the first 2 episodes were really good, to try and tell a story of 8 books (I've not read any but know people who have) I thought they explained quite a hard story to tell relatively well, and quickly.
There are so many flaws though! My biggest gripe is the casting of Salvor Hardin, she is an horrendous actress and for some reason the dialogue with her/in fact the entire storyline with the 'barbarians' is absolutely cringeworthy, like it was written by a Love Island fan with an iq of 60.
The fight scenes are dreadful as well. We're supposed to believe time can be folded so gargantuan distances can be covered by 'jumping', yet soldiers still stand around in open desert without being able to see somebody stood up 10 metres away on a hill.
There seems to be a liberal point behind the show as well imo, all the main characters seem to be strong, black women (again I've not read the book so I don't know if this is as should be), the constant love-making scenes which have absolutely no relevance to anything.
Or when the planet Hardin is on is being wiped out, and the kids are running around smiling. It's so badly done the entire Salvor Hardin storyline and I have to stop myself from skipping the scenes.
It took me 4 hours to watch the last 2 episodes I was that disinterested. I can honestly say the only character I like is the Demerzel, and when she said she was religious I burst out laughing.... She's an android.....That was created...By Empire.... Why would she have beliefs?? Empire hates beliefs so he programmed his confidant to be religious.
The costumes/scenes/settings are really good, but the writing and some of the characters are ridiculous. Stop spewing out the same tripe as other shows. Be more like Expanse, less like the Walking Dead.
Godfather of Harlem (2019)
10 + 5 = 7
Season 1 was incredible! I thought this was going to be the new Boardwalk Empire, maybe not The Wire but still was expecting a lot after the first season.
Season 2 started off ok, the first few episodes showed glimpses, but then after episode 3 it almost lost a star every episode.
I understand the caveat 'dramatizations of characters etc' just for the show but Jesus Christ, Chin Gigante shooting all his own made men?
Joe Bonanno wanted Bumpy dead, but 'let him go' after taking his French Connection.
The entire 'praise Allah' from Bumpy's daughter was excruciating and so tedious by the end I wanted to look away.
There are 100s of more ridiculous things but I can't be bothered as it's winding me up now. How you can run a crime series without any common knowledge of the mafia is beyond me.
Like Chin 'all my phones are bugged' then Bumpy rings him and they talk drugs.....I mean, come on.
I honestly don't understand how SO MANY shows start off amazing, then think 'the audience will love this' and it turns into a stinking mess.
Season 1 :- 9/10
Season 2 :- 2/3.
I really hope there isn't a season 3.
The North Water: To Live Is to Suffer (2021)
Incredible.
Probably the best single tv episode..... and the best ending to a tv show ever.
I've seen them all, that was amazing.
Gomorrah: Inferno (2017)
Best episode for me (so far)
It's my second time through Gomorrah, I usually leave a series a love as long as possible to watch it again (managed 3 years) so hopefully I forget some of it.
This really is a stand-out episode and maybe the director is showing us even Ciro has a conscience somewhere. (I think using the trafficked girl might've made a 'what-if' click in his brain if his daughter was still alive.)
It could've even been a 90 minute film this episode it was that good, really enjoyed the film L'Immortale.
Excellent episode, can't wait for season 5.
((TRY Suburra, Romanzo Criminale La Serie and Love/Hate if you want other great shows.))
Romanzo criminale - La serie (2008)
Incredible.........Lost for words
I saw The Wire about 10 years ago, and only a few crime series I've seen have come close. The Deuce was one, Love/Hate (strongly recommend, Irish gangsters) was another, but this trumps The Wire.
I am actually astonished there's been only 5000 people who've rated this when The Sopranos has 285,000! They don't compare in the slightest!
There isn't one non-believable character in the show, the soundtrack fits every single scene perfect, and the acting is borderline perfect, I didn't think in 1 scene 'yeah right' or 'as if' as the entire setting was entirely believable.
36 year old man, I've read hundreds of fact-based books on the mafia, and every thing I ever imagined about it was brought to life in this series.
If you're thinking about buying/giving this a chance I can't recommend it enough, stop whatever you're doing, walk the dog later, grab yourself a beer and put it on!
10/10 and possibly the best thing I've ever seen.
Darklands (2019)
Pretty Awful
The fact people write shows like this and expect to make it believable mean one of two things..... Either the directors/writers are targeting a brain-dead audience, or the people making the show are that themselves.
The acting....It's honestly like watching a load of bloopers which have made it to the outtakes, only they're not funny and the acting is that bad you actually end up thinking you could be an actor yourself.
Examples of the dreadfulness of this show:- The UFC Fight
1)When has anybody in UFC history ever done ridiculous moves like that in a fight? I honestly though I was watching Karate Kid 4 for a minute.
2) The kid looks about 5 stones lighter than his opponent, he struggles to make weight yet Ol' Tubby (who somebody even shouts 'fat b....' at is allowed to fight.
3) The kid's at school....And he's fighting an adult.....
Every single scene is like this, I couldn't believe I made it through the first episode and started the second, I kept thinking 'it can't get worse'......It continued to stay dreadful.
I've given it a 2, it would've been a 1 but because of reading the comments I found the show Love/Hate which I honestly put up there with The Wire and Boardwalk Empire, it was absolutely amazing compared to this bilge, and to think people are comparing LH to this is astonishing.......
I don't even want my hour back I wasted watching this show, as it's probably in my top 5 worst shows of all time.
Please don't waste your time with it........Better counting worms in the garden
Vikings: The Ice Maiden (2020)
So boring
Oh my lord, I don't understand how each episode gets worse.
I told myself after season 4 I wasn't going to watch anymore, but due to the fact the first 3 season were amazing, I've almost forced myself to watch it, but this is now unbearable, it's turning into Glee.
I'd also like to know how Bjorn (like others) has access to a teleportation machine and can just turn up where and when he wants.
I actually think this is the last one I'll ever watch. What a shame, been too awful for a long time. And don't get me started on Ivor's crutch....
Frontier: La Fin Du Monde (2018)
Fight
Was great as usual, but after seeing the opening fight scene in episode 1, the fight right at the end of this episode was pretty dire.
They took 30+ men out (who were running around like lemmings in the background). Bit silly that scene
Miracle Workers (2019)
Worth a watch
If you have 20 minutes to kill, this is definitely a show to watch.
It's short, fast paced and thoroughly entertaining. There's quite a lot of hidden jokes, and God has had me howling in some scenes, (which is very rare for me).
Funniest show I've seen in a long time, I think the overall character selection was excellent, and they don't bore you with character background (which in comedy sometimes isn't needed).
If you bake definitely watch this,
Westworld: Kiksuya (2018)
Best episode of the series so far
I've found it a little tedious in the past with Westworld when they're jumping throughout the timelines (although I do understand it's for the story to be told in that way and keep viewers guessing).
However this is IMHO easily the best episode in the entire show. I've found Dolores has become rather boring as well, every time her and her gang are on screen now we just hear 'bang bang', it's a shame they couldn't have split her screen coverage with Akecheta.
Zahn McClarnon is an extremely gifted actor as well, definitely should've had more air time.
