Among the Willows (2023)
Among the Willows doesn't disappoint ... for the most part
Among the Willows is another independent movie that has many very good moments and a few not so good ones. Overall the movie is entertaining and well made. The music matches the scenes very well and most of the acting is good to very good. The story is really nothing new, but it's still fun to watch unfold.
The story is told from three points of view. Mary Cronon, her grandfather John Williams and her kidnapper, Eli Kilpatrick. The three stories finally merge into a final reckoning but not before a hidden truth about Mary is revealed.
Overall the movie is well shot and acted, although I felt some were better than others. The real treasure is the supporting cast. The three henchmen, Tom, Spence and Hiram, were very good as was Miller and Everett. The saloon girls were adorable. Susie showed wonderful compassion in her relationship with Everett and Mae expertly goes from scared little girl to shotgun totting badass in a couple of heartbeats. Their chemistry together was very enjoyable to watch. Mr. Kilpatrick was excellent as the bully father figure and Emma's scene in a flashback is very emotional. It was fun to see Caryn Richman play such a different role and she nailed it. How could you not smile when she spits on the grave? As for the three main leads this is where it weakens... but just a little. Mary goes happy little girl at her 16th birthday to experiencing tremendously life altering events. Very strong acting chops are required for such a role and although the actress did well enough, her inexperience showed just a little. The first scene where we see Eli was well done but then as the movie goes on, he seems to become more one dimensional. He does redeem himself in the third act with some wonderful scenes with Mary where I could feel his pain. John, I felt was not really up to the standard that was being set around him. He does, although, have a couple of very good efforts in scenes with Miller. They seem to have good on screen chemistry, but overall it felt more like acting instead of investing in the role. The end scene with John and Everett, while was good, could and should have been better.
All that being said and done, I did find this an enjoyable and well made movie. Some up and coming talent mixed in with some seasoned actors is a good recipe. I hope it does well.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023)
A nice way to say goodbye
Overall a nice closing to the series of movies. It delivers humor, touching moments and even though it's the end, it still leaves open the chance that its not. "So you're sayin there's a chance?" Yeah, it's Hollywood, there's always a chance! Rocket's story was hard not to fall in love with. Really everyone had a good exit story but somehow I still just didn't totally click with the movie. Fun call backs to earlier characters and touching scenes galore but something was missing for me. I really wanted to like it more and I did like it better than the first two. Maybe it's just the Marvel burnout.
How I Raised My Mom (2021)
Funny Little Movie
Cute and funny short about a woman who goes through a separation from her boyfriend and finds herself in the process. The bar scene is a laugh a minute. Barbara is enjoyable to watch as she maneuvers through the breakup and realizing only she can make herself happy, but Michael steals the movie. Quality isn't the best as some scenes are too dark but it's a fun short I saw as part of a double premiere event.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
The best Spider-Man yet!
I loved, loved, loved this movie. I laughed, cried felt nostalgic...just a wonderful time and what movies should be, an entertaining escape from reality!
The Gallows (2015)
Typical scary movie... that kind of works
A lot of typical scares but it somehow all works. I don't really care for this kind of movie but the ending just really made me jump even though I expected to. Lol overall it's a good movie to drag out around Halloween and watch on a cold night.
Lost Outlaw (2021)
Oh boy....
Well, hmmm. Not the best movie I've seen in a while. Right from the start it's pretty hooky. The acting is mostly poor, Jack, Quinn, and the gang don't do a very job, but the supporting cast is even worse. The retired sheriff and the Marshall seem ok and the two older guys were pretty funny as comedy relief but the story just lacks. It's obvious none of the cast really know how to ride a horse! The saving grace is the theme song, it's a real ear worm...
Above Snakes (2022)
Pretty good movie
I enjoyed this movie. The acting was pretty good and the story is interesting. I especially liked the black and white scenes that told the backstory, I thought they were well done. The kid that says "Nobody will remember that in a hundred years" was funny. You have to watch the background in the saloon where he did indeed get "pulled out by the ear". I almost missed it! Was a fun watch!
