This movie sends all the wrong messages
13 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I rarely bother writing reviews here these days, but I couldn't resist sharing a couple of opinions on this one. I do get why it's so highly rated here on IMDb, yet I thought that for a change a director would like to presents us with something different, like a social comment for instance, than the following:

A young man from a Moroccan family living in the suburbs of a Dutch city feels the effects of the anomic society he's inhabiting. On top of that he is far and away from the morals and ethics of his parents, which is presumable, given the fact that he lives in a environment which runs on mixture of mechanic (the parents) and organic solidarity (the dutch). Being alone (which by the way is signified by the allegory with the wolf - an animal who can lead a lonely life, but has strong guts, just like the main protagonist), estranged from the society of his parents, and alienated from the Dutch society in which he grew, he never manages to find his way, which results in outburst of violence, crime and, eventually, death.

Instead of criticising that by his oeuvre (even if he tried, he failed for the sake of the movie selling well) the director's use the same old story told once again here which results in praising the actual acts of violence, crime, vengeance, hypocrisy and most of all profanity. You see it's a natural for the individual to feel angst when confronted by something he doesn't know and understand, something that is foreign to him and therefore seen as a threat. Virtually, what we have here is the main protagonist who feels all this towards the time and place he lives in together with his environments and the people around his - friends and family included. It's crucial for us to understand that he fists his way throughout his life because he failed to find his way into it, therefore, he's unable to cope with it otherwise.

I believe, it's quite poignant the fact that he cannot maintain a simple relationship, which is obviously something he cannot manage, just because he doesn't know how to act in a relationship. The girl he likes is a bimbo from the hood - he'll kill for her, yet it's too much for him to call her for 6 months, because he never managed to internalise what it is to care and to be cared for.

Many will find inspiration in this movie, just because hoards of people nowadays are in the same situation. They feel alone, lost, estranged and misunderstood - as I said above all these are the result of an anomic society under the influence of their own oeuvre. Many will praise the main protagonist for his ability to fist his way throughout the banalities of life.

Why I hated this movie is because it never grew to actually acknowledge all the problems that it raises. These are amongst many others: the human situation, discrimination, failure in multicultural policies, failure in dealing with the problems with the minorities an mostly marginalising these minorities. Not to mention the fact that instead putting these issues onto the table and furthermore dealing with the violence and crime that are so deceptively shown here, it actually makes us feel for them and most importantly for the need of a persona to establish them.

Last but not least it failed to perform an even slight attempt of evolution and reincarnation of the character - it's suitable to mention here that the movie lacked ANY likable characters to begin with apart from the dying, well-to-do brother, who's figure was obviously an allegory of the helplessness of the entire situation to change and the message that it's all doomed. All in all I cannot show respect for a movie that praises what is wrong in a society instead giving it a voice up for a chance. Maybe by filming it all, the director wanted to show us all the stereotypes through which he patched his movie and raise all the questions coming out of them, yet it all turned against it, not matter the good cinematography and believable characters.

Should have given it to Pasolini
28 October 2012
I really wanted to like the movie, firstly because I like the new wave of French cinema made in the 60's and secondly, because the plot seemed to be something that would strongly appeal to my cinematographic interests when it comes down to dystopian movies. Being a person that watched quite a few titles throughout his life I must say I was seldom more irritated by a movie like this one that managed to make me turn it off after as little as thirty minutes.

I don't really know why Godard didn't manage to pull this off, I suppose that he wasn't entirely aware of what he should be doing in order to create a Orwellian, dictatorship driven, anti utopian movie. It starts off extremely unpromising, as the environment is a patchwork of symbols that were not by any means used in place, not to mention the sound used for the movie was the most inappropriate thriller - like type of sound that they could possibly pick up from just any half - decent crime movie made by the same time.

If you manage to neglect the messed up environment that is a patchwork of this and that but never manages to make it up to the full picture that it should represent, there is no possible way you won't get extremely irritated by the computer - generated - Big brother - type of voice that brags nonsense that tries to sound as if it's brainwashing the listener. Beware that this is light-years behind 1984 - a movie, based on a great novel crafted to perfection - a dystopian masterpiece, that I can only praise.

After wanting to smash my sound system and after trying to adjust it well enough so the inadequate sound effects won't damage the proper functions of my nerves, I started thinking how this movie would have been a masterpiece if created by Pasolini. I remember how he managed to pull out the entire Theorema using the sound of a church bell, which by no means sounded anywhere that inappropriate as the sound effects found here.

Apart from that I do believe he would have done great job in implementing the political meaning into the movie. Godard failed in his attempt to be overly artsy in an environment that was probably chosen by himself - one that managed to fail his movie even more.

As a conclusion, with a little bit of sadness I should admit that at least the cover art looks somehow acceptable and pleasant, and that is why I bother to give one star to this hour and a half tape of lost meanings.

A disgrace - go for the original
18 March 2012
I was quite enthusiastic about seeing this title, thinking that Hollywood did make a successful remake this time around. God I was so terribly wrong. The movie starts with an intro in an extremely trying-to-look-artsy way, that is so much more than simply boring, than it shouts "uninspired". Yet I sat back, thinking that I haven't seen the real thing yet, thus I must not be all that critical from the beginning. What a mistake. As usual for an American remake, this one is not an exception. The acting by both Craig and Mara was extremely uninspired, just like the intro of the movie, that I mentioned above. I must admit that they did make the effort to actually go and shoot the "thing", meaning the movie in Sweden (yet I failed to understand why did they show the Swedish news in English though). Apart from that Craig looks kind of lost in his part, while Mara's way of recreating Lisbeth was so, so plain. Overall the movie was a huge disappointment for me, yet so boring, I did even fall asleep, right before the hours-mark, when I actually stopped even bothering myself watching it further more. If you did like the novel, or have somehow heard nice things about the original( or even about the remake) just try not torturing yourself with it, but instead go for the real thing. Rapace does pull off an Award winning performance in the original, while the whole movie itself is not to be even compared to the remake whatsoever.

A beautiful movie about love and friendship
10 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
Even though it does not start as promising as it turns out to be, this movie is a wonderful reflection of what down-to-Earth cinema of today should be. At first I was a little bit reluctant to see this title, as if it didn't appear to be appealing to my liking. Yet, after reconsidering and actually watching it, I must admit that it's a brilliant movie that displays human interaction, in terms of love and friendship, in a very simplistic way, that is perfection of its own kind. The twists and turns into the movie are a very nicely thought way of portraying the love between the characters, having them growing up as individuals together with that, and actually having to take the responsibilities of the adults' life, abandoning the trouble-less carefree existence (yet not to full extent). A thing that impressed me a lot into this movie was the very realistic, without any unneeded drama and overacting, way that shows the troublesome life of Stig Inge - one of the main characters of the movie - who is constantly followed by his anxiety and fear to live a normal life outside the boundaries of Tøyen - a neighborhood in Oslo where most of the action of the movie takes place. A movie that would have been a complete failure if it took the wrong turn of falling for the part of portraying the "reality show like" way of life of the main characters, instead used it as a tool to show the viewer what really matters instead of the misconception of fame and glory, and in the same time to remain nice and simplistic to what it should really be after it all - a perfect movie about love and friendship. I give 9 out of 10 just because I could use a tiny bit better camera work, yet it remains one of the best Norwegian movies I've seen by far.
