Nope (2022)
Horror Western
Horrorific without taking itself too seriously, great performances from all around. Great cultural references including the early Oprah years. In particular, the performance by Daniel K was one of the most relatable in any horror movie I have seen.
Brian and Charles (2022)
Cute and light hearted
This was an aggressively cute and humble film. It's characters were amazing and their interactions were particularly great and well written.
The plot is a little formulaic, but still pleasant nonetheless.
Memoria (2021)
Place and Sound
It's obvious that the director wanted to make something different, and in that they exceeded all expectations. The movie is filled with long, pondering, sometimes unending shots that force the viewer to take in the moment alongside the characters. On some of these three minute shots I found myself staring at each subject in the frame engaging my five senses and immersing so deeply into the film that I felt lost in it.
The pre show reel of scene photography and sketches is a trend I wish was more embraced, forcing directors and writers to really think what is the visual message of this movie.
This movie truly embraced the location, in every aspect showing and feeling like Colombia.
The pondering nature of this movie though was it's downfall for me. I often found myself drawn into my own memories when left for minutes to, say, watch a man scale a fish, leading down the path of my own life. The movies sound and pace we're so calming, I'm shamed to say I may have dozed off fo a few minutes, leaving me even more confused by the plot than I had been.
