Mortal Kombat (2021)
Great movie if you know anything about MK
I'm not the biggest MK fanatic but I've played several of the games and I loved this film. It's a great example of a fun, entertaining action movie, you don't have to look to deep into the plot holes or poor dialogue because of the tremendous nostalgia you feel seeing your characters come to life in great CGI, complete with gratuitous violence and cheesy catchphrases, so much to the point that characters even announce their victories, fatalities, and in game voice lines. The only improvement I could see would be a more diverse range of characters, while I hope to see these in future films, as the ending teased, I would've loved to see jade, Dvorah, the collector etc.
Still an excellent gory action film and a great way to spend 90 mins.
Dune (2021)
Interesting to see, boring to watch
I had little knowledge of the dune universe or history but was excited to see this take on a sci-fi future, the CGI and grand scale of everything was very impressive, and many of the concepts of the universe seemed incredibly well designed and creative, including but not limited too the costuming, races, space craft, helicopters that looked like dragonflys and interpretations of intergalactic landscapes. However overall the film failed to hold my attention for the 2.5 hours it was asking for, with a bland plot, relatively undeveloped and emotionless characters, and an overally bleak storyline and presentation on what couldve otherwise been a very captivating look into the dune universe.
Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022)
Excellent film
This is my second experience with Bollywood films and I found this vastly superior to the first. An incredible story with conflicting themes and perspectives on a complex issue, great cinematography and camera work, all backed up by an impressive acting performance as gangubai girlbosses her way through a powerful life as a brothel magnate.
The songs, which in other Indian films had seemed wildly inappropriate and out of place, were used in tasteful methods to display an inner monologue of our protagonist.
Dirty Harry (1971)
Cult classic, but shows it's age
Clint Eastwood has a great performance as Dirty Harry, a tough, no nonsense san Fransisco cop. There are some great lines that have been immortalised in pop culture and some funny cinematography, but it ultimately shows it's age and dated nature which, for me, undermines the drama of the film. Obviously nothing that could be done by the production on this, dated film are dated and this was made in the 70's, but it reminded me of a less intense, simpler Die Hard.
The Social Network (2010)
Great biopic
Great film detailing the rise of facebook, some excellent acting and an superb display of how much of a dick Zuckerberg is. An awesome insight into the cutthroat and competitive nature of both ivy league universities and entrepreneurship.
RRR (Rise Roar Revolt) (2022)
Very funny if this is your first indian movie
A great film if it's your first indian film. Don't come into it with any expectations or preparation, I until this point had never seen an indian film and though I knew they were largely musical based, I had heard that this might be different. The characters were confusing, the special effects unbelievable, and the plot both ridiculous and entertaining. I loved the portrayal of the English as the villains, which of course was period accurate, and several scenes of racial tension that were immediately diffused by a dance number left a very entertaining and comedic watch.
Don't take it too seriously.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Excellent action movie, see it in cinemas
A great, simple action movie reminiscent of its 80's predecessor, I haven't seen the original top gun and you definitely don't need to for this. It's just a fun adventure following tom cruise's return to teaching pilots and flying jets. Excellent cinematography and dogfight and combat scenes. Miles Teller plays a great role and highlights how short Tom Cruise actually is, this film is however much better in cinemas, with a big picture and surround sound to get yourself immersed in the experience, I imagine the enjoyment would deteriorate quickly if brought onto a regular tv.
Joker (2019)
Grim, disturbing and dark film
A great film, remind me almost of fight club as we watch Arthurs life crumble around him in all facets. Already being down on his luck, we watch him being beaten, ignored, betrayed and rejected by the society that he just wants to please. Filled with dark, disturbing and shocking moments that will always have you thinking that it surely can't get any worse for him, aswell as displaying his severe mental breakdown and collapse of his psyche.
A heavy and unhappy film, worth the watch.
Heat (1995)
Would've given it 7.5 if I could
Quite a good crime film following roberry crew leader De Niro and leader detective Pacino in their dance around a few heists.
Initially I was concerned that the film might be a little slow and complex as the first half is set over many days and introduced many seemingly inane tangents of the plot, however the second half of the film is set over a period of several hours, remind me somewhat of Die Hard, with great action scenes and events that tie all those plotlines together into a cohesive, emotional and quite suspenseful action packed ending.
Worth the watch.
Superbad (2007)
Overrated
A pretty average teen, American comedy. I can respect that it kinda initiated the dumb, adult comedy era that included Ted, let's be cops, 21 jump Street among others, and maybe I would've enjoyed it better at a younger age but honestly not as good as the hype around it.
Casino (1995)
Great watch
An excellent but long film about the corrupt casino industry and the mob. Be prepared for a longer film but it does an excellent job of carrying the story as it presents De Niro's character as the initial corrupt casino manager, who then changes through the film as his drug addict wife tears his personal and financial life apart, leaving him just wanting to support his daughter. Also it has Joe Pesci playing the same character he plays in every movie, not complaining though, good film.
The King of Staten Island (2020)
Dark but feelgood movie
A good film with darker heavy notes, depicting Scott's insecurities and issues a sort of late stage coming of age film of an immature man dealing with trauma from his childhood.
Taxi Driver (1976)
Decent movie, not entertaining
I came into this movie prepared for any experience so I wasn't too disappointed by what I received, however simply put, this movie is not that entertaining. I understand that it's early work of both Robert de Niro and Scorsese but there are many long, artsy scenes of de Niro driving his taxi to slow jazz. The film is for the most part directionless, which I don't mind however it is vastly unclear where we are headed, not in a cliffhanger way with intensity and suspense around the characters psyche, it is clear that Robert de Niro is being driven to madness, the film just fails to hold the viewer's attention to witness that madness, as we are titilated ruthlessly to the point where you fail to care about the events as you can't form a connection with the characters or plot.
Still an ok watch, but be prepared for extended periods of pointless artistic license.
