Drifter (2023)
just entertainment
Saw the film at the Melbourne Queer Film festival, and found it entertaining.
There is no message or in depth theme to this film, just fun as you get to watch the main character explore the Berlin queer world.
The first half of the film has a lot of humor and many in the cinema laughed loudly, but this drops off over the journey as the experience of our main character in the world his exploring become stronger.
There is a very good looking cast, adding a visual entertainment to the story and it makes a snap shot of what i from Australia can only assume is the pre-covid Berlin queer world.
If it is at a queer film festival near you, add it to your ticket list.
In from the Side (2022)
Enjoyed the Queers with Bears with a twisting love story
I missed this film at the local queer film festivals so was glad to see it as an in flight choice on QANTAS. I liked that while set at a Sports club where it appeared all the players were gay males, that wasn't the focus of the story as such the team mates aren't characters as developed as some might like.
The story was interesting, two men cheating on their partners, at one point you think its going to have a happy ever after ending but instead you see the real life mess that occurs when you agree to a style of relationship but don't live up to the promise.
Fantastic cinematography and lots of different UK trains pictured as well as men in mud!
I was thinking this was going to be a light hearted hallmark style romance but it finds a different space looking at impacted of not being able to give your relationships everything you promised.
Queer as Folk (2022)
didnt really engage with this compared to the orgionals
I loved the UK Queer as folk, followed by the USA with its adjustments to local culture and age of consents.
So, when I hear there was a 2022 version I was wondering, what would those types of stories look like in a world of apps, social media, legal gay marriage and much more visibility and awareness of the LGBTQIA+ community.
I guess my feelings now are they should have just called this club Babylon and made a whole new show, with a quick tribute to QAF. There is a lot of good stuff here, but also a lot that maybe didn't translate to me as a viewer in Australia as much as the original works did.
