The Devil's Arithmetic (1999)
Great Movie to Introduce Tweens to The Holocaust
Hannah is an American teenager who doesn't have any interest in the Jewish faith, and the customs of her family. So, when she is transported back in time to 1941, she lives the horrors of The Holocaust while meeting and sharing an unbreakable bond with another girl, Rivkah, and gains a much better understanding of what life was like back then.
This is an amazing first movie for older tweens and young teens to watch to put a perspective of World War Two and The Holocaust. It does have some violence- forced tattoos on women whose arms are then covered in blood, men being hanged and seeing their bodies hang lifeless, and women being put into a gas chamber. But given the seriousness of the subject, and all the extremely violent movies about it, this is not overly violent. It's a great opportunity for teens to really see themselves in Hannah, and how not to get to apathetic about something that is of great historical significance. It also teaches some Jewish customs, which would be interesting for a class to discuss. Fantastic movie.
Liebes Kind (2023)
Absolutely fantastic
This is probably my favorite psychological thriller/horror/mystery of all time. The movie fascinatingly shows the story of a woman who was hit by a car, but whose story starts to unfold into something more sinister as they speak with her daughter in the ambulance with her.
This is a straight mystery, no love triangles mixed in, which I appreciated. You feel like you're one of the detectives by the fragmented way the story is told, which made it both frustrating and amazing. I'd definitely recommend for any adult who enjoys these types of movies, very graphic scenes, beware! It reminds me of a R rated version of Room, if Room was a PG.
