The Kids Grow Up (2009)
A bit uncomfortable but good
There is something about this filmmakers lens that makes me Uncomfortable - in the way he puts his family under the microscope and is dealing with his own inability to let go. I am watching lots of personal documentaries right now and this one just felt a bit cringy. It's well done but I wonder what impact the filmmaking has had on the family. I would be very interested in seeing the family make a film about that, years later how did it impact them?.
It didn't have as strong of universal appeal as a number of other films I am watching along similar themes - but regardless this is a very well done film and emotional and much more entertaining than one might expect - if you can get past the slightly uncomfortable vibes.
Stories We Tell (2012)
Amazing film so well crafted
This film delivers on many accounts and I don't want to offer any spoilers other than to say it has greater and greater relevance the more documentaries merge with fiction and vice versa. Kudos to Sarah Polly for making a personal film that opens up questions about family & filmmaking - I was really blown away by the depth of this documentary. It raised many questions for me about my own family and amazing discussions around the dinner table after :) it is a gorgeous film and a documentary we should revive during these days where we are so propelled by narratives the ones we personally tell and the ones created by politicians that get in the way of reality - this film asks questions about family but it extends even more into truth itself. What is truth. Bravo. Bravo bravo.
Les plages d'Agnès (2008)
Greatest personal Doc of all time
I am Making my way through personal documentaries and this is by far my favorite. It is so cinematic and unexpected and special. It took to me through my
Own life and back again in a way that was very meaningful. In the revisiting of memories and locations I also was revisiting my own- a great example of how something so specific can make a work of art that is so universal. Anyone making a personal film should watch this as it was a beautiful beautiful watch and the kind of movie you could watch 1,000 times and always see something new. A master of the documentary art form indeed! Indelible !!
Love & Stuff (2020)
A Beautiful and meaningful Documentary
This is a surprisingly meaningful and artful personal documentary. The way it was put together is outstanding. It is unique because it feels like life. Taking you from the painful things to the joyous things and back again. All the stuff we leave behind and that live on past us. I have never seen that captured in quite this way. It made me think about a lot of things and made me want to call my mother!
I laughed and cried many times. Sometimes both at the same time!
The film goes by fast but it is a very enjoyable warm loving watch. Thank you to the filmmakers for helping me think about my own losses and stuff and all the love Along the way.
